But XMs are scary! Is it true that auto's have more than their fair share of problems? A V6 with a manual box just doesn't seem right - unless it's Italian...

I do like them though. I've just never been brave enough to take the plunge!

I've seen and heard of several XM auto boxes being pronounced dead. Manual is just so much more re-assuring :-)

Id like a V6 or a late 2.5 TD.

Still prefer CX's though.

Well, in my confused state, I'm currently considering either a Fiat Panda 4x4 (old style) or a Mazda MX6. Two very different beasts!

I was considering the Acadiane with GSA engine currently on Ebay too...

If you can find one in a non rotten state these are indeed a lot of fun, but not French - if you want a 4 X 4 why not see about doing a 4x4 conversion to a 2CV - I gather these are seriously good fun.

The Acad is certainly good value. I know the bloke who's selling too...

Could put it on my existing classic car policy for little or no cost.

TO EBAY!!

Well, just broke Tesco's insurance on-line thingy by getting quotes on everything from a Skoda Favorit to a Mazda Xedos. That's £260 to £565 by the way!

BX 16v was £528 but a 19TGD was still £372 which is only slightly less than another consideration which is a ZX Volcane at £385. The Volcane isn't exactly sluggish so that seems good value to me! Would need an approved immobiliser though.

How did my previous two options fair? Fiat Panda - £202. Mazda MX6 - £507, cheaper than the Xedos saloon!

Perhaps I should wait a few years before getting my V6 kicks!

Or buy that Acad...ooh it's tempting...

I'm guessing you're on the young side for insuring anything more than a hairdryer..... I have difficulty making my insurance go OVER £200, even for a CX.

Well, it's better than when I was the wrong side of 25 a few years back. I had an Impreza at the time and four figure insurance! Well, it would've been if I'd actually kept the car for a year...

Thinking ZX now - see Citroen forum.

So in actual fact you're no more than a couple of years younger than I am.

I haven't paid over £250 for a year's fully-comp insurance since I was 25, and I have never driven small under-powered cars. Methinks you may be looking in the wrong places.

Unless you have a fistfull of points on your licence of course, or have crashed everything you've owned, which I doubt.

It's where you live that's the crippler. I bet Dorset's cheap compared to urban West Yorkshire where I am. I'm 34, full no claims, desk-bound job, and I have to search like hell to beat £400 every year. Bradford's full of non-insured drivers, unfortunately.

Well, I'm 27 with a clean licence and full no claims. No accidents. Rural Northants. Girlie as named driver. She has 3 points.

My 2cv costs £190 a year agreed value, unlimited mileage and my Rover V8 on a classic policy with the same conditions was £144!

Whenever I've look for a "normal" car though, Tesco always seem to be ahead of the bunch.

Maybe the lack of garage doesn't help but I do have a driveway.

Eeeek... those are not cheap insurance prices!

I pay the same as you do for your 2cv, but on a 405 TD estate, which is about 7 groups higher than a 2cv!

My modified landrover policy is even cheaper... just £94 for the basic premium per year, although that is a limited mileage policy.

Dorset is indeed fairly cheap, but I didn't notice much of a drop when I moved from the outskirts of southampton...

Well, despite being rural, I do come under Daventry as an area but there are much worse places!

Maybe it's time for a change of insurance company...
