yep .. seems to a be a mixed page of diaphram probs and timing control probs.. I removed the only turbo-pump pipe, there was pressure from it as I accelerated the engine, but no oil or vapour, and the smoke didn't stop..

i get the feeling I need to go back there and start stripping the pump, but really i need to spend the next visit prepared to remove the head at least.. quandary...

My father had exactly the same problem as you - the smoke etc was exactly the same.

All the local diesel specialists said advance solenoid - all quoting different figures to do the job.

He took the mondeo to the local citroen specialist - the timing was out! £140 later and no smoke!

It took a cit mechanic to diagnose the fault! Incidentally, his car is on a T plate and it is still running sweet.

I earlier stated "Blue smoke is engine oil AFAIC"

If Mr Bosch says diesel can cause blue smoke, I'll have to retract my above statement so I apologise if I've mislead you, John.

Mike I do agree with you :D but... that modeo forum posting about blue smoke and timing did hit a nerve..

to be honest, with the car nowhere near home and the owner wanting a quick fix, I was running out of time to keep trying things.. I will get the pump off as well as the head tomorrow, and at least then I can spend time working on it at home...

Nowt to do with the Mondeo, but Ford never made a diesel Cortina....

It was the Sierra which had the Peugeot 2.3 fitted, 1986 I think, sold to Ford just after the new Peugeot 2.5 was introduced.

well I continued taking the head off last night.. all in all about 6 hours and a fair bit harder than an XUD.. cooland had drained into the suspect cylinder, probably because the engine was tilted to one side.. but it wasn't sinking, making me think the rings are ok.. I cleaned all bores and left them with LHM to see if anything changes.. I had a quick look at valves and gasket and to be honest could not see anything wrong.. I removed the injection pump and brought that and head home.. will have a proper look over weekend with CitroJim  will post a pic or two at lunch..

I did not have the time to see if the belt timing was out :( but as the car was running pretty well and only occasionaly misfiring I think it was ok..

well after 8 visits around the lower east-side of the M25, the head is back on :) everything connected up and turning over ok.. it's not starting though...
I have fuel coming from the leak offs, and fuel at the injector pipes (when I crack them open there is a hiss of pressure) ... the only other thing, a slight knocking/ticking from the lucas, more noticeable as the battery runs down and the engine slows (could be fuel solenoid I guess, getting low voltage, but it doesn't sound quite like that.. louder)

otherwise it sounds fine when turning over, 4 distinct compressions can be heard.. I probably managed 50 turns but although it almost sounded close to starting, it never did..

any ideas guys? cam and injection pump timing looks spot on.. primed fuel lots.. i know it will take a while to get the air out, but I would have expected some sign of life by now..

Ah ha... I thought so, there was no DERV Cortina (In the UK) he Sierra introducted Ford to DERV with Pugs 2.3 engine from the 504/505 eira...

The Granada 2 always had DERV, the Cortina shape Mk.2 Granada had the even older 2.1 DERV from 504 eira... Peugeot moved on and sold their last generation technology to lesser manufactures.... PSA Always one step ahead. .. LOL..

chaps, can anyone with a D or TD Lucas car do me a favour?

look at the four injection pipes and confirm which pump outlet goes to which injector? I am assuming 1-3-4-2 and looking at the pump from behind, you have outlets NW SW SE NE .. on my Bosch xanti it seems that the arrangment is different to the Lucas Mondy - they are both 1342 but the lucas is a cylinder behind..

trying to work out if the piepwork is wrong, causing it not to fire up.. although hard to see how it will fit any other way..

Ah John..

Outlets are very different!!

BOSCH: Looking at the side or front of the engine... the REAR TWO outlets got injectors 3 and 4, and the two front outlets Top/Bottom) got 1 and 2

LUCAS: IIRC: BOTTOM Two got 1 and 2, top two got 3 and 4...

Both SYSTEMS fire 1 3 4 2 but outlets in a different order...

Was wondering what guys were on about. Fords first diesel car in uk,that Siera afaik. They had a horrible York diesel in Transit long before

.Apart from some old Austin Cambridge with the BMC diesel in it(dog) the first good useable diesel car here was the old Pug 404 or 504type? Revelation it was .

well the old thing runs! :D as of last weekend.. but now I need to do a cambelt change.. there is no BOL for this engine.. simple question, how do I tension the cambelt correctly.. ? (the dayco belt kit has no useful instructions) - tried an online mondeo TD 1.8 search but nothing yet..

there is an auto tensioner on the 'up' run of the belt and a manually adjustable idler with an eccentric movement on the down side..

the auto adjuster has 2 arrows, which at some point are supposed to align.. hoping to fit the new belt kit tomorrow but have never come across this probably common set up.. am I supposed to align the arrows manually and then adjust the other idler until I feel the belt is right, and then let go?

help
