Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

If you are doubting the condition or have no idea when it was last changed, replace it. Cam belts are cheap compared to the cost of repairing the engine. Cracks can appear at the sides of the teeth but these can only be seen with the belt off. I've never done one on a TU engine but it should be easy to do. Better than a BX diesel!

Just installed a new aftermarket (Serck Marston) radiator in my '94 405 GTX. Car has a 2,0 litre motor (type RFX). The new radiator has an extra open pipe about 3 cm long at the bottom of the plastic tank on the fill side (left when looking under bonnet). The extra pipe is quite in the way of the power steering pump, leaving me only about 1 cm...

Hi mick, if you are on about the coupling between the column and the rack, it should be a splined split clamp like on just about any other car on the road, have yet to see anything different, you have to completely remove the pinch bolt to get the coupling off because it locates in a groove that goes around the splined shafts.

I have since changed the cam belt on my 306XR. The engine shows now improvement and still pinks lightly during acceleration most noticible at 2,800 to 3,000 RPM.
I have since supected that the belt is off by a tooth or two but have no way to confirm this as I cannot find the locking holes for the flywheel. Haynes manual suggested...

Hi Michael, Yep could be burnt contacts in the pre-heating relay, could be air getting in through a split leakoff pipe or the blanking cap, it could even be the stop solenoid sticking but that is unlikely.

I'm sure someone will say I'm totally wrong but my theory has always been that the engine senses the heat and so doesn't supply as much fuel as when you start the engine from cold. That's certainly how it was with my old 1.6 Carburetor 405 with a dodgy automatic choke.

Me again
Apparently you should't hold power steering on full lock for very long!!! (Not good 4 it)
Mine makes straining hydraulic noises when i do it for too long....

On full lock and steering sharply at low speeds the steering makes an awful grating sound (accompanied by a squeel too).
It sounds and feels as though the pinion teeth are jumping along the teeth on the rack, though I hope that's not the case!!!

Might be wrong, but my brother spoke to a Independant Peugeot specialist and they said that the so called idling was normal
My 205 (1.6) idles about 800rpm - 1100rpm when coldish, gets better as it gets warmer

I own a 205 (1.6), and whenever i get to about 1/3 left on the fuel guage, its flickers about all over the place.(Sometimes on reserve when i know there is loads left!!)
To get round this i go by the milage on the re-set counter... (46 Litres gets me about 330 miles, which is roughly 32/33 mpg

What viscosity of oil are you using?
Some synthetics are great but very thin so it's more likely to seep all over the place through wee gaps.
But who knows? I'm no expert on all this.
How is the car performing?

As a quick temp fix, I tried cleaning the butterfly valve on the end of the throttle cable by spraying some carb clearner into it whilst holding the valve open, this worked for a while, however havent come up with anything yet - except driving around with my foot covering the throttle pedal whilst slowing down.......

Hi
A couple of things to try. When you switch the air con on, do you hear a relay-type click from under the bonnet as the elctromagnetic clutch engages on the aircon pump?
Secondly, do the ordinary rdiator fan(s) come on when you press the switch?
Also, a bit vague in this cold weather, but drive around with the heater full on and really warm up...

I bought a 1999 306 LX yesterday. As I understand, when I press the A/C button, I should be able to hear a change in engine revs. However, I don't hear a thing and the rev counter stays put. Is it just not engaging because it's cold outside? I need to check that it's working properly before the warranty runs out in 3 months time.

Weak mixture and too far advanced ignition timing are the most comon causes of pinking but there can be other's like carbon deposits causing hot spots leading to pre-ignition and hence pinking, check timing and injection, if they are ok a de-coke may be required.

Starter motors on these and now days most engines are of the pre-engaged type, this means that the pinion gear is pushed along the starter shaft by the solenoid and is engaged with the starter ring gear on the flywheel before the main current is applied, at the end of it's travel the solenoid closes the contacts that allow the main current to pass...

Could be sucking air in somewhere, likely places are the vacuum pipe from the manifold to the brake servo and vacuum advance pipe to distributor.

I've had a 405 SRi for years and it's been generally reliable. However lately it has started 'playing up' - just as I was going to trade it for a newer car !!! The wife reckons the car knows and doesn't want to go !!!
The idling speed has become erratic, the car generally idles much too fast, whilst it's driveable it's obviously a nuisance in...

There is a great big resistor low down on the front nearside, can't remember if it's to the front in the wheel arch or behind the bumper but I remember it being easey to find without disturbing anything, being resistive when it's working properly it get's hot, the bracket rusted away on mine and left the resistor swinging from the cables.

If you car has antilock brakes there may be special requirements for bleeding though I'm not sure, after fitting the calipers make sure the pistons are pushed as far in as possible, smear copper grease on the bleed nipple threads, find a piece of clear flexible tube that is a snug airtigh fit over the nipple, get a jar with about an inch of fluid...

You can stick with the 16v ignition, injection and ECU, just have to rip out the old wiring loom. It is possible to use the 8v ECU and wiring loom, but you'll need an adaptor for the distributor.
You can use the 1.9GTi gearbox, which has slightly more suitable ratios than the 16v one, but they'll both fit; and the existing 1.9GTi driveshafts stay...

Can anyone help with a fix for a 306 DT: the water in fuel dashboard light intermittently comes on (once a week). I have replaced the fuel filter, and cleaned the fuel filter housing. Hi, is it a petrol or a diesel, you might have a air lock in the cooling system, any leak will more than likely cause air locks even if you bleed the system, when the engine is hot the pressure in the cooling system will force coolant through the leak lowering the coolant level, when the engine cools and everything contracts air will be sucked in...

Had a 205D few years ago, fantastic car. Did the same thing when running low, think it has something to do with the operation of the pump and the positioning of the intake.
Like you, used it as a reminder to get some fuel.

The trailing arm bearings have gone on near side rear.(P405 GR Est, 1990/1) My old Haynes describes (complex?) procedure, but my later one says dont touch rear suspension at all. Whats the crack? Hi All,
I suspect my A/C cooling coil is leaking. Is there another way to gain acesss to the Cooling coil besides dismantling the dash.
My Haynes manual seems to suggest that dasboard removal is the only way to replace the A/C cooling coil.
Any inputs appreciated.

Is the compressor clutch on when the AC is switched on? There should be a click sound comming from the AC compressor.
If the clutch is not working, very likely that there is no R134 A in the system.The first thing I would do is to get the AC recharged. It my be simply that there is not enough R134A in the system.

I had this problem after replacing a rear brake pipe on a 405 gri. No amount of conventional bleeding would prevent the pedal sinking to the floor. The rear suspension on the 305 Diesel Estate is identical to the Citroen C15 van! (same dampers, trailing arms, bearings etc).
You need special tool to compress the rear srings to change the dampers. This tool is usually found at Citroen dealers, although a few independent specialists have it too.

I have just bought a 405 STDT estate with 145,000 miles on it. It is rather difficult to drive smoothly. I've been looking at the diesel 206 as a replacement for our 205. Having a browse through the 206 Haynes manual in Halfords I was surprised to see a change to the familar XUD cambelt tensioning. It seems that special tools are required to measure for correct tension. Does anyone know if it is still a DIY job?
