"You want how much!!??"
The stereo in my digger is playing up.Can only recieve M.Wave now,no F.M.10 hrs of rubbish chat & crackle is doing my head in .Having some problems getting my c.d stereo in,24v to 12v & depth of unit etc so i rang the dealer to see if they could help me.The stereo is a fm/am tuner, digital display,6 presets & 1 billy big nob for the volume & tone. Its statndard din size, but half the depth.
Let me make this clear, theres no cassette player,c.d player, rds, bass, treble, balance or fader,it really is basic in this day & age, something like a 80`s jap car would have.(digger is a 2004).Bearing in mind how cheaply you can get a desent radio/cd player for,any one like to guess how much they want for a new radio???

Dont get me wrong, but i love my job .I have a large 35 ton Hitachi working in quarrys up & down the country breaking oversize rock with my 2 1/2t hammer,& a bit of digging. Its a good job,but there is a element of boredom sometimes, hence the need for some Radio 2.
Anyway,the dealer wanted £375 + vat for a radio!!
I think i`ll just buy a portable 1 for £20 at Argos & a supply of batterys.

If -- you drive your digger down to the dealers shop, and park it very very close to his shop window, I have a strong feeling that he may get very negotiable on price and offer you an astonishingly large discount!! heh heh..

It may well take about 10 hrs to track to the dealer .But i`d like to see how the police would try and stop me
I cant wear any head phones,so a walkman or i pod is a no no.Can hear radio fine over the noise.I dont even wear ear muffs cause its not that loud.
Having done some testing i`m going to take a 12v fused feed off the 12v terminal on 1 of the batterys, then earth stereo to machine.I`ve got a 24v-12v reducer, cig plug in type.I wired my 12v stereo up to that, but it needs earthing to the machine to stop sparking.Once i did that it stopped sparking, but went to 24v and burnt the radio out
But taking a 12v feed off the battery & earthing to the machine it stays at 12v(multy meter),so i`ll do that monday.I`ve done it a few times on my older machines.

if your keeping/using the machine for a longish period of time why not get a proper voltage dropper fitted like we have in our lorries.
pretty sure they wire into the fusebox off the main feed line and that way you know its not going to damage the digger or the radio and they are easy to remove/replace from vehicle to vehicle.
not sure on price but cheaper than blowing radio after radio
Colin

Hi Colin, thanks for that.Have looked into it but it was cheaper to buy the reducer i have. The digger is "mine" so say,but could be taken off it as & when.I would have to do a fair bit of stripping out to access the fuse box etc.I think i`ll just take a feed off battery & run it into the cab.Has worked before no probs on some older machines i`ve had.
Blowing radios is a pain but i have a supply of Blaukpunt(?)cd stereos from my Dad out of company vans.Have 1 left now

Sorry to hijack this thread but it fits nicely with the title and theme and maybe will give you the same laughs it gave my sister and I
I enquired about putting my just-turned-17-yr-old nephew on my insurance so he may practice driving, having ridden a moped for the last year. I know it will be horrendously expensive and cannot afford it but ...what are your guesses
At the very best, I expected an acceptable £1500 and worst, £2900. I was so wrong so there's your starter....

That is a huge amount of money!!! My 1st car was a Astra 1.3 in 1992,a Y reg `83.It cost £508 tpft which i thought was a lot.
Anyway,my stereo is all wired up now.Took a 12v fused feed from the 12v battery straight to the stereo, earthed via the machine,no probsat all. What a plesure it is to R2 & FM again.
Out of interest, its stil lmy Bluaplunk cd player that had 24v through it with smoke pouring out of it .Still works fine
