xantia 1.9td will not start

xantia 1.9td will not start

car will only start if i bump it, then if i switch it off and leave for a short while will not start again seemed to be battery but RAC man came round and said it was the altenator.Had a mechanic around and he said it was ok but could not find fault anybody got any ideas i could try
