Got round to updating mine last night. After it an initial problem with the video driver (which involved a trip back to windoze to search the net, god it's slow to get out of bed!), seems to be working OK now. Faster than previous I think, but on the surface not that much different - will see as we get into it!

There’s a lot of little changes Richard, ones you only notice when going a bit deep...

There's also been a good few updates since PP was released. They have improved a few tiny early stability problems and also updates FireFox to V13 which, to my mind is a questionable benefit..

But generally, it is a very happy and content little penguin...

Have been trying since last year to get the Ocelot to work with a dial-up modem.
When I’m lucky, it says ‘hide banner’.
Most other times, there’s a Bushman growling at me.
I’ve given up for now, and continue with my free old windows.

Dial-up modem? I really didn't think anyone still used (or even could still use) them.... :o

I've not used one for over ten years now...

What are you trying to do with it Clogzz? Growling Bushmen and shy banners are a bit lost on me sadly...

Is it a built in (PCI card) modem?
I found these worked well with SüSE but USB modems seem to work better with Debian/Ubuntu.
You might also have a shot with Linux Mint.

Power management is much improved so the battery lasts much longer, and the updated NVidia driver means it will suspend without crashing when it wakes up again :)

We still have swing rope internet here, with dial-up speeds of 2.2 kB/sec.

The modem is PCI and when trying to get Ubuntu to find it, it says “hide banner’.
When running ‘wvdial’, there are croaking sounds from the speakers and words like ‘sudo’ on the screen.

I did look for Linux Mint initially, but couldn’t find any, even on Ebay.
Somehow, by now Ebay has both Mint and SüSE.

As you are on dial-up it isn't really a candidate for download but could you get a friend or relative with broadband to download it and burn a disk or load a dongle for you?
would offer but my Linux machine is borked and the Windaz laptop can't cope with burning iso CDs.
There are several companies that sell at practically cost price most Linux distributions, I have bought some from a Dutch company in the past but can't remember their name but there must be an Australian equivalent.
A post in the Linux forums, or even the Mint forum might net a result.

I know from a couple of Oz & Kiwi forums that a lot of both countries are still dial-up.

Thanks Steve. :)

The Ubuntu forum says that dial-up is just about impossible.
I bought the Ocelot last year for $5, including post and pack:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UBUNTU-11-10 ... 564abc36cb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There’s now a company selling Mint and SÜSE and other versions:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CHOOSE-LINUX ... 416696fb89" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can get a friend with unlimited broadband to download both onto a USB stick.
Later this year, I will move back to a house in Sydney that already has broadband, so that’ll be the end of dial-up. :twisted:

The latest version of Firefox has stolen from Google Chrome by using their "most frequently used" homepage idea. I like it, i just couldn't get on with Chrome so some reason.

Chrome nicked that idea from Opera anyway :)

Installed Precise Pangolin on my laptop today after six years of procrastination
Had to install Oneiric first as no disc, then upgrade.
All went without the slightest hitch, evrything works very well, printer installed itself in the background and although I have been using Linux for years and Ubuntu from it's second revision, I am impressed.
So much faster and smoother than Windows, which was really getting on my nerves. Just burning all the documents and photo's to disc last night took hours and was such a pain compared with K3b.
