PRV 24V vs ES9J4 - Which is better?

Post by addo »

Assuming both are with a manual trans, and in a heavy car like the XM...

My experience extends to only hearing the two engines. The PRV engine note sounds better :)

Better in what way Adam?

If it's the sound of them then the PRV wins hands down :D

I've driven a manual PRV but never a manual PR ES9. For me the PRV was a very grunty engine full of oodles of torque and it felt more powerful than the ES9. Mind you it was a 24V PRV...

CitroenXM will be about heres soon. It's a favorite topic of his

I assume here you are referring to Harry Hill?

In which case FIGHT!!!

If not, look back tomorrow morning, just make sure you wake up half and hour early if you want to get through the topic before going to...oh wait you're on study leave  In that case, grab a cup of coco and a pack of hob nobs and watch the discussion live!

Remind me next time I see you Jim (and when the Coupé is finally back on the road....) to hand you the keys to it. It's an ES9J4S so not exactly the same as the Xantia V6. You can compare to the Xantia too and see if you can detect the extra 16bhp. I suspect your love of auto transmissions will be cemented, as well as your appreciation for hydropneumatic suspension

I've never even seen one of these fabled PRVs. They are a mythical creature to me ;) As much as I love the ES9, I do wish it sounded a bit better, the S is very strangled with 4 cats (not of the feline type!)

Now the Busso V6 on the other hand......

That'll be great Toby :D :D :D I'm looking forward to that...

I'm sure you'll see and hear a PRV at the National.... They are a bit stunning...

I'm still not sure if they are as musical as an Alfa V6 but not far off...

The ES9J4 - not really. It only has one cat and it is lambda monitored. Also, the cat needs to be there for MOT reasons.

The ES9J4S (later 406 V6s and C5s) have 4 cats! One pre cat on each bank which are lambda monitored and two big cans containing cats further downstream. These are not lambda monitored so can be removed and for MOT purposes you still have the pre-cats.

I could try recording my PRV with the phone! It's not a thread to wind up Paul, either.

My quest has a more serious underpinning; PRVs have issues (here, at least) and I sometimes wonder if working towards an ES9J4(s?) conversion of the 605 simply as a backup plan, might be a good move.

Since they sold XMs with both powertrains and there are a few other ES9J4 powered cars like Euro spec Activas and the 406 Coupés, I reckon there is a chance of fair commentary.

One thing about the ES9 is that it's proving to be a generally reliable, long-lived engine that does not seem to be troublesome to any degree.

As for transplanting one into a 605, I don't know but then you could have a nice 4HP20 gearbox in it then Adam!!!

As a complete prv novice i take it you mean they are a pita to source parts for rather than suffer mechanical failure frequently?
