All,
I may very soon have the need to transport an unroadworthy car about 200 miles in the UK. Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this cheaply and safely? The car isn't worth more than £200 as it stands.. I need to get it to a safe resting place where I can work on it, however that resting place is 200 miles away...
I don't have a towbar..
cheers, Mike

if it starts and drives and you can get insurance cover,
book it in for an MOT in the area of the destination then drive it back under the pretense you are on route to a pre/booked MOT,
preferably with an MOT test station you know,
just stretching the rule a tiny bit

You could always claim it was the only one that had a booking slot at the time you wanted it...

Re: Transporting an unroadworthy car.
There's no rule that states that the MOT Station has to be within X Miles from where you live Paul, so technically yes...citroenxm wrote:Does this REALLY work!!??? And can you REALLY go 200 miles to an MOT station, wont PLOD argue that theres an MOT place much much closer?????
However I think you'd better make sure that if you was going to drive it some distance "en-route to an MOT Station far far away", make sure it's as legal as possible - no bald tires etc as you'll get nicked for that - you can bet you'll get a pull from PC Plod as it'll flag up on ANPR...

Re: Transporting an unroadworthy car.
Thanks for the replies all. The car in question was actually a VW Golf GTi MK2, fitted with a 2 litre block and other odds and ends that makes it extremely rare and really good, not to mention the G60 xxx number plate that might be worth a bit to a G60 owner. It was a great drive 4 years ago when it was last on the road. Sadly it's been left standing to rot when it's owner bought an Activa. He wants shut, it'll go for scrap value, as it needs a fair amount of welding, including the bulkhead. The paintwork is now tired, and it doesn't run due to either an aftermarket immobiliser fault or fuel pump fault. I was thinking of saving it as I could have had it for nowt and I can weld a bit, but I decided against it in the end. It would make a really nice project for someone interested, as it's in very good nick inside, and goes like stink when it does go. Looks outwardly standard too, even wears Mk2 steelies. Oh well..

Bear in mind Mike, a car HAS to be legal for a plate transfer of any type, thats MOT tax and insurance... So in reality, the plate is stuck on the car due to the amount of welding needed..

Re: Transporting an unroadworthy car.
Yeah, I know. I was actually thinking of saving the car and keeping it! I drove it back when it worked, and it was a great car to drive. I thought it would make a handy project, but with various health issues (similar, but not as bad to Jim's) I'm not sure it's a wise idea. I'd probably end up selling it in pieces when I got frustrated with it. I can actually weld - though not as well as my brother and his friend, who welded up my Saab so well that an MOT tester who has a reputation for being particularly harsh, had to be shown where he'd failed it - so, welding not an issue. The moving of it, and the moving of my a**e 200 miles every few weekends to work on it was..citroenxm wrote:Bear in mind Mike, a car HAS to be legal for a plate transfer of any type, thats MOT tax and insurance...
