Is there anyway of testing a driveshaft off the car?

yes - you're looking for stiffness, slack and bends - so rotate a joint while bending it and see what it feels like, grasp each side of the joint and try and move them in relation to each other (twist and simple up and down)

Bends are a bit more difficult - but look at the thing critically - then put a straight edge at it in 2 places, 90 degrees apart.

Obviously any other damage must be assessed - and its probably worth while cleaning all joints and fitting new boots while the shaft if out.

right, thanks for that.
My 106 needs the good old offside driveshaft, the boots gone too. I was planning to get another out of the local scrappers, I'm sure they'll give a garantee, just wanted to give the shaft best odds before taking it away.
