A little game just because i was bored of watching christmas with the cranks.....again whilst visiting family this evening i thought it would be worth a shot to see how much the XM was worth at this well known site, i said it had a full MOT, 1 previous owner, sat nav, DVD, leccy windows, sunroof, mirrors, leather, full service history, auto box, and top marks for interior and exterior condition, now bearing in mind they have to sell it and make some money what do you think they valued it at???????

£50.

Then if you accepted, once they got there that offer would end up being £10.

That's the harsh reality of "Bangernomics" and why so many old Citroens get scrapped whereas other cars such as BMW's are kept going for so much longer, not necessarily due to greater longevity but if your car is only worth £50 you have to be an enthusiast to spend money keeping it going, by comparison the DVD player for the Satnav in my BMW sells for upwards of £300 not to mention the flip screen etc. Its a strange world :?

That it is, we all know its a labour of love unless you have a really nice late HDI obviously but i find it hard to understand how such little value older cars have, when you think of their value in parts compared to that of a whole useable car its strange, i wonder how many cars have been handed over to company's like this for half the scrap price :?

Their prices do not compare to what it is really worth to you, and a correct valuation should be sought from a fellow enthusiast, or a company that's not out to scam people, to pay for their expensive adverts by offering nothing for what they buy, and then selling at much higher prices!

Its because the sheep MUST have the latest/newest/"best"/what the neighbours have/etc. Our cars being French doesn't help either as "It's French, so its crap". Despite my French cars being more reliable than anything I've ever had, Japanese included (although that was quite an old Micra )

The planned obsolescence built into cars these days don't help. By that I don't just mean the newer cars but the way the manufacturers hike the prices of parts for older cars in an attempt to get people to buy new.

You should see the price of Coupés. Not much more than Xantias.

Still, I agree with Richard. Bangernomics is just that way and if your car is worth £50 then yes, as you say, you have to be an enthusiast to spend that - however wescamdesperatebuyers.com isn't Bangernomics in my eyes. Its just taking the mick. A tidy, working, taxed and tested XM is worth at least £150 to a buyer who wants to sell it straight on surely?

They offered £400 for my Coupé when I got bored and stuck the details into the site. As as mentioned, once they got there to collect, that offer would miraculously decline.

Well even new car's are so much cheaper now than they've ever been, back in 1983 I bought a new XR3i  with all the toys of the time for £6084 OTR, now work out an average salary for then compared the present time and new cars are so much cheaper now especially when you consider the equipment present day cars have, ABS and power steering weren't even an option on my XR3i.

The most embarrassing thing about buying that XR3i was that it replaced an Alfasud Ti, I never forget the feeling of WTF  when I came to the end of running in the XR3i and started to use the full rev range, oh and the lack of suspension  mistakes, I've made a few

I do believe a lot of it is misplaced snobbery.

The "must have a newer car" attitude is worse here, because cars don't significantly rust. As a result, they get crushed as unrusted shells with unoxidised wiring and maybe 250K on the clock (kilometres).

That - to me - is despicable greed triumphing over good sense.

Now there's a car !! The Alfasud Ti, was it the Green Cloverleaf by any chance ? I had one of those and it's one of the most memorable cars I've ever owned. Bought it new, a black one and the only thing it lacked is outright speed but despite that on a curvy road it would leave almost anything in it's wake ! The handling was just fantastic. Which is alot more than I can say for it's replacement, a Vauxhall Astra GTE, the futuristic shaped one. Now there was a sh1t car, so bad that I have never and never will own another Vauxhall ! I was living in Yorkshire at the time and on a road that was flat in top in the Sud no problem the Astra almost killed me !
Such a pity that Sud's are now almost extinct due to a terminal affinity for corrosion. I'd love to have another.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

How many do you want?

They get the A-pillar rust here, but still a good number kicking about. Mate has two plus always parting out other Suds/33s/164s.

Front wheel handbrake, too, IIRC.

The dreaded A pillar rust !! Due to Alfa filling them with foam which absorbed water with inevitable consequences !
If there is a Black, Ti 105, green clover leaf kicking around, without corrosion, I would probably have a serious look at importing it !
