Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Quite easy, the thermostat screws into the thermostat housing sealed by a rubber washer and is connected to the fuel pump by a short bowden cable,simply replace the old one and check BOL for adjustment instructions, you should not lose a lot of coolant changing it, look on these pages for gems about bleeding the system

Could perhaps be the swing arm bearings starting to bind up with corrosion or another possibility that catches a lot out (including mechanics) is the adjustment rod (front to back) being slightly out of adjustment & thereby not telling the H/C it's time to come down.

When the BX is started after a few days, the front comes up in 1 second jumps , whereas the back just slowly rises up. It doesn't seem normal; i've seen that the pressure reg could be at fault here, or is it just a sign of a duff accumultaor sphere?

Normally I'd say these additives are waste of good money.
If your engine is in good condition - with a decent service history on engine oil (& filter) changes - then there is nothing extra to gain using these additives. Instead keep obeying oil change intervals using a good modern oil - like a synthetic 5w40 type rated for turbodiesels.

The good blast method seems to work well with diesels...just make sure the cam belt is up to it!!
According to the previous owner, my Xantia failed first time on emmissions...20-minute blast later it passed!

Just been offered a 98 C15D van, 192,000 miles and an MOT failure on emissions amongst some other minor details. As the little Van would be quite useful to me, and its very cheap, I was considering buying it.
It runs well and does not seem to have visible smoke after its warmed up.

On hydractive suspension, middle spheres are responsible for 'floating', while corner spheres take only short and sharp bumps.

The best description of this light's operation I was told was that it basically is the engine management system saying Hey Dude; something's malfunctioned. Nothing sinister necessarily, just to let you know that something has been playing up.
We have a BX TZi that used to do it occasionally. We tracked it down to crap getting on the Lambda (O2)...

Standing in front of engine - at RHS on engine cylinder head - yoy have the large top coolant hose running to the radiator.
Exactly where this large hose is attached - you have the thermostat housing - wherein you should find a sensor fitted.

Wiring is not as simple on modern cars as it was earlier models. My 1998 Xantia was OK - just the same as all my previous cars. Now the car makers use multiplex wiring. The Berlingo is probably one of these. The Xsara certainly is. Try Towsure.com - they do kits specially for multiplex systems

the little black stick sounds more like an aftermarket imobiliser,to fit the keypad system would be very expensive & would require the the replacement of the diesel injection pump & a lot of wiring.it would probably be easier to just bypass it.

The high speed cooling fan problem may be the 'Bitron' box at fault. Located around the NS headlamp i think.
The interior fan problem may be the 'Resitor' pack' located on the fan unit itself.
The fan unit is above the feet of the NSF footwell. Check for signs of water ingress to the unit. This is often caused by a split plastic scuttle panel...

I too have experienced this problem but on a Halfords branded filter. It's due to the lack of Non Return Valve within the canister which means the filter drains when the engine is switched off and doesn't build up oil pressure quickly enough when the engine is started. I now prime any make of filter by disabling the fuel pump (if petrol) or...

hi,
its quite straight forward, remov the offside wheel(drivers side), and then remove the engine cover if one is in place, once this is out of the way you will be able to see clearly most of the belt and its assosiated pullies, the majority of it though is simply following the book but adapting for short cuts! ;)

How hard is it to change the alternator belt on 1.9 td xant I am not sure if it is auto tensioner or not but it has got air-con and is a 96-97 car, don't trust the haynes manual when they say its not to hard anything nasty to look out for.....

Well, unless you are in the habit of showing off the underneath of your car all the time, I shouldn't worry too much. The spheres are made of about 1/4 thick material so I very much doubt that they will rust away . . .
. . .but if you're into blue neon lights and such maybe you should get them chromed . . .

Not a good sign, but: check the little cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel. A flap hinges down which covers the fuses and should contain the owners manual, service record etc.

Normally, the stop light DOES go out very quickly on a healthy hydraulic system - so there's no need to worry!

Sounds like theres a problem somewhere, I doubt that its normal practice to use block repairing goo unless theyre trying to seal a leak somewhere, did the same garage do the work?

There is no choke on a diesel for idle mix.
Instead you have the coldstart device which slightly offsets the injection timing at cold idle. This is the rather clumpsy cylindric device in thermostat housing with a bowden cable connecting to the roto pump.

It runs very well whilst driving.
Is there an ajustment on the roto pump just for tickover to weaken the mixture as in a petrol engine?

You will need to 'crack' (loosen) the rears (the ones on each suspension strut) with the system pressurised and the suspension on the highest setting. Obviously with something to prevent the car dropping on your head. If you try to do it with the system depresurised you run the risk of twisting the while suspension strut round and snapping the...

Sounds about right, would be easiest with complete rear of car securely supported, not just at one side.
Only tip I can think of for this job would be to WD40 both ends of the old pipe, then cut through old pipe with side cutters at either end where the nut is, you will then be able to hammer on an 8mm 1/4 drive socket (must be the type with...

Hi retic -
What's the mileage of this Xantia ? - as that would be a pointer to any clutch problems.
Bouncing suspension is a pointer to near-flat spheres.
The reluctance of height change on rear suspension is likely to be a missing (broken) plastic link to the HC - or might just have unhooked one end.
LHM level seems fine - the float is quite easy...

Get your yellow pages out and look for a Bosch electronic factors. Had the MAP sensor fail on my Xsara VTR and Citroen quoted me in the 100's for a new part but Bosch who made the part were charging only £65 inc vat. Other then that try to remove it and give it a clean. Not sure how they are on Xantia's but on the Xsara they were a unit about the...

I think I've got a dodgy MAP sensor on my '98 Xantia 1.8 16v. The engine runs fine, but every now and then it will just lose all power for a few seconds and then kick back in again.

There are only two ways;
1) Fit new bearings;
2) Press the old ones out and reuse them.
It is possible to press them out but there is a better than average chance the bearings will be fcuked by removal.
When I replaced my drums I bought bearings as well simply because I couldn't be bothered to risk finding out that the old bearings were knackered...

You need a new alternator belt.
Try remove the belt and run the engine shortly w/o alternator - to trace any other cause for the squeeling.

If the sender makes the gauge drop noticeable after just a few miles - then I'd suspect the sender unit.
The sender unit should be the same from a 1.4 petrol - can't see why these should be different for different fuel types.

Our R reg ZX1.9TD fuelsender is giving false readings. When the tank is filled to the brim it shows full for a few miles and then drops down to 3/4 mark.
Whats the best test for this?
If needed I have a K reg 1.4 petrol ZX which I assume has the same fuelsender in the tank?????????

It's a common problem on the bx I'm afraid. The struts are showing their age and have worn. The only proper solution is to rebuild or replace with new (or known good used) units. Some people claim to have extended the life of the struts by squirting LHM down the inspection hole but it did not work on my car. If its only just started you have some...

i think these cracks are normal on the xud and doubt that they would effect your cooling system. i think they are trying to milk more money out of you. Dave burns will know more about this than me.

Have just had the word from the engineers pressure testing my ZX1.9D head, who say that there are cracks in one or more of the pre-combustion chambers, and it was this that was causing my cooling system to be pressurised.

Normally I'd say accumulator sphere and if thats ok then the non-return valve on the regulator needs re-seating. (I'm sure instructions are given somewhere for this operation.)
The normal behaviour on full heeight has me baffled. My initial reaction is height controllers or struts and I think it must be the height controller as the front struts...

I read this years ago. All thats needed is to pull the clips off at either side of the filter. Then replace the new filter. There is no bleeding required.

to kid the management system into thinking the engine is running cooler than it is

No it wont have an ECU at that age, plus the ECU model has three electrical connetions to the injection pump, these being the immobiliser (black), electronic timing control (brown) and throttle lever position potentiometer (blue).
The bit you are looking at sounds like the ABS unit.

The new (to me) Xantia VSX TD doesn't have the fast idle cable i'm used to, but the pump (Bosch, I think) has 2 electrical connections. ONe will be the shut-off solenoid; is the other one the ECU'able bit? There's a ECU-looking thing behind the engine bay relays (under the cover) - is this it?
