If it's a stepper motor (which seems likely, as it could then be set by the controller to a pre-determined position) , there's no simple way of wiring an external supply to it :-(
Your description seems very much to be pointin to a faulty controller board.

Since you have air blowing at whatever temperature it feels like, it indicates that the flap is moving, and with the metal connector not broken, it means that the drive mechanism operates the flap.
That would put the motor and drive assembly out of contention.

The French site writes about faulty climate control ECU’s, replaced by a modified version, part Nº PR6461 G6.
That lives high up towards the centre, behind the glove box.
Cars of a more recent vintage than yours will have the modified ECU.
With a bit of luck, the wreckers won’t know the value of that, and let go cheaply.
Back tomorrow.

ok i have finally had a chance to have another go at the car......took the glovebox out and there isnt a aircon ecu behind it....there are no wiring looms heading of in that direction either (other than the one to the fans)....is it likely to be behind the centre console?

puzzled again :?

‘R reg xantia 1.9td’, is that a Mk II ?
I understand that the Mk II dash is totally different from the Mk I dash.

The control module is sort of between the blower motor and the heating controls. It is mounted vertically almost next to the centre part of the dash. It slides up into a sort of recess in the dash for it. If you follow the thin wires on the blower motor connector you will find it.

I might be able to shed some light on this as I recently changed the matrix on my Activa and have a picture showing the wiring etc with dash removed. I also have another Activa stored at work with its dash removed which I can take a look at tomorrow.

Looking at the first of your three pictures there is a large rectangular ecu type box situated on top the the flat faced piece of plastic to the right of the fan housing.

In the third picture look towards the far right side and you will see some thin wires connnecting onto another tall thin ecu. This one is removed by unscrewing it from the bottom and pulling it down.

Having said that I don't know which ecu does/controls what!

Send me your email address and I'll send you the picture I have it's from the drivers side but of good quality.

right i think i have found it.....as described its high up between the heater main 'fan' box and the plastic piping after the pollen filter.....

its a white plastic connector with loads of wires going into it ....but....

i can get it of :( :( :(

it seems to detach upwards and i guess that the ecu will come with it if i can get it to come free (but i cant) definately not interested in detaching sideways (i can see metal 'prongs' underneath the connector when i er gently lever it with a screwdriver

trouble is there is very little space in there so i cant get a good grip on it

now where is my hammer............

me again....my woes increase ( i think i must have offended the great citroen god)

now the air con doesnt work....what is weird is that the front fans work intermitantly (with the air con switch on)

so either i have created a new electrical fault mucking around with various connections or it is out of gas (it was last regassed two years ago)

does anyone know of a good place to get regassing done around the orpington (south london) area?

Cheers

Peter

The cooling fans must always turn on at the low speed when the air conditioning is switched on.
Looks like a switching fault in the aircon ECU, possibly the connector plug.
It’s a sign that you’re getting close to getting it out.
Wouldn’t think of low gas now, the fans turning first is the ‘front end’ of the new fault.
Once the fans are back to normal, you can experiment with the pressure sensor plug to check for gas pressure and compressor function.

The board must slide out of grooves that have springy catches where some of the cutouts are. :?
Not the hammer yet, still the screwdriver. :)

me again sorry for the long delay been working long days.....

i have someone stripping air con ecu plus other bits of an old activa for me but i was wondering if its possible to do a quick bodge just to get my air con working again

disconnecting the brown temp sender on top of the thermostat causes the fans to run at full speed

disconnecting the pressure sensor switch and bridging the low pressure side causes the fans to run however bridging high pressure side (ignition on engine not running) and the clutch doesnt engage

there is no live feed to either of the thicker wires so i assume thats the problem

so if i run a live feed to the appropriate thick wire am i just replacing the role of the air con ecu in 'telling' the air con to go on?

i assume i i do that the system would still be protected from low gas by the existing switches

(to be on the safe side i would also get the fans to run on low speed all the time)

are there any flaws in this cunning plan?

by the end of this i can see myself having the only xantia with a fully manual air con system!
