Forum maintenance Monday 12/06/2017 - Completed

Post by xantia_v6 »

On Monday, 12/06/2017 I will be taking this forum off-line to move it to a new server.

As part of the server transfer, all the operating system and support software will be upgraded to latest versions and the phpBB forum software will have a major upgrade to V3.2.0.

As one of the measures to improve the ongoing security of the site, the Tapatalk interface will be permanently disabled from that date. The removal of Tapatalk has been covered in the topic: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=57787

The site will be off-line from approximately 7:00 am (BST). All going well, it should be back on-line by 3:00 pm.

The system migration to out new VPS server and upgrade of all software to current versions has been successfully completed.

Please clear your browser cache (once) to eliminate any strange effects, such as drop-down menus being unexpectedly open. See viewtopic.php?f=13&t=57910

Following the upgrade of the FCF server software, you may notice a few minor differences on the site:
  • The forum font and some display elements have changed slightly.
  • External links now open in a new browser tab.
  • Support for emoji in posts. You can cut and paste or simply type your own emoji shortcuts into posts and the emoji will render. You can find a comprehensive list of emoji shortcuts here. For example, in a post you can enter :grinning: and a scalable grinning emoji should be rendered.
  • Tapatalk access to the forum is no longer available. We will endeavour to assist users who have difficulty accessing the site using a mobile browser.
  • The Google search box is no longer on the page header, although still available after clicking the "Search" button.
  • The tri-colour logo image in the header now scales with browser size.
We have also moved to a new server at a different hosting company that should give better overall performance with less susceptibility to slow operation.

There are also major changes "under the skin" to the way the forum processes and saves content. In particular, the new version is installed on php V7, which has allowed is to upgrade the entire server to more recent and stable versions of OS and service software.

Excellent job Mike - all working fine for me once the browser cache was emptied. A big thank you for undertaking all the required work behind the scenes.

Yep, looks pretty good to me.

One small niggle - can you change the default so that the drop-down menus for Profile, Topic Tools (both top and bottom of the thread) and Jump to are suppressed and need to be called up? They spoil the page layout for me at the moment. In fact the Jump to menu covers up the Reply box and any text you type underneath.

That is a sign that you have not cleared your browser cache. Hit ctrl-f5 if on a PC, otherwise see Marc's post viewtopic.php?f=13&t=57910

Looking good to me Mike, Well done, good work!

Paul, a cache refresh will resolve your issue with Drop-downs... I had the same but Ctrl+F5 (on Firefox/Linux) sorted it a treat :)

It's looking a lot quicker for me too and also, I like changes in the we_universal theme... It somehow looks neater and easier on the eye...

I've been Ctr-F5 a lot believe you me but I'll try again.

Well that seems to have done it. Hmm, why did the previous half dozen of more refreshes not do the job? Maybe it'll come back.

That's exactly what happens prior to cache clearing - all the menus on the profile for contacting were permanently open. A cache clear will resolve it.

A refresh won't - a clear and reload will though.

I suspect that a single Ctrl-F5 doesn't cut the mustard. It needs to be done for EVERY topic that you open that you've opened before the upgrade.

What do you mean clear and reload? Exit from FCF or exit the browser?

That should not be the case, as the elements that are causing the issue are mostly in the page header, and are only in the cache once, depite being re-used on most forum pages.

Which OS and browser are you using? Do you have multiple browser tabs open on the site?

Win 7 and IE11 here at work.
xantia_v6 wrote: 12 Jun 2017, 13:29Do you have multiple browser tabs open on the site?
Indeed I do. One each for For Sale, Citroen and Peugeot. Once the forum was back on-line I opened up each tab in turn and Ctrl-F5-ed each one a couple of times before opening up any topic. The machine at work gets switched off each day so it was a fresh instance of the browser this morning, not something left over from last week.
