Post by citronut »

do any of you clever IT types know how if possible to link a CCTV system to a PC/Network,

the system in question is a Sentient N16HJ

also does anyone have a ready reckoner for compressed to un/compressed file sizing ( Enhanced MJPEG )

I've just found a manual for it and there doesn't seem to be a way of connecting to to a network. It does say that there is a USB port for backing up footage in that MJPEG format. Have you got the manual? If not, it's here.

I'm a bit lost on that last bit, do you mean you're after something to play MJPEG files on? VLC plays a good range of files, looking here it seems like it support MJPEG.

ok thanks Kev we do have a copy of that manual,

partly what im asking is if its possible to conect to a PC/Network via the USB port

apparently the device stores data in the a compressed format,

we were trying to copy to a USB memory stick but it seems to try and un/compress the file as it copies them onto a memory stick,

ideally we would prefer to link it via our home Network,

we have a DVD recorder so the next attempt will be acquire a patch lead from either phono to BNC, scart to BNC or phono to BNC,

this way we should be able to copy straight to DVD,

Ah I see, as far as I know it's not possible to do USB networking without having a special lead and software on each side. It's a shame the CCTV system doesn't act like a digital camera really!

What leads you to think it's trying to uncompress the files? If it's anything like our CCTV setup at work it takes forever to copy the bits and pieces off.

when we have tried to copy to either a memory stick or external hard drive it says not enough space to copy files across,

we have now emptied our 500gb external drive and are going to try that,
