As for the yanks allowing spy type electronics in their beloved land of the free, I very much doubt it. You can here the wailing from the left and the right already!

I'm sure the Americans have the technology but how widespread it is I couldn't say - an embedded chip with a GPS transponder and immobiliser.

In the event of an accident or breakdown the car flags it's fault and location but also a stolen car can located be remotely disabled.

Oddly enough, in today's The Register it looks as though a meltdown is on the horizon.

The footage we end up seeing on Traffic Cops, Motorway Cops, Police Interceptors etc, and all the others, uses a lot of footage shot by the police themselves which they sell on to the TV companies, and when they allow the film crews to film, and follow them, again the forces shown on the programmes earn money from allowing them to be there, in the cars at the scene of the action.

So, they do earn quite a lot of money from doing this!
