has anybody done it??
i am looking at replacing my synergie with one but on the eurovan2 website it appears it's not supposed to be done as it mucks up the ecu and stops the car from starting, is it true??? or does it only apply to cars with sat-nav???

Complete nonsense, if an aftermaket radio is fitted correctly it wont cause any problems although you will loose your radio display on the multifunction screen & the remote controls at the steering wheel without an additional adaptor.
You are right enough though that you would probably run into some problems on models with built in satnav but not to the extent that it would stop the car starting.
