Dont think so -

The non-a/c belt must clear the compressor pulley and probably at least one extra idler wheel.
The aircon electric clutch should not activate if you set the aircon off ?

If the compressor suddenlygets so hard to pull that it burns the belt - the a/c system must have a leak.

thanks anders..... i think its my fault, i have been running a 12v feed to the comp. so its been on when ever the car was on but i think the clutch was week and it wor out and started to rattle and it made the pully verry hot and i think that made the belt snap.

can i take the clutch off and leave it like that.

thanks again

I believe you will have to undo the compressor completely to clear it from the belt run.
The electric cluctch would be a pressfit onto the compressor axle.
Cant see it as a big problem "converting" to a non-a/c.
Usually a cool beer and a thorough visual inspection of the affected area of the belt run will make things clear - try it 8)
