CB Radios

Post by Xaccers »

Is there much of a CB community these days?
Danielle used to be into it in her teens, and a mate of mine at school was too.
Recently Danielle's been getting the urge to be back on the airwaves.
Ok, we watched Smokey and the Bandit 1&2, with me forgetting how impressionable she can be...

Dad was well into his CB radio too, still got all his gear. I've got some of his old books, very interesting reading about the codewords!

I did look into it a bit backalong, no license fees to pay anymore :D
Around here at least, there are a good few old school looking amature radio ariels in peoples gardens and attached to houses. I know a few local farms still use CB radio regularly too.

Maybe Xacs wedding car fleet should all be outfitted with CB gear?

I don't think Danielle would give that much of a 10-4 :D

I'm looking at this one, £59.49 on ebay or £79.99 from maplins

I'm wondering if it'd fit in place of the ash tray.
Hmm, ICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCR convoy? :D

In my taxi driving days the radio was usually mounted sideways on the side of the console, or occasionally bolted under the dash to the right of the steering column.

Well, I've successfully bid on a 2nd hand one for £24 and an antenna with mag mount and coax for £14 just to see what the CB community is like in this area.
If it turns out to be decent, then I'll get the 550 and resell the 2nd hand one.
Although looking up the specs of the one I'm getting (Team ME-4) I may keep it.
We're thinking of it coming in handy, especially in emergencies when mobiles can't get a signal, during holidays on the continent.

I've got a Harvard 420 CB Radio in my Visa Special that also has a PA Function.

In all honesty I only got it for the PA System which isn't bad, as National Rally attendees would have heard...

Could do with being a bit louder though...

Nice big magnetic aerial on the roof too:

Worked out about £40 for the CB Radio, Aerial and PA Speaker.

Right, got the radio, nice whippy antenna, and a magnetic mount.
Seems most of the conversations are PC support from what I've heard so far :D

The TEAM M-E4 radio I have is missing its squelch knob (sounded painful until I remembered what squelch is for from my PMR446 use)
It looks just like the volume knob:

Image

The widest part of the knob is 14mm
Shaft is 9mm long, 8mm wide and the spline it fits is 5mm across.
Any ideas where I can find one?

When I closed down the grocery shop side of my business I rented out the site to a couple of guys who sold CB radios (they were still illegal at the time)

That shop made them more money in a few months than it had made in the last sixteen years as a grocery shop.

Once the government relented and made it legal and licenced the trade died immediately and they shut up shop and went away with their pockets stuffed with cash to think up a new scheme. :)
