V6 diagnostics

Post by jgra1 »

All, I know this has been done to death.. but can someone remind me and Tony (cachaciero) what cable and diag machine will read a V6 1999 406 coupe?

I have one with intermittent non starting.. a shut down of ignition or injection I imagine..

many thanks
John

You'll need the 16 pin plug I believe. DIAG2000 and Planet will read it. Probably a few others.

OBD readers will not read it however. The protocol is unique to PSA.

Diag socket will either be with the fusebox or behind the blanking cover next to the cruise control on/off button.

I say 16-pin. Being a 1997 yours may actually have the 30 pin. I think it was 30 pin in the fusebox and 16 pin behind the panel.

Sorry for any confusion.
Toby

I've used Lexia software loads of times on peugeots. You just need to know an approximate RP number as pug ones are different & just select the most equivalant model eg early 406=xantia1, newer 406=xantia2, 106=saxo, 306=xsara, 307=C3 etc. It's then just a case of identifying the right ECU. At the end of the day it's the same ECU, the model of car it's fitted to it irellivant. Can take a bit of experimenting but it does work. I dont know though how much lexia/diag will tell you about this type of problem. For this type of fault it would be well worth investing in a multimeter (if you dont already have one) & a noid light set. A couple of simple & quick checks with a noid light can rule out a whole load of things very quickly.

Toby, sorry it's not my coupe, it's a 99 one..

Wheeler many thanks, can I ask what a noid light is?
The car has the EM light flash twice on ignition (as mine does) so there may be something of interest with that.. Its one of those faults that happens every 5th time he tries to start the car.. hard to diagnose :(

>NOID LIGHT SET< It's a little test bulb that you plug in in place of the injector/coil & it flashes to show the injectors/coil are being pulsed on cranking. If the noid light is flashing when cranking it instantly tells you the crankshaft sensor is ok, the ECU is being powered up, the wiring to the injectors are ok & the imobiliser is unlocking. You then repeat the test on the coils. A very valuble tool for faults like this.
