In My Xantia I am not entirely sure as I have never taken the time to calculate the fuel consumption. Perhaps I should

In my Vectra V6, which had an onboard computer which was pretty accurate actually, I managed to average around 7mpg on one 20 mile journey

We had a Mazda 626 a few years ago that hovered around the low teens. It was dangerously slow too, a seriously rubbish car. We replaced it with a povo spec Renault 19 Diesel Saloon, which was faster, used much less fuel, rode and handled better and was more spacious.

I'm stil at a loss to explain that one Xac  Never had it below 45 in my ownership :? But then, you know how I drive

An Activa can return some seriously low MPG if you enjoy it to the full  Against that though, there is some serious enjoyment to be had for the fuel penalty, unlike, I guess, your 626 Richard..

Activas can be surprisingly ecomonical if driven with restraint...

Worst car I ever had for fuel consumption was a Mk2 1500GT (pre-crossflow) Cortina. 21mpg at the very best

I enjoy these threads. Ever since I started forking ouit for fuel over 30 years ago now, economy has always been a top priority for me; years back out of fiscal necessity but now out of sheer curiosity to see how far I can go on a given amount of fuel and my general dislike of paying tax

I had a 2200 Princess for a while in the late 80s. If you floored it in third it would go to 80mph seemingly instantly. Too much of that sort of behaviour got the mpg into single figures. The mpds (miles per driveshaft) figure was similarly low.

My friends father used to claim he got 5mpg out of his Mk3 Zephyr. My friend got the other 20.

I know of (Don't actually know him) a bloke in Wolverhampton called Andy Frost. He has a 1971 Vauxhall Victor that has been heavily modified.

Calls it Red Victor 2 (after some more modifications)

It has a 9.3 litre V8 with two turbos, it's pushing out 2200bhp apparently and can do 0-60 in 1sec.

It's a fantastic car. I've seen it go down the strip at Santa Pod last year. It's also completely street legal and runs on pump fuel.

He reckons he gets 5mpg out of it when he is lucky

Goes like a bomb then John

Single figure economy is scary

Not quite on-topic but recently I've been filling the Activa with Shell V-Power so now she's running on 100% of the stuff and economy is markedly improved. Interestingly, only V-Power seems to bring this about; BP Ultimate or Tesco Finest 99 Octane stuff does not seem to give the same marked improvement. Strange :-k

In a previous life(!) back in the early 60s, I was running a family Funeral business that boasted a Roll-Royce fleet which included a Phantom III hearse (7.2 litre V12). It weighed in at 2.75 tons, and on trips down to the West Country from the home counties used to average 9MPG - she would clock 92MPH accross Salibury plain however.... happy days!
