Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

It may be worth removing the 'up-down' button on the door in question and seeing if it then unlocks OK with the plip.
I have found that if the button is not fitted low enough on the rod then when the solenoid trys to push the button up, it reaches the top of its travel just that bit too early and prevents the door unlocking.

Is it possible to pull that rod out without braking it? I dont see a spring on that rod. The rod goes to a bigger hole (to the engine) and dissapears.

It's the pump pressure bursting the pipe !
- which means the pump is doing what it's supposed to do : supplying pressure.
It's capable to deliver pressure in excess of 5000psi - if you can turn it !
The pump has absolutely NO pressure regulation itself - it supplies whatever pressure it can - in your case it means the pump is in...

Personally I find that an old Robinsons squash bottle fits quite well.
If no luck there, then fill the system with as much coolant as possible and heat the engine up with the radiator cap off. When the coolant starts to expand replace the cap, allow the engine to run for maybe 5 more minutes causing pressure within the system.

My 96 2.0i Xantia estate won't do the aerobics properly. It rises to the full height from the normal setting and down to the lowest setting ok from there. If you then go back to the high setting the front goes up but the back stays down at the low point. Returning to the normal setting sends everything back to normal again ie the front goes down...

I used a length of 75mm square timber long enough to reach all the way across the back of the car.Place this under the chassis rail that the towing eye is fastened to then place a trolley jack in the centre and jack up.Use axle stands or bricks slightly forward of the rear wheels and slowly lower the car onto them to take the weight.

Reading the thread on the primer pump leads me to ask if there is a valve in the rear screen washer line for the 97 Xantia Estate.
Mine seems to allow the fluid to drain back to the tank and I have to hold the pump switched on for say 30 seconds before any fluid emerges.
Sweeping a dry (but dirty) screen cannot be good for the wiper blade.

Just a quicky, your car at present has 5.5 rims and the ones with 205 section tyres have 6 rims. Its usually Ok to go up a size of tyre on the same rim.....maybe you should source the wider wheels???

I dont trust the light, especially since as the car gets older the light seems to go out quicker!
I believe that the light stays on for a period partly determined by how cold the engine bay temperature is!

Thanks for the tip, Paranoid.
I have to agree about the latest Hayne's manuals. They seem to have lost the plot, with minimal diagnostic information. The book I have for my BX is better than the Xantia one. There seems to be a drift towards the if it's not working, replace different bits until it is school of thought.

The tubes you refer to are not removeable, I presume you have pulled the plug leads off the top of each plus now just remove the plugs with proper socket. When refitting, they only tighten to 11 ftlb so no swinging on the end of the wrench (indeed a torque wrench is definitely advised until you get the feel of how little the plugs need to be...

Does that 2.1TD lump start no problem & runs clean a few seconds after start ?
The engine does not seem slightly dislocated in engine bay ?
Can you in fact feel/see the (stopped & cold) engine move by hard rocking it by hand - especially lower part ?

What reasons do you have for thinking that a new rack is required ? My experience is that steering racks are durable and rugged.
If a problem were to emerge in the steering train, control issues are probably with the hydraulic ram that performs power assistance function (worn seals, or stiction due to dirt/lubrication failure) ; maybe the valve...

does the TZD that you have got vented discs? If so then they are the same! Cit only did two caliper options on the BX either Bendix Normal or Bendix Vented, and none in between!

Just in the middle of taking the front struts off the grey one, but it would appear I don't have a crrectly sized deep set socket for the nut that claps the strut to the hub.
Any ideas what size this is? I've a feeling it's 16mm but would like this confirmed before I go and buy a new socket.

recently a friend of mine did a hub conversion (from four studs to five studs) on his Honda. He said I may be able to do the same to my Citroen AX (three studs to four studs). The problem is..where the hell can I get suitable wheel hubs for the AX. Are there any conversion kits for the AX in the market today ?

Seems like there's been a spate of failing thermostats and cooling fans of late. At least I know I'm not alone now :-)

It would appear that my rad fan sensor is shot...So a replacement needs to be purchased. Does anybody know at what temperature the cut in is for the standard sensor?
Can sensors with a lower cut in be purchased? Since tweaking the car I'm determined for it to remain as cool as possible, and I know in the GT Turbo world lower temp rad fan sensors...

The hand primer bulb has an arrow moulded on one end showing the direction of the fuel flow. To me, this would indicate that there is a one way valve in it.

I am still having trouble starting my Xantia and after trying many ideas from here (thanks everyone) and after a final demand from my other half I have one last chance to fix it. I have tried/changed/fixed most of the electrics, so believe I am left with a fuel problem.

It probably needs turning - the early ones were push in, but the later ones had lugs on and need a 1/4 turn - try applying a bit more force with a pair of pliers - I think they turn anti-clockwise!

I feel stupid but I can't remove the park light bulb from within the headlight assembly. I can pull off the plug easily but no matter how hard I pull on the bulb enclosure it won't come out. The book just says remove wiring plug to free the bulb holder Is there a trick to it. Can't turn it either. I don't want to break it by forcing it. Any help...

Think what you have seen is the backplate with threads is sticking.
Try wind the catch/screw out a bit - then tap on it to free the backplate. You may try one of the other doors - just to get the feeling of how it should be. The catch would clearly have marked the paint - should be easy reseating it.

My BX has a wind noise from the left rear door if I am driving and a window is lowered - more pressure in car seems to push door out from the rubber.
I have loosened door catch to see if it can be moved in or out but does not seem to move. When I push on the outside of the door it can be moved easily inwards a few millimetres.

Soudns far too low to me fella, mine sits just under 90 degrees on the gauge on the m-way. As did the last 2 ZX TD's I've owned.
Its definately fully warmed up?
Usual advise, try replacing the thermostat first.

Unless I'm being dumb (quite often) is it not all controlled by the resistor that secures to the side of the heater blower unit with 2 screws? I was not aware that the BX had a max speed relay for the blower, certainly if the fan works with a direct 12v feed then usually the fan resistor is the usual suspect. Helpfully it can absorb water and...

One of my front fog lamps is out. I checked the owners manual with regard to replacement and it says 'refer to your Citroen dealer'. Surely it cant be that difficult can it? Haven't had a chance to have a look yet but I'm hoping it's just a matter of crawling underneath the car and not a bumber removal or something as daft.

Could be a slight leak in the heater matrix, it doesn't take much water to make a lot of steam or maybe the air vent is stuck on recirculate.

Hi, I changed the coolant on my 95 Xantia 1.6i, followed the Haines manual to the letter.
My only problem is when the coolant heats up to about 75*c the windows start to steam up not only on cold days, all the time.
As far as I can tell there are no leaks as there is no coolant loss, so can anyone shed any light on this annoying problem ??

An ohm or less is about right for the primary winding (low tension). The Xantia ignition coil has the primary resistance as 0.8 ohms.
The secondary (high tension) has various resistances stated for the different manufacturers, from 7.1Kohms to 14Kohms, so 6.3Kohms sounds adequate to create a high voltage. Thing is, the windings may read okay but...

The alternative to a flat accumulator is an internal leak (ie the leakage goes back to the reservior, rather than onto the pavement, typically due to a jammed valve), but the probability is strongly that the accumulator is flat.

I'd be worried on your ZX that does not do that - does it leak LHM
It's the common rear sink problem on 1. generation hyd Cit's you have.
The reason is the rear suspension hydraulic pressure is tapped for the rear brakes circuit - through the brake master (pedal) valve.

The 2.5 TD ONLY comes with a manual box. It's torque would rip the guts out of any autoboxes that PSA have.

Does it seem that the foil retaining screw into the white plastic insert - has penetrated the tank ?
Or is it more like a crack in this area of the tank ?
In case it's the screw penetrating - then a much longer (and perhaps wider) stainless screw could be used as BOTH a foil retainer and leak plug.
Alternatives are fiddly - as then the tank area...

Guess it's supposed be a quick-fit thread insert bit there. As the bolt is still there - chances are that someone on the production line just left the bolt in frustration - as the thread bit was missing.

When the head gasket goes on these engines it is rare for oil to reach the cooling system, you could drain and flush the cooling system with washing soda flakes(plastic packets from kwik save about 50p) fill the system with the soapy stuff and run it around for a bit with the heater on then drain flush with plenty of water and refill, dont leave...

Hello.
You can remove the rear bumper easily, nothing to be wary of, apart from the plastic clips that hold it on are a bit flimsy so perhaps a new set might be needed.
The metal behind the bumper is spot welded to the boot floor etc.
Its easy enough to replace the rear bumper for the newer style done but it wouldnt match the front or arch...
