Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Depends on the car and your level of skill and resources.
Any engine out job is a big one. Head and clutch together make a lift the way to go but you'll need a crane, space, (covered in UK in June!) and money. Finding out why the gasket failed is key. You may have to budget for a new radiator and if the engine has run 150000+ then cam belt, water...

Going by the Euro seems to have escalated prices on just about anything in France & Germany.
Being in a neighbour country, I've seen prices on car spares in Germany went of into the sky and would anticipate it's not much different in France.

Hi matt,
- you have experienced a very common problem, prone to develop on any car with years of service on the roads. It's the lock mechanism that's either dry, or have disengaged in one of the small control links.
The only way to solve such a problem, is to strip the door from inside, to access the lock mechanism.
You can NOT access the lock...

Hi Paul,
Your first job is to find and correct the leak.
On most Xantia's the HP (High Pressure Hyd Pump) is located low down on engine's (at car's) RH side.
As you could drive the car with this leak, I take it you had working brakes, and thus it can NOT be a pressure line burst. My first suspect then, would be the large dia rubber hose feeding...

I just got the car from ebay and am generally very pleased. A couple of points I could do with your collective advice on though.
The ride is very bouncy - I guess this implies the spheres need doing. Stationary, the car seems to sit high at the front and low at the back if that gives any clues.
Also, on startup it takes around 15s for the stop...

Hello,
I have a Xantia 94 2.0i 8v which has suddenly decided to run and tick over very roughly. At first I though the head gasket had blown, but on further investigation it appears that a loud chuffing and clatter is comminig from the fuel injection system, mainly around the plastic box on the front of the engine.

Hi,
I have been plagued by an annoying rattling noise which was exacerbated when driving on rough roads. On smooth motorways - no problem.
THE ANSWER? brake pads worn down and loose in the caliper, I would never have believed it!!!!
I figured it out when I did a list of when and where it occurred and found that a slight application of the brakes...

Couldn't understand most of your post , but I think there was a question in there. EGR is exhaust gas recirculation - feeding exhaust gases back into engine to burn any combustible gases left, and keep the marketroids and greenies happy

The ZX wash/wipe circuit diagram is found here :

I'd say you should try run the wash/wipe in dry weather (car parked) as long as it would take the fuse to blow, when the rain pours.
I have yet to see that water would cause a fuse to blow. I think it's coincident with the fact that the wipers are running fairly constant in rainy weather.

I've got a L-Reg ZX Avantage 1.9tdi and it is misbehaving in the wet. Pretty much every time it rains the fuse blows on the wiper relay. I've had it checked out by a automotive electrician who can find nothing wrong with the wiring, but that doesn't help much when the heavens open.
It has been suggested to me it could be a fault in the wiper motor...

It looks like a diagnostic socket. If it is it will be for connecting diagnostics when there is a fault.

I bought a W plate Saxo VTR a few months ago, opened the bonnet to find a loose wire just hanging there. It is just in front of the exhast manifold, and behind the radiator. It is quite low down and green in colour.

Hi Tony -
It really is disappointing when the effortss & expenses invested in sphere change does not improve the ride.
No doubt the front suspension is responsible for this.
I suspect the problem is the front struts being dry in the cylinder slide bearing. As we know, Tom's idea from lubing the BX front struts does not apply to Xantia & XM struts,...

There are two types fitted to Saxos. To remove the pads, if you have Bendix, pull out the spring clip and tap out the square section retaining piece. Remove the anti-rattle springs and the pads can then be removed from the caliper. The other type of brakes are ATE. With those, a pin needs to be knocked out after removing a clip. ECUs dont really break very often but the wiring fatigues and gets corroded.
Your ECU can tell you what the first problem is by using a fault code reader. The light is flashing on the dash to tell you that it has stored another code in its fault code memory. I am working on some diagnostics at the moment but as they are not ready I will have to...

the drivers side floor was wet and i automatically thought that it was the heater matrix.wrong.the footoperated hand brake mechanism had been rubbing on one of the alluminium heater supply pipes and worn a minute hole in it.i can see that this job is going to be harder than replacing the matrix.does anyone have any idea how to free up the screw...

Any thoughts on a 'delayed throttle repsponse' on an '97 2.0i Xantia?
There is a distinct delay in the engine speed dropping as I lift off the throttle; additionally, the tickover speed seems to have gone up to around the 1000-1200 rate at around the same time.

first thing, brakes get very hot anyway, when you say this do you think they are to hot.
second, normaly this is a sign of one of the pads getting stuck in the sliders.
even if you use copperslip the can still get stuck, what were they like when you put the pad in.(nice and roomie or a bit tight)

I've renewed the front brake pads (Citroen originals and used copperslip) and front discs. Pistons move correctly. However, when I brake, there is a very loud squeal from the brakes, and they are very hot. Brake performance is fine. The car's covered over 120,000 miles. I thought wheel bearings, calipers? It sounds like a flow distributor problem to me. This bit splits off the steering pressure from the suspension/brake circuit. What does the suspension do? If it works ok then maybe a pair of pipes have been swapped. Either way, it will take a little diagnosing and some testing carried out.

The vertical bar over the letter codes in diagrams, means the base colour of the wire.
Plain letter codes without the bar refers to the colour of sleeves (connector housing base colour) OR the...

When reading one of these, there are often two colour codes on a wire connector, one having a horizontal bar above it, and the other without.
Is the bar meant to represent the sleeve over the end of the cable?
This would mean that the other colour is the cable itself.

Is the tripmeter/odometer playing up at the same time? If so look for a fault in the wiring/transmitter in the gearbox, if not it's an internal fault in speedo.

Unless your 2.0 8v petrol at some time has been severely overheated, I believe your headgasket is OK.
Most sure sign of a positively blown h/g, is overpressure bubbling up from coolant filler neck.
In the area of the RH engine mount, you have the cam axle oil seal, which is prone to leak at higher mileage. It's a common wear item on all...

Can anyone tell me what tools are required to change the head gasket.
Looks like some large torx bits required for engine mounts and head bolts.
Also any helpful tips to make the job run smoother would be appreciated.

Check the seal which you DID (??) replace with the accumulator sphere. I would suggest that this is perhaps rather perished, and was leaking.
Clean up the area, and monitor it over the next few days to trace the highest trace of the leak, this will then point to the source, although my money is on the original accumulator seal being perished.

Changed the accumulator spehere on my Xantia at the week end. That was soo easy
When car was up on ramps (£2 from car booty on Monday ) I noticed the unit the Hydractive sphere connects to was very wet with what I assume is LHM fluid. Should I worry?
Guess it is now time to tackle the clonking sound now.

Sounds like the front height corrector mechanism is siezed, - a good clean and lubrication will probably sort it out.
TAKE CARE that the car is properly supported before touching the linkage - Citroens can kill!

When I set my my Xantia 1.9TD suspension at highest level and then return it to normal level, the rear complies but the front remained stuck at the highest level, looks like a speedboat. My mechanic suggests to twist the steering and it does help to return the front down to normal. I have lubricated the front struts, it helped a bit at first but...

I would check that the drain pipe from the evaporator is clear if I were you. The easiest way is to get under the (well supported) car. Just below where the pollen filter is you should find a rubber pipe dangling down. Push a piece of thin plastic or wire up this and see if you get wet!

Doh...... just pulled off in the Xantia and got the sound of rushing water from the passenger side!!!!! All the carpets are dry and the inlet to the heater is clear, I thought i heard this noise a couple off nights ago but it went away after a few sharp bursts of speed, the same happened tonight after a couple of minutes it went.

Be careful! My cousins 1.5D AX had a big oil leak which I rectified last year: This was the headgasket!
A garage had already misdiagnosed it as and replaced the crank oil seal.
Is there any water loss/oil in the water/water in the oil/bad starting?

The sunroof seal pops out at the corners every now and again. Should I glue it in place with silicone or is there a recommended fix for this job. The seal is new I replaced it when I thought it was causing a water leak ( turned out to be coming in under the aerial). The old seal never popped out although this did not appear to have anything...

Try gentily jacking the rear of the car up with the engine running - this can sometimes bring them up. If not it sounds like you've either broken or moved one of the height corrector linkages - not a job I've done myself but I'm sure one of the other lads will fill you in.
As for stereo - you can get any of the current Sony CD player range and use...

I think you'll struggle to get a lot more from it - PSA struggled to meet the 155BHP themselves by all accounts!
I believe the same engine was fitted to many Peugeots - try Superchips (or similar) to see if they can do anything with it. Peugeots are more favoured by the modifiers anyway, because of the sportier image. Or else find a 167 BHP GTi6...

fair play i was considering selling my modded zx 16ver but after a 600mile round trip and a few thrashes on a 1/4mile run over the weekend she never played up once!!!
i love her ive owned this car for almost a year now and all ive had to do is service her. and obviously modify.
but i have no complaints about these cars if u can find one buy one!!

it wasnt the only 16v there! there was one on the Cituning stand, all be it a 1.8i Volcane that had an Mi16 stuck in it!
I worked alot of the show so didnt get to see too much, and i was also organising the BX 16v stand! Was soooooo much better than last year and we had a lot of really good cars there, i enjoyed the whole show a lot, even picking...

Friend of mine has had an L reg Xantia sat on his path for the last 4 months, it was running perfectly but the tax ran out and the owner didn't want it. He has now got round to wanting to move it, but it wouldn't start so he enlisted my help.
Went for a look and it wouldn't turn over - flat battery I reckoned, so stuck it on charge and went back...

A malfunctioning EGR valve will give you BETTER economy! The end plate of the compressor should NOT rotate when the A/C is OFF. The A/C is OFF when the * switch is pressed IN and the yellow lamp lights.
Check that your brakes arn't binding - the parking brake wires often rust and hod the pads on - thus converting your mileage into heat!

That sounds like air in the pump to me if it fired for a few seconds then nothing, a problem with heaters and it would hardly have fired at all, once air has got into the pump it can be a bit stubborn to get out of the high pressure cylinder depending on the orientation of the car to any slope, and where the engine has stopped in its cycle.

Lots of problems with my xantia 1.8i Petrol '96 model.
1) Foul smell coming out of the vents, even with the fan switched off. Changed the A/C pollen filter. Foul smell still present.
2) Orange light flashes for 20 seconds when the car starts. Changed oil, problem still present.
3) Car temperature always rises more than 80 degrees... usually runs...

Sounds like the usual plastic link problem. There is a plastic link in the height corrector mechanism for the rear suspension and eventually it falls off, often when the linkage gets a bit sticky.

Went up with the wife today in her Renault Megane Convertible. Met the guys from her club. Had a good day out. Nice to see some good modified cars that were not over the top. My MOT man says the tubes that come out the floor where the handbrake cables come out underneath the car should be solid and not split like they are. He wants them welded up. As far as i can see the way the adjuster runs in them they can be nothing but split to allow correct movement of adjuster? I think if i remember right my old AX GT's tubes...
