If there was one thing that'll see all Xantiae off the road this would be it.
That and a leaking heater matrix.

Is he also going to use the suspension struts as spears?

If you want something which is really endurable for underbody work would suggest that you look at Epoxy Tar, available from most good marine chandlers. As it's name suggests a mixture of pitch and epoxy sticks like the proverbial, dries to a nice shiny black gloss and is impervious to most anything. Prime use is for coating under water steel keels etc.CitroJim wrote:They start off pretty thick but those in the picture had gone so thin they'd gone through in holes..
I reckon the problem is that moisture gets between the rubber covering on the lower side of the plate and the steel and corrosion sets in. The seem to corrode from the bottom up and not top-down as I've never seen water lying on the top despite there being a lip.
A good coat of underbody wax (say something like Dynax S-50) realliped as needed should keep any water out and the corrosion at bay.

Mine need changing now too, just popped a screwdriver through.
So i'm bringing this thread back to life quickly just to get everyone else to check theirs!
I can't imagine what could happen if they pop through while on the motorway?!!?
I nearly ignored it since paul (citroenxm) mentioned it, but i did take a closer look and saw some rust peeling through the top, and I just couldn't ignore it!!
Check yours now before we have a possible fatality

Just discovered that I have this problem on the O/S of my Xantia 97 1.9 TD estate which has done 150K miles.
Spheres should've been done a while back but haven't got round to it.
A few weeks ago i hit a speed hump slightly too fast and I sudeenly started hearing this rubber sounding squeaking noise from the (what appeared to be) coming from behind the dash/bulkhead area drivers side area.
I noticed severe corrosion on the Strut top plate. It has started to force it's way through into the engine bay. The front half has completely corroded (can see the top of the gaiter below!), so essentially it is only the rear half that is preventing a 'spearing' moment occuring. The rubber is perished but still intact and attached to the plate.
I will not use the car now till this issue is sorted (luckily I have a motorcycle too!).
Took a look in the Haynes manual .... what a waste of time, not a mention of this part!
What is the latest on price and availability for a new part please??
cheers.

Hi bigblackfalco, welcome to the FCF
Unfortunatly, the strut tops are still a dealer only part and prices are on the rise, think they're at around £120-130 a side at the moment, do ask for a trade discount though
You may be lucky and find a local scrappy Xantia with decent strut tops, those on the series 2 Xantias have a better design.
If it makes you feel any better, Citroen XM owners have to fork out £400 a side
Strut tops will be the death of Xantias and XMs

If you do goto aScrap yard, try and get some from a 1998 S reg onwards car, and it must be either an LX or SX spec car for the smaller feed pipes..
I say this as theres a 80 percent BETTER chance of getting VERY good tops from a later car.. the tops are longer lasting.
I put some 1998 T reg tops and struts onto my 1994 L reg SX TD, these tops had done 250k and had no sign of any serious rust what so ever!
You may well need the strut to go with them! So get the top and strut as a complete unit!
