Planned downtime in June

Post by Xaccers » 04 Jun 2013, 10:02

There are several outages planned for maintenance this month.

04-06-13 New server
After over 6 years of service (roughly 4 of them hosting the forum), running pretty much 24/7, I am retiring the internals of the current server and replacing them with a spanking new motherboard, memory and CPU.
I'm also going to be upgrading the OS.
So at some point tonight (unless I get back from London way too late) the server will go down.
At some point in the future when finances allow, I'll also upgrade the hard drives.

11-06-13 New internet connection
O2 are selling/sold their Broadband to Sky.
Sky provide fibre to my area.
On the 11th June I will be transferring over (hopefully with more success and less pain than when I tried with BT who totally screwed up) to them which should provide more bandwidth and better stability.
It should also allow O2/Be customers to access the forum.
With a bit of luck the transition will have minimal outage.

DPD being totally useless have failed to deliver the parts today so I don't know when the upgrade is going to take place.

I managed to wrangle it so I was home when DPD tried to deliver today so the server will be down this evening.

Nah too unreliable and restrictive.
I've got to use a proper OS

Don't say it has been upgraded from a 32b to a 64b Abacus (b equals beads!).

Well it seems to be running much better than before, there may be a few outages due to updates needing a reboot and at some point I'll be confirming if the graphics card is faulty or not.

Why does a server need a graphics card? :?
