If the story is true, then HPI may not be as good as its cracked up to be.....

Interesting. If you go about the HPI check by their proper procedure I understand you will be covered for this loss. Also I note he comments if you "bought" the EBay item he's offering then you get a mail with advice on not doing what he did in buying.
Reading in between the lines it seems he perhaps took some chances with this purchase that then caused him to fail the HPI compensation claim.
Sad for him though.

well he must have bought it without a logbook from presumably a private seller (i would imagine you could persuade a dealer to take it back)and may be he was spun a yarn about needing to sell quickly and the seller produced a nice HPI check (that he had just freshly printed)....
or he just wants to sell some mediocre advice on e bay for £33 a pop and hopes to panic people
