I expect it is one of those phase compensator jobbies that supposedly corrects for inductive loads and have never been demonstrated to do a ha'porth of good other than increasing the wealth of the manufacturer.
They've been around for donkeys and were supposed to reduce the running costs of fridges but amounted pretty much to electronic snake oil.

Actually I thought it was a smart socket that when a primary device, such as a TV, was turned off anything plugged in the secondary socket, such as a VCR or satellite receiver, would also be turned off.

You're absolutely right! And the Mods and Admins are the worst offenders!!

The power switch is controlled by one of your remote controls.
Perfect for my needs as Danielle's Xbox 360 has an extra fan pack which is bloody noisy and runs constantly as long as it's plugged in.
Running it off this socket will mean I can cut the power using the Xbox remote.

I miss the combi boiler we had at Thompson street, gave a lovely hot and powerful (once I opened up the stop cock fully so flushing the toilet or running the washing machine wouldn't cause the shower to just dribble), the only thing the heating system was missing was a thermostat!
The shower was a mixer but the temperature dial was seperate to the power, so there was no shocking moments.

We've got a brand new electric shower in the new place, it's nice but not as powerful as the mixer was.
It took us 2 months to work out where the boiler was to then turn it on (it's a back boiler, part of the gas fire in the lounge) as with the dishwasher and electric shower we didn't need hot water.

Good showers but pump bearings don't last long. ( in my experience ). I do believe that their warranty is 5 years though.
