New car required- 306-406 xantia?

Post by ssray »

Okey dokey it appears i was a muppett to get rid of my bx and land myself with a heap of spanish/german technology(1993 td toledo) and i hope you will forgive me and allow me back into the fold.
i`m looking in order at 406(2.1 then 1.9) a xanita or possibly a 306td
i have up to 2k and the main reason for the change is i now work 120ish miles from home so i will be going up the m40 quite a lot(not every day but aleast once a week) i must be able to run on veg(2.1 ok?)
i am assuming that a 406 would be my best bet as i think a 306 may be a bit small and noiser?
Thanks for your input Ray
P.S. anybody want a german /spanish classic?

Easy for that money I'd be looking for a low mileage Xantia HDI, much cheaper than the 406 or 306.

Ah a man after my own heart!!
I thought about the 2.1 myself but was concerned about using biofuel with a fuel pump that was not bosch.
I know someone however that is using a 50/50 mix in a hdi!!
I would go for a Xantia 1.9 and get the pump tweaked. Unless someone here has not had problems using biofuel in the 2.1?

Im using a 50/50mix myself with the 2.1 and while its rough to startup its fine once warm.

I think the startup is down to dodgey plugs though :( so need to get them sorted.

I've fitted a fuel heat exchanger to mine have you done anything like that on yours?

ssray. do you mean proper bio or do you mean veg oil as in cooking, sunflower etc?

If you mean the latter my ZX ran on a 50/50 mix with no addatives whatsoever, I just poured it straight into the fuel tank, the car ran with no problems starting or otherwise for several weeks.. 8)

The only noticeable differences were, lower engine tone on tickover, 10% less mpg, and the car performed better, in as much as the car was slightly faster when accerating.

Were it legal (ooeerr) I would use it all the time... :) :)

I have the bosch pump in my ZX..

If you want to run veg im lead to believe that the 2.1td isnt a good idea. Mainly due to the fact the injection pump is normally a lucas. Lucas and veg not a good idea. Biodiesel on the other hand will work in either the 2.1 or the 1.9 perfectly well. And thats proper made biodiesel not the stuff that some people peddle that is just vegetable oil with thinners.
Personally I would got for a bosch pumped 1.9td a cracking engine in any car runs well on veg and bio. And it is quite easy to turn it up for extra power if you want it and they are common as muck so spare parts are easy and cheap to get hold of.

For more on using veg and bio and help on choosing a cars try : http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php

in my old bx and current classic toledo i use about 80-90%veg and unleaded to thin it.
i understand about lucas and would prob go 2 tank.
the reason behind a 2.1 is that they are claimed to do 44mpg at 90mph(in other countries of course) and i am going to be doing a 110 mile m/way journey quit often so the lower revs should make it more better

So what's wrong with the lucas injection pump?
Be careful!

the lucas pump is a rotary type and is good on diesel but as soon as you hit it with a bit of cold veg it will break, maybe not straight away but it will break,so if you had a lucas pump you should use a 2 tank system,i.e. start on diesel when hot switch to diesel.

How do you mean cold veg oil??

At the moment no heat exchanger or such like. Do you have any pics or a write up on your setup as would be interesting considering i get veg in at about 40p/litre :) Is it some form of inline electrical heater on the fuel line?? i do run it with BP ultimate as the other part of the mix as the extra addatives in it should help offset any veg degredation :)

Like i said i think the startup is rough but beyond that after a miunute or so she is fine.

have a look here http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php
high compression 2 is the man to look for.
i have no set up i have allways mixed and as such i have made sure i have a bosch pump, when and if i get a supply of wvo i will go 2 tank with a heater in the tank,to aid using slightly thicker stuff at low temps.
