Thanks for all the comments/suggestions everyone - interesting to see what folk feel about airbags, I must be in a minority of one that doesn't like them...

I've spent since getting home from work this evening ferreting around the driver's seat and steering column connections with no joy (finding all sorts of interesting things there on the way), but read weety's post about the passenger side airbag...

you've guessed it!
weety wrote:has it got a passenger airbag? if it has its probably the connection under the passenger seat.....apparently their can be a problem if a er larger person sits there as the seat can crush the connector (well thats what the garage told my ex wife about her xsara's air bag problem.....we decided not to tell her largish brother) Very Happy
Well, weety you're bang on the money! Thanks!! WHOOOHOOO \:D/

Someone had spilt some oil on one of the down ramps, he came along, started to skid, panicked and hit the brakes. The wheels locked & the car slid down the ramp and smashed straight into a concrete wall. The car was either M or N reg, but he said the airbag and seatbelt tensioners went off as they should and he escaped with no injuries. The front of the car was pretty well caved in though.
Wonder what speed he was doing?!
Bet he wasn't hanging around if it was stoved in as hard as you say it was!

Now, next on the list of ailments of this new arrival is the lack of ANY ventilation blowers... :D

Air bag.

Post by goldfinche »

Was talking to a friend today when the question came up on what did I think of air bags, I said that I thought that they were a good thing. As it turned out the partner of the friend was in an accident and there was no air bag and he was very severely injured with a crushed chest, the opinion of the surgeon was that if he had had a air bag he would have been bruised and a bit battered but would not have had life threatening injuries and been in hospital for months. With seat belts only there can be some pretty bad bruising and other damage but crush injuries are avoided with air bags. Not 100% but nothing is.
Anyway thats the opinion of the chap that see's and has to repair the damage of a soft human body coming into contact with something that is a lot harder.
Cheers.

Had an accident in 87 in a brand new Escort Van, drove into the side of a marina that pulled out in front of me, i was doing 55-60 mph, broke my nose pushing the steering wheel through the screen with it, big bruise across my chest and waist from the seat belt and bruises on my shins from the dash, At least with an air bag my nose would have been intact!!! Still i fared better than the dick that pulled out on me, force of the impact pushed him (still sitting in the drivers seat) into the passenger side, took the rescue team 2 hours to cut him out and he died an hour after that.
