New car (to me)

Post by j_roc »

Just gone and bought another car. That now makes 5 cars :- Mondeo, Escort, Sierra, Xantia and, wait for it.......a Rover 418 SLD Turbo (1992 K). It's the one with the 1.8 Peugeot diesel engine. I know it's not German, Sweedish or French, but I thought I would mention it. Annyone know any info on the cooling system on these. Let me explain.
Behind the expansion tank (nearest the kerb on mine) there are 3 metal pipes. 1 pipe goes from the expansion tank into the thermostat housing (rubber connections on each end). The other two are left blank with no pipes, whats connected to these on your Rover. I know that it's a British Leyland motor (or Japanese if you look at it from a different angle) but it has a PSA Engine and Gearbox. Any help on this I would be gratefull. Many thanks - Alex.

No idea im afraid but vaguely on topic...what was the diesel in the Maestro? My parents had an M reg Mastro Clubman turbo diesel but im sure it was a 2 litre. Was this some earlier engine which Rover gave up with and went and swapped to PSA ones?

Maestro had the Perkins diesel based on the Austin O series if I remember correctly (certainly early ones did).

I find the Rover TD much, much more refined but less power, where the Citroen TD had more power but it's not quite as refined as the Rover. Even more so at low revs e.g - 1000 - 2500 rpm.

Rover 218 Turbo diesel utilised the 1769cc XUD engine with turbo ala 205/309. The 218 non turbo used the 1905cc non turbo XUD, but was never badge Rover 219! In France the Honda Concerto was a rebadged Longbridge built 218 diesel.
The Maestro and Montego used the Perkins 2 litre turbo and non turbo direct injection units. The Maestro turbo could average over 50mpg, 100mph and 0-60 in about 11secs and was the same price as a 205XLD for its day. Waxoyl was not included!
200 series are not very good in a crash, had one run get shunted in to the back of a 106 I had a few years ago. 106 - rear wheels in air, crack in bumber, number plate fell off. 200 - front bumper fell off, bonnet creased in two, radiator broke, lights smashed.
