The "Know Your Citroen Engine Thread"

Well thanks go out to mugatea for this idea.

As I'm not much of a genius when it comes to car names and parts, Plus, getting frustrated with trying to read the forums and then run to the car with things like (on the left as you look at the car its a black box),

I thought it would be time to get a kind of "map of your engine" thread going, For those like me, who can not get their head around the Haynes manual. And I wanted to give something back to this community for helping me get my car sorted.

I will update this post with info and locations so its easier to find what your looking for, and if anyone can supply photos of other Citroen engines, and item names PM me and i will add them to the thread (if you can pm me that is)

Engine

1.9 turbo

Car

97 Xantia

Engine part and location code

LHM reservoir - M1 to P3
LHM reservoir fluid level indicator - O2
Primer pump - A2
Air filter housing / Box - K5 to N9
Fuel filter - I5

Alternator - D9
Oil Filter (blue part) - F8
Fuel Pump - D5 - E6

Quick Diagnosis Checks

Turbo sluggish / slow / not working - Check black Pipes (as can be seen in photo) for cracks / air leaks / splits

Engine hard to start from cold and producing white / blue-ish smoke once started - Check Glow plugs, possibly replacement

Engine Hard to Start from warm or cold, check Fuel Leak off pipes on Injectors (Located above Glow plugs)

Strange Grinding noise and smoke / burning smell, from the front left of engine bay, Check Air Con pump clutch to make sure its not seized.

If anyone else can lend a hand with part names and locations or quick diagnosis checks would be appreciated, ill add them to the list.

What a good idea! May I suggest a few "pointer" thingies as well?

I would have done my DS IE engine, but you would need an X-Ray camera or to be able to do layers!
The engine is down there somewhere, and, despite a DS bonnet being the biggest alloy pressing used on a car, the engine compartment is full. :o

Woohoo - Citroen Battleships!!

Will O7 sink the whole lot!?

Guess I could take a piccy of my '93 Xm S1 24v V6 engine bay
just to put everyone off wanting one? Spill a spanner in this engine
bay and you'll never see it again... :D

Same applies with a DS. Even worse, it has a particular appetite for M11 sockets. :( Tying string on spanners before you use them is not just in jest!!

Teh
Was it the glowplug on the cambelt side of the engine? Even though you could not find it, the very first motorway you use, out it will come on to the road. :o

yep, it was the cam belt side, it slipped down between the engine and the alternator

ho and happy new year all

It will reappear!!

I did the same. Always happens when someone is watching

I managed to get a long flexible strip down behind and "teased" it until it fell out, or rather, fell down to a point that I could get hold of it.

I'd try, better than have it fall out at some speed somewhere where it might just do a spot of mischief otherwise...

Glad to hear all your starting problems are at an end. Nice start to 2007 :)

It was indeed, a Mk1 BX16 RS. With the PRN dash.

Quite an easy car to work on really, compared to the Xantia.

I've got one of those, its a Jan '86 C reg in red. I bought it when I was a student in 1993 and it was my everyday car for a few years. Its in storage in a barn at my mum's in Lincs, been off the road since 1999 unfortunately, with leaking hydraulic & fuel pipes and a very badly worn clutch. I've got all the parts to fix it, just not the spare time or the inclination at the moment.

great idea & so simple - now why couldn't Haynes do that?
