Just realised I posted in the wrong forum, apologies.

To anyone who replies I'd appreciate knowing the reasoning behind the opinion, thanks.

More durable, make sure its a 206 before around 2001 - so its not a multiplexed example, and you will be onto a winner. We had a 2004 2.0HDi 206 for a few years and it proved one of the most reliable cars we have had, I think I fitted a pair of tyres and a set of brake pads. It still had its original rear tyres at 90K miles!

Xsaras are bigger and again find one before the plexing came in and it should be a pretty hardy thing.

Xsara for me. The 206 is very very 'hit and miss' car in my mind - in that some are reliable and give no problems, whilst others are completely and utterly unreliable troublesome sheds. My misses one was 'ok' at best - 'ok' in that it never actually broke down, however it did require a lot of work over the 4 years of ownership. One massive £800 bill early on as the valves burnt out and needed new head gasket so it got the full works done to it hoping it would be plain sailing from then onwards, however it wasn't. Over the last 2 years it's needed a new injector (swapped over all injectors but it was one at fault), coil packs, gear linkage, and then a few months ago new drive shafts.
She now has a Rover 25 1.4 and so far so good. Much nicer car to drive than the 206 for sure.

Infact, when I said earlier on in my post 'some are reliable and give no problems' to be quite frank perhaps I was being too kind, as thinking about it every single person I have known with a 206 has had a multitude of problems. That's not being harsh, just being completely honest. An example is a close friend who actually scrapped their 206 because they was so fed up with it, and bought an OLDER 306 - which has been trouble free.

1.1 8v petrol in the OH's old one, and it was a 1.9 diesel in the friends one that got scrapped.

I thought the 1.1s were quite reliable little units. I guess you always get a few which dont like to be reliable.

I had an R-reg 1.9TD Xsara. Nice car, quiet, comfortable, reasonably economical. I did have the chance to pick up an HDi one earlier this year, it was nice enough to drive, but I don't like the newer, bug eyed shape. In fact, no non-hydropneumatic Citroen has ever really floated my boat apart from the 2CV! They're just Peugeots in disguise, and I have an irrational hatred of Peugeots.

Hmmm my experiance of the small petrol engined Peugeot 206's etc. is that the engine itself is fairly solid mechanically, but not everything else connected to it - like the injectors, coils, electrics, and indeed it seems in some cases.....the car
