Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

They're the same basic block so there should be no problem swapping them. As you say ECU will need to be swapped and may be worth swapping as complete an engine as possible.
Some wiring plugs may need to be changed if Citroen changed them in that period, but I doubt it.
Xsara VTS engine will almost certainly fit, although there are greater...

Don't even think of running your engine until you have correctly bled the cooling system!!!!
try doing a search on this site and you'll soon see that air locks in the cooling system can prove VERY EXPENSIVE!!! (potential for warped head / knackered head gasket etc.)

My Dad found this on his Xsara HDi 90 when it was new. After 10,000 miles no such problems and it pulls like the proverbial from tick over . You just need to thrash it for a good few 000 miles to get it loosened up. Shame

It seems most stock is held at Heathrow, I think (where the mail order comes from).
I believe the Birmingham branch is also pretty well stocked, but i'm sure Jon coudl tell us the best one to pop into for a bit more than a service kit..

I visited the UK (Reading) last week and thought it would be a good time to visit the GSF stockist for some parts for my trusty BX. Nothing too esoteric - wiper and cooling fan relays, a dizzy vacuum capsule, some caliper seals and a fuel pump .............. oh, and a nice new set of pedal rubbers.

Ok so my ISO plug has been hacked off then reconnected by the perious owner, I have front speakers and wires to the rear but cannot find the cables either in the rear quater panels (its a 3 door) or in the loom under the carpet. Where do they go??

I reckon it should be possible because that engine was fitted to the 406, which is closely related to the Xantia, isn't it? I would try and arrange to see under the bonnet of a 406 2.1 (either in a dealer's or breaker's yard) and see how it all fits in.

Could be the turbo's wastegate stuck.
On my Frontera (Rodeo for you guys), i once disconected the turbo wastegate vacum hose to see how it went: no power at all.
Have they checked too all the incomeing sensors (MAp, pressure, ect)?

Are you sure the cable has snapped and does'nt just have a kink in it like mine did, which will give the same feeling, no noise of vents opening shutting etc. The cable is the multi strand type so quite strong. After removing the front, I straightened the kink with a pair of long nose pliers and it works fine now, being gentle with it, its worked...

The sliding switch which controls selection of fresh or recycled air was rather stiff, I yanked it across really hard and something inside went snap and it lost it's resistance - so now, although the switch still slides fom side, to side it does nothing.

Did the oil have a distinct burnt smell ?
If replaced timely, it should still have the wellknown red ATF colour. Could be the first oil change on this car is the cause.

Seems you need to adjust the clutch cable, to get down the pedal a bit.
The correct pedal adjustment is when you can lift the pedal from rest approx 60mm.
The adjustment is done by a simple cable nut at the gearbox.
You'll have to dig your way down through any hoses and ducts.
Since the clutch pedal feels nice & smooth, both your clutch and cable...

My newly aquired xantia clutch is biting right at the very top to the point of feeling like slipping. Is the clutch maually adjustable? The action is nice and smooth just the biting point is way wrong. What would the life expectancy of a clutch in a 97' 2litre 16v thats never towed a thing?

Your Xantia is approx 6y's old with 50Kmiles on the wheels.
That's approx the average time the spheres will last, and you begin to see all kinds of problems.
A pointer :
Have engine running idle.
Deliberately set the suspension height to lowest height possible, wait untill you feel the car settles on rubber stops.
Now open the bonnet and time the...

I belive you mean a '94 Xantia
Replacing a headgasket is by no means a minor job, but defo not as time consuming & costly as replacing the engine.
It's a common repair replacing the headgasket, and it's right : even a short term overheating causes this on modern engines.
It is in fact the cylinder head warping rather than the gasket...

My 84 Xantia 1.9D (95,000 miles and good condition) seems to have blown a head gasket after a minor overheat (coolant disappearing, bubbles in the radiator). Was going to pull it apart to have a look, but it seems to be a bigger job than it should be!
Is the head likely to be warped on this model? Is it worth the effort of repair? Do the heads...

If you've only done 5000 miles, then no, not normal, if, on the other hand, you've done 35,000 miles then yes, probably normal! What are you basing 'worn down' on - visual inspection or the wear indicator? - the latter is notoriously unreliable. If the pads are not worn evenly eg one side of the car much more than the other, then this points...

I tried semi synthetic oil in my BX TD and thought it was noisier so next time used ordinary turbo diesel oil. Its done 192,000 miles and uses a negligible quantity of the stuff.
From another recent thread air con cars have a different sump and may hold less oil. the corrct amount is to the top mark on the dipstick with the car standing on level...

After faithfully serving my XTD for the past 5 years, my brake disc is due for a replacement. After asking around, I have found these brands: Sasic, France and SBS (Scandinavian Brake System), Denmark. Not sure if Valeo, France produces brake disc for XTDs.

1) have you adjusted the rear HC links as mentioned here :

2) this points to the rear HC or linkage is stuck, and suddenly releases
3) not sure on this one, but you DO know that the suspension computer overrides your suspension setting, always selecting hard mode at speeds ?

1 set rear height, half travel method(cheers alexx)
but when i drive the car the rear suspension raises up about 40-50mm then takes ages to come back down (except if you switch off ignition then it goes to normal height)

While Tom and I were musing over a pair of BX engine bays today, he pointed out to me the little red-and-white label to the reservoir side of the underbonnet - 1.65 on a 91 TGD, 1.35 or 1.4 (can't remember) on a 92 TZD Turbo. I was able to confirm on getting home that these are the original sphere bore specs, as he suggested.

i've an activa and would encourage anyone to buy one but the fuel costs are high. Each 300 to 330 miles is another tank of gas, a cool 50 quid and its insurance group 15 so that was a bit of a shock too!
On the flip side their great fun to drive and quiet rare!

Strut seals ??
There are no strut seals on the rear. There is a dust protective rubber gaiter, which do not hold any fluid under pressure, but has a leak-off hose for the seepage leakage from the cylinder.
It may be the piston rod has dislodged, allowing the cylinder piston to shoot out, or the rod has snapped.
This can be ascertained by jacking...

It probably isn't in Haynes. Just another feature dropped from the modern volumes. If it's any help, the diesel '97 SX is 9 litres.

Sounds like it could be the CV joint. Try driving the car slowly straight ahead then at full lock both left and right, chances are that the clonk will vary according to the lock applied. You may well be able to 'feel' the clonk through the steering wheel.
If it was anti roll-bar bushes then that noise will normally be heard when travelling over...

The rusting through of the front welded joint on the rear box has been around for a few years now. The box on my 1998 2.1 Xantia had to be replaced at 30000miles. The rear box on my previous BX TZD lasted for 8 years and almost 100K. Previous 205's have lasted likewise. Since having the 2.1 box replaced, I now paint the joints from time to time...

the exhaust has just gone on my 1999 xantia hdi 110 its only gone at the weld on the front pipe this also contains the cat £230 for a new one fitted at local outlet he says that it is a common problem. does any one know if i can get a stainless steel complete exhaust in the tayside area? i am just going to get it welded up for know as it seems...

Hi Jim -
Depending on exact engine generation, it may be a simple question of locking all 3 axles with lock pins.
You can do without using this : Replacing cambelt procedure.

Closely following advice I was recently given through this site, I have just purchased a 5dr 1996 ZX 1.9D. It has 105k, cost me £700. £80 got me a 12 month MOT, I'm very pleased so far!
The only drawback was the lack of service history. I bought it from a guy who was selling on behalf of his mate who has moved to france, and hence I couldn't talk...

If you are going to tow with your Xantia, to my mind, the diesel is the one to go for. A 1.9TD would cope easily with 1100Kgs. Expect around 42 solo and 30mpg with the trailer.

Im going to eBay my ZX diesel off.
I was after a 1.9TD xant, but ive been to see a lovely 2.0 petrol dimension Xant (R plate) with only 48k and FCSH....... Im in a dilema
The Petrol Xant is cheap (£1100 with no trade in)

If you want the performance then they did the same engine in the estate but without the Activa suspension, which because of the lack of Activa bits is actually lighter . They do have hydractive which does a decent enough job for a big estate.
NB: In the UK the Activa was only available as a saloon with the 2.0 Turbo petrol engine. On the continent...

Try www.roofbox.co.uk they have advice and a range of bars and boxes.
I got a Bigmac 380 from there about a year ago. Good value for money for the size but it isn't very aerodynamic. Although the squarish shape does mean it's easier to load up. It's pretty rugged but scratched easily on my concrete garage floor.

Why use such a large pipe?
My temp gauge runs through the gap between drivers door and pillar using 4mm OD nylon pneumatic pipe and works perfectly.

I have an old 30psi pressure meter but need to run a 1cm diameter reinforced clear tube from the engine bay through the firewall to cabin. Hi Dopscribe -
At 82Kmiles it should not be necessary to replace cambelt tensioner & idle rolers or pump. But at least these should be checked carefully for any clearance/roughness in running when belt removed.
As a rule of thumb these are replaced latest at every 3.rd cambelt replacement or approx 120Kmiles.

Might be that the auto adjusters on the rear brakes have stopped working. The shoes would hsave farther to travel to touch the drums.

it takes less than 2 minutes to change the pollen filter ( im assuming thats what you are talking about).remove the screws holding on the carpet trim under the glovebox & there is a small plastic panel you remove,its either held in by 3 screws or slides to the side then it pulls down,pull the old one out & fit the new one.

Check out the MAP sensor. it usually gives problems on VW's TDI's so often than you're back to service every 3~4 days!
Try it. If you want some help on how to clean it, i can give you a hint. Check the web on how to clean MAP's (or MAF's) on VW TDI's. it all the same, hot wire method...

The alarm control unit in my ZX was playing up the other month (indicators on one side of the car staying on when you locked the car).
Gave the control unit to a mate who does lots of electronics stuff. He couldnt find a replacement relay but did manage to find one similar, but all attemts to fit it have failed. Either the alarm doesnt work or all...

Know how you feel, it happened to us couple of years ago; fortunately, we were only 50 yards down the road from home.
My local citroen dealer got a metal clip, not plastic, as a replacement. It only cost a couple of quid. B....r of a job to do though so we had the car towed in to a local garage.
