How about a Volvo or a Saab?

Volvo 850 / S70 / S60 T5 with up to 250bhp
Volvo S40 T4 with 200 bhp
Saab 900s with 185 bhp
Some of the Saab 9000s had 225bhp and don't shout about it.
Later models of the Lancia Thema 2.0. i.e 16v turbo had 215 bhp, there was even a model with a 3.0 litre Ferrari V8 out of the Dino, 215 bhp again.
How about an Alpha 164 3.0 V6 with the 24 valve engine and 210 bhp that sounds about as good as any V6.

There are a few, big cars with power but very subtle about how much power they have :)

If you're thinking about a CX GTi Turbo in either S1 or 2 guise or a Turbo2,
I personally feel the best balance of all the elements from looks, rarity and
sheer 'go' is exemplified by an example like this very auction car; a black
SERIES 1 TURBO.

There weren't many of these registered RHD new in the few months
from their official release in October of '84 (and they didn't really hit the
roads until the beginning months of '85). The s2 facelift then came
around the autumn of '85, and to find any now in good health will be
hard to say the least.

With the black car auction, I take the view that when an opportunity presents
itself like this, it has to be seized upon. Usually when you have the cash
in your hand and you actively want to buy one it'll take months (even years).
For a period of short term roller-coaster finances the end result will be well
worth it!!

As far as value? Well I love these cars and would like to see their values
shooting high to prevent any being scrapped or run as bangers etc, but
realistically I can't see this going past £1k. It would still be a bargain, for
what you'd actually buy as an alternative car would pale in a comparison!

howsabout the montego turbo really quick car (though it used to spend most of its time in bits i think a lego car would have been more robust)

and one of my mates had a triumph 2500PI in a dirty brown colour with more rust than paint (this was about 1989)....he reckoned it was good for 130mph (i dont know i never managed to keep up :D )

I used to drive a Montego VDP with a 2.0i engine as a taxi and even that was a surprisingly fast car. Unfortunately the brakes, handling and lights were all dreadful so you couldn't go round corners fast, you couldn't rush up to the corners and brake and you couldn't even see where the corners were.

When I was in college, my mate used to thrash a creamy coloured Maestro 1.3 around. Not sure if the car or the driver was needed to be praised, but once, we went out in snow around the local housing estate, he had the car totally sussed out, on top of this he raced a nova 1.4sri and he was on his back end all along the journey, he treat the car like sh*t and it refused to die!! He scraped it and felt very guilty, so he bough another one. Besides that, i could and cannot stand Maestro/Austin/Rover brand cars. Sorry.

Talking volvo's, how about the 850 TR.

Finally, my ultimate ultimate Q car would be a BMW M6 (old one).

850 T5-Rs are pretty rare.... 240bhp instead of the 225 of the T5, but it was an overboost, they couldn't do the extra power continuously, just for short sprints. S70 T5s have more power, are more common and less of a collectors item.

I had a Rover 200 VI from new in 1999.1.8 vvc,145bhp.It looked like a run of the mill 200,apart from different alloys, rear disks,& body coloured rear spoiler.Normal 200`s had black spoilers.Cracking discreet Q car.I frightend many a faster car in it :D .It could hit 70 mph ish in 2nd gear.0-60 was quoted as 7.2 secs, but i reckon it was more like high 6`s.Get it it on cam over 4000 rpm & it flew, all the way to 7250 rpm.Loved it. :)

Talking about Rovers, there is of course the Rover 620ti, 200 bhp with grandad styling..... you could get that 200bhp engine in a few Rovers, fast cars that turn into brown dust quick too!

surely the point of a Q car is that it looks boggo standard but goes like sh1t off a hot polished shovel!

The lotus carlton goes like a rocket and looks like one too!

you need something run of the mill with a stonking big engine. My vote goes to the Cavalier V6, prefferably with some ghetto alloys (steel wheels without wheel trims). It'll look like every other ex-minicab (i.e. rusty) but it'll hit 145mph and 60 in 7 and a bit seconds. Mine (sadly missed) would do 70 in second and 110 in third (on the autobahn)

I know its not french, but my ZX isn't quite a Q car. it looks rouggh because it is!
