Xantia V6 Auto - Information request

Post by vince »

Guys....After being at the CXM rally i want to find out more about the Xantia series 2 V6 auto.

What insurance group are they in? also what group is the Mk1 TD in by comparison?
What MPG do you get out of them urban and extra urban?
What are they like on LPG? ie running cost equivalent on say a 30 mile round trip journey?
How can you avoid one with gearbox problems?
How can you avoid the gearbox going duff?
Do they have any Immobiliser problems like im sure ive read the exclusives can get where the car ends up dead.

Ive got a real hankering after a big engine car again... economy is still important but i figured on gas id bet there isnt much difference when you price it against diesel anymore.

1. Pass

2. Around 27 mpg in town, up to 35 mpg on a run...

3. Much the same. Give me a year and I'll tell you when my XM is on her wheels again but generally LPG is not as economical as petrol but is much cheaper. I reckon about a 30% saving overall as a guess. It can only be used with a hot engine so short commutes don't suit gas at all.

4. Get a low mileage one with a record of fluid changes or get one that's had a gearbox overhaul. Generally ones that have spent their life on motorways last better than ones that have pottered around town all their lives constantly changing gear...

6. You can't. Regular fluid changes will delay the inevitable. Eventually the lock-up clutch will go and then it's goodnight Vienna. It can happen anywhere between 140 and 170 thou... There is no guarding against this failure but long motorway hauls are kinder.

7. Potentially. It's the same system as in any MK2 Xantia.

Don't worry about the 'box. get a low mileage one and enjoy...

Seen as the V6 came late in S1 run, in 1997, then most will be S2..

Im un decided what to do with my S1 P reg V6... Part of me says sell on, but I wont because the RUST ( ) is quite bad around the body, which for the claimed low miles is unusueal..

Theres the rust on the useual tops of the rear cills - both sides.
Rust on the nearside rear arch "Middle" area - useually on sunroof cars.
Rust around a lot of the welded joined seams in the engine bay
Rust along the lip of the rear drivers wheel arch.

Were as my L reg 1994 TD SX with 244k on it is rust LESS....in all these places.

Oh, and

1. Insurance group 16 I think for the V6, and the TD is group 8.
