I always find it simpler to tax the car online. Quick and painless.

I have done once or twice but there's something about dedicating a trip to the Post Office to pick up a tax disk that I like.

I used to tax my car at the village post office when we still had one. It was always an elaborate procedure where you had to queue at the sweet counter next to a stack of bags of kindling while waiting to be summoned into the inner sanctum, a tiny back room where a little old lady sat behind a single counter window. She would peer through jam-jar bottom glasses at the various documents until she was satisfied you weren't a fraudster and finally issue a tax disc if you asked her nicely. The whole process seemed slightly 'Dads Army' and used to make me smile whenever I went in.

Unfortunately Royal Mail decided it was all too inefficient and closed her PO down in 2009, at which point I thought 'sod the post office', renewed my tax online, and now never set foot in a PO branch from one year to the next.

Before it became available online I always used to post the documents and cheque off to the local DVLA office. Life is too short to queue in a post office for two hours while half the folks in front get rejected for having incorrect or invalid documents and stand and argue the toss interminably.

I've heard a story recently about someone trying to tax a car using a photocopy of a new style MoT certificate (they had a genuine reason) and it was rejected! #-o

I have met you. You seemed like a nice guy, not a weirdo with masochistic tendencies!

It just seems so painful taxing a car at the post office. I know it's nice to hand over money and get a nice tax disc, still in it's square punchy-hole thing, but it's too much like hard work for me having to queue up for aeons behind ebayer sellers who have 10 packages to send special delivery, and someone who wants to pay a bill with 2p coins yet can't count..
