Planned outage 28/01/10 - between 20:00 and 00:00 - complete

Post by Xaccers »

Jim very kindly dropped round the UPS last night so tonight I'll be connecting it up to the server and testing.

This means there will be a few outages this evening from 8pm

Hopefully there will only be two, one for connecting the server to the UPS, and another as a test power outage.

Once everything is working, I'll update the thread title to say completed.

We're now running on a beeping UPS :D
It's got about 80 minutes of juice left.

In a few minutes I'll tell it that the server needs 70 minutes to shut down so it should kick in and tell the server to power off.

Ok 59 minutes is the max so we have 10 minutes or so before the next shutdown.

And we're back.
OK so the server shuts down, and powers back up.
Did need to repair the session table though so I will look into automating that.
If I can't, then at least we can remote in and manually repair it.

Thanks for putting up with the disruptions :)

Good work sir :D

We can all relax now... The phpbb_sessions table is a delicate little flower. Sometimnes the phpbb_search and phpbb_members tables get broken and you can tell if this is the case as search and/or the memberlist display will fail.

In any case, the SQL Server will report broken tables in the NT event log...

Should be OK if the UPS software closes the server down in a nice orderly fashion. Can it be set to shut down the MySQL daemon first (mysqld-nt) before initiating a server shutdown proper?

The FCF backup failed this morming. It was only 414 bytes in size

The BXC backup was fine...

I've repaired the table.

While the UPS was giving the server a signal to shut down, it wasn't giving it long enough to actually do so.
I've now increased the delay so the server should be shut down gracefully well before the power to it from the UPS is cut.

Jim, did you get a self test passed email last night?

No, unless it got tangled up in the mailserver spamtrap. It's mighty fussy in what it lets through

I'll check the logs as soon as I'm home...
