You were lucky with the polo then.. Theres lots out there with duff gearbox's, I think they fail on 5th gear..

My other would without a doubt be a Mazda 626 (1992 to 1998), Jap reliability, and soft suspension setup like a Cit..

fair play, the japs do make good cars, and credit to the british here... the m reg micra 1.3 sx i had for a bit was a good one, built in britain i believe, but with japanese part i suspect (wouldn't have lasted otherwise)

as much as i like bmw's i had one d reg 325i coupe that had the most horrendous electrical problem, no one ever got round to working it out and was therefore scrapped, very sad, otherwise, they are 'nice' cars

what i liked about the bmw's is the rwd thing with the straight 6 thing, unbeatable, if only they had hydro pneumatic suspension and double wishbones, i did think of converting the hydractive system to an e30 at one point, but i gave up on the idea for now.

Any car can have probelms, its just older cars dont tend to have as many electrical gremlins.

Im a huge fan of cheap small cars, i think they are great, very uncomplicated, reliable and huge fun to drive with small engines. Ive had two Seat Arosas which ive loved, my first was a 20 month old 1.0S Arosa and my next was a 1.4TDi. Both have been great and we still have the 03reg 1.0S 5 years on. I still love driving it, you can drive it for all it has, thrash it around and it loves it, you do need to work it though as its only 50bhp but it actually goes very well. Great on fuel, drives like a go cart and its perfect for around town. Its one of those cars which never needs anything doing, its used all week, for short cold runs, nothing ever goes wrong, never uses any oil or water. I take it out for a longer drive every few weeks to get it properly warm and service it every 8 months. Its fantastic, looks great with its alloys, has a decent amount of kit for a small car and i think they are superb. Mind its quite refined, comfortable and spacious - in th efront. Im 6ft 2 and ive spent days in Arosas without ever getting uncomfortable. Some cheap small cars are better than others, i think Ford Kas are superb, they drive great so long as the engine is the later 70 version. I really wanted to like the C1/107 and Aygo cars, but after having a 107 loan car for a week i wanted to give it back, not a patch on the arosas. Felt like a toy rather than a car, just too cheap and noisey. Ive driven a couple of smart fortwos, id like one of those as a town car, they are excellent.

I do like landrovers, though only if there is a reason for them. My mum used to have a range rover V8, what a fantastic thing that was. It was faultless, excellent sound to it and brimming with kit. Though it did used to pull our horse box too. 10MPG it did around the town! We have had a Freelander TD4, which was good, though problematic, often failing to start when we needed it the most.

We have always run Citroens though, we might have had other things as well but always had a few Citroens. They have never given any serious problems or let us down.

Ive not often been left stranded in a broken down car, but two of the occasions were in rolls and bentley cars. The Rolls failed to start and the Bentleys gearbox went, it was a 1999 Turbo-R. We were waiting to cross a dual carrigeway, you have to cross the first 2 lanes of a 70mph road, then stop in the middle then cross the next two and be on your way. As we went to more cross into the centre, there was a huge bang and the car lept into the middle of the 4 lanes - at rush hour, and would not move any more, the gearbox had failed. Which was very costly for its owner, luckily not our car  Ive only once broken down in a Citroen, when the 6Hs bearing went, but its 54 years old so ill let it off

So i think ill stick with Citroens :D Or maybe Seats too

MG Maestro 2.0 EFI
Morris Maestro 1.3

Good choice, and one of ARG finest moments in the 80's, the Efi was better all rounder than the Golf GTi, top dog at the time. Unsure of a Morris Maestro though, that was never a variant

I would buy a Ford, but only a recent one. My daily driver is a Transit and apart from previous owner neglect, its been brilliant. Ive driven lots of modern Ford's the most impressive being the Focus RS but even the less performance orientated models are well built and good performers. 5 years ago you would not here me say that about a Ford, they have come a long way.

Ive got to say i do like the more recent ford a bit better, the new focus i do like. Though they have PSA engines in the diesels which i like too, though have just read your other post about them being worse . I cant quite get over the fact that you can pay over £16K for a top spec Fiesta diesel though, thats crazy

Do you work for Ford Gareth?

Might have been an Austin - I've slept since! I do remember it was pale blue with rusty brown holes but otherwise dull enough to be forgettable.

Would defo have been an Austin.

I had a 1.3 L Maestro as my first real car after a Mini. It was reliable and economical and much better than an Escort of the same age.

.

Don`t be silly

The reason for an old £500 classic? Why do you need a reason? It`s choice. That`s like going into a travel agent and asking someone for the reason they are booking a 3wk holiday in the Seychelles when they could go to Blackpool.

Does Alan Sugar have a reason for driving what he drives? I do 4k a year in Landy and my nepew does 15 k in his supermini...........same amount of fuel......and pollution. What`s his reason for doing 15k miles..who cares?.He pays his tax on the fuel which does a whole lotta good in the real world.

No i didnt mean classics, thats different. But modern ones, i dont really see the need in any 4x4 if the ower doesnt have a purpose for having a 4x4. Classic landrovers are different, you wouldnt always use them for a reason, just for enjoyment.

Ive done quite a few offroad driving days now, exellent fun. Always been in landrovers, Discoverys, 110s and 90s. Brilliant fun, now i can see why someone would want one to venture off road on the weekend but they are not really needed to get into tescos carpark or to bounce up the curb outside a school.

Can you imagine how many Range rover sports and the likes actualy go onto the muddy stuff? Hmm very few, they are just a fashion statement really.

So if you don`t use something for a certain purpose? Why have a 125mph V6 when you can only do 70mph ? Why have a Rolex when a Casio will do ?

People earn their money in the market place and should be able to spend on what they wish. The Govt believe in this.........they only pay lip service to the protest to gain more taxes...Anyway we are off topic

Because you can do 0-60 in a few seconds legally (and the V6 xantia is pretty economical for a petrol)

Safety and reliability :)
Also, people are less likely to think you're an asshat wearing a casio ;)
Hmm, that also applies to cars doesn't it? :D

My gripe with 4x4s is because of safety reasons mainly, i wouldnt like to think about having a head on crash with one, especially not in a softer older or smaller car, even modern cars like C5s with a strong crash rating would have problems against a huge 4x4 which takes a lot more energy to stop. It would be and is horendous. They are often driven by people who have no idea how large or small their 4x4 is and think they are as safe as houses, they take up so much room in carparks and you cant see past the things at junctions.

I didnt actually mention anything about costs did I?

What have i got myself into here, back on topic .........

I would never ever buy a toyota again after the mass amount of issues we had with the 2 rachel has owned as her car.

The swift sport on the other is still jap and has proved very reliable and very lively for such a low powered engine.

I might own a Land Rover 1 day. a nice 110 i think with an isuzu diesel engine in it for the veg oil and better power :)

Love the idea of fitting hydro pnuematic suspension to 1 as well would make it much better for on road and off road, maybe fit some activa bits as well lol :D

Very much pie in the sky but either a Bristol Blenheim 3 or a Fighter

The Bristol ethos is just incredible :)
