Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I've had a look at the specs on that oil and it looks suitable for a Xantia TD.
The full specs are at
What you need for a Xantia TD is a 15W/40 oil with an API rating of CD or above, and this oil satisfies both of those conditions.

Cats are downstream of the Lambda sensor so it won't muck up the management. Depending on the year though, it may be a mandatory requirement- check with a Mot station.

Your anti-sink sphere is on its way out.
The suspension height is adjusted by turning the ball clamp ring on the anti roll bars, viewed from the near side, the front roll bar rotates anti clockwise as the body is raising and rear bar rotates clockwise, turning the clamps in those same directions will reduce the height.
Be aware of the danger posed...

1994 with anti sink system.....does not drop until it starts then rear end dips slowly and after about 5-10 seconds it starts to rise again. Whether its an illusion? but it seems that the front goes slightly higher when the rear does its dropping bit.
Also the ride height has been adjusted so the car sits higher in the normal position.... it...

Sounds like the pump drive belt could be slipping, that will make a squeeling noise, it will also be worse when the alternator load is high, such as just after starting or when using headlights or heated screen.

Can anyone advice?
My 93 1.9D LX has recentlt developed a strange squealing/whining noise when turning more than 1/2 a turn in either direction.
I have tried bleeding the system but see no sign of bubbles being purged from the system.
Does it require a fluid change and if so how is that done? Or is this symptomatic of a different problem?

Odd...on mine just hold the switch for more than about a second and the one-shot function disables; then you can stop it where you want. One second = about an inch of opening (takes practice)

Does anyone know how to operate the driver's side electric window without the one touch facility? Power's going to the PCB at the front of the door, but none's going out to the window motor.
At the moment I'm taking power from the cigar lighter & using a cross over switch to change polarity & a dor bell switch to operate the window!

AFAIK all models have a low fuel warning.
But this lamp never comes on as a check with ignition on - UNLESS of course the fuel is in fact low, and then it stays on as long as ignition is on wheter engine runs or not.

Just a quickie. I have a 1996 Xantia 1.9TD LX.
When I switch the ignition on the coolant temp. gauge warning lamp lights up - going off when the engine starts. However the warning lamp on the fuel guage never lights - even with the fuel fairly low.
Anyone know if the LX spec includes a low fuel warning lamp?

again, previously posted i know but just to clear things up a bit more. i changed the accumulator lst weekend and i waw able to pin point the locations of the LHM leaks. It appears to be coming from the metal pipes that connect to the accumulator. would i be right in thinking that these are high pressure pipes?
is it a case of just changing the...

well some of you may recalli recently posted abotu an oil leak. it appears to be coming from an area behind the starter motor on my 1.9td xantia (1993). I note that there is a hose that connects the top of the block to the bottom of the block. could it be this? its either that, or where the filler ajoins the block.
please offer me some help on...

Is it a wheezing noise or is it more of a quacking noise?
The older of my two Xantias, after I changed the accumulator sphere seemed to make a quacking noise instead of the sharp metalic tick that it made before.

changed teh accumulator as this was completely shot. It doesnt click now, but i still get a kind of wheezing noise from it for the first minute or so after stating the engine. then once every 30 seconds or so. no other xantias i have heard make this noise. whats this all about?

Symptoms:
All gears are fine and don't make any excessive noises. The fifth gear however is different, I usually put it in 5th at around 80 km/h (doing around 2200rpm)and the humming (low deep sound but quite soft) starts. It only does it in 5th and stops when I press the gear lever forwards a little bit (5mm max) but then ofcourse have to let go...

Have you tried your spare key? It could simply be a knackered key transponder. failing that it could be the receiver aerial in the steering column (assuming a similar layout to the Laguna).
Other than that it does look a little bit like the imobiliser could be playing at silly beggers. I know a few twoc-ers (my job im afraid, not my social choice)...

taipan, there have been several posts about vibration coming in on Xantia at about 70/80 mph and I've just noticed it on my Mk 2 '99 at 80 - seems to be coming from the NSF wheel but not certain; I wonder could it be a design or manufacturing fault? I also wonder how many others have noticed this?

Having had the misfortune of a snapped cam on a renault laguna 1.8 - its pricy but cheaper than a rebuild or second hand engine.
Personal preference and from experience I would replace every 50k (some Fords etc even less than that). Even belts which have only covered 50k have been taken off with spits and missing teeth. - Worse one was a VW polo...

Can anyone tell me when it's best to get the cambelt changed? It was done at 60k, it's now on 108k. Can't see anything definite in the history, though it's discussed a lot. Some do it every 35k, others every 70K. Common sense tells me to get it done now, but it's a bit pricey.

I take it this is on the rear wheels? If so, the camber cannot be adjusted and the rear arm bearings will have failed. The parts are available from various sources and there are some guides on the net with pictures.
Edit: Of course, reading the subject line shows this to be rear camber

The camber on my '92 Xantia is way out. The inside shoulder of the tyres gets to the metal while the rest is still new!! Can the camber be adjusted or is it a bearing problem. If its bearings is it a big expensive job to do myself, as the car my well be off to citroen heaven.

The struts will move even if the spheres are flat so the HCs are working. New rear spheres are what you need! Read the posting in hints and tips for lubing the front struts and you'll have a magic carpet.

Now I have finaly sold the spare subaru car we had, I now have some space and time to start working on my new BX estate bought off ebay for £100. the rear suspension is rock hard no give at all, while the front suspension is fine, push down on each front corner and it pushes back to normal height after a second or two. the regulator clicks are...

The coolant level sensor works by measuring the conductivity of the coolant. If the two pins on the sensor are covered with muck or Radweld, they will see a higher resistance, convincing the electronics that the level is low and pulling on the STOP light. Pull it out and give it a clean. Then go and sell the car or buy a new radiator and matrix...

I'm still trying to solve the crap ride in my VSX (one year on). All spheres have been changed, hydraulics flushed, filters cleaned and new fluid. Even drove it 120 miles to Pleiades who said it was ok, it clearly isn't.

There's a rubber leak off pipe coming from the base of the front struts, this pushes onto a metal pipe fastened to the subframe. Trace this up to the lhm reservoir and take off the relevant pipe up there, be prepared for loads of LHM to come spewing out. If it does, then the strut is dead and needs to be replaced. Given the symptoms a severe strut...

It started with a leak from the top of the LHS front strut which left a pool of LHM on the road!(only for 2-3 seconds?) .I cleaned this up and it doesn't seem to have done it again, however since then, the click/hiss from the accumulator was about every 5-6 seconds!...

Start by checking the wheel sensors, they should read around 1kohm, it's most likely that one has gone open circuit or the connector has corroded.
Do a search as there is plenty of info on this.

get yourself a haynes manual or you may find yourself in trouble. Because the TU engine has wet liners and if you remove the head in the wrong way and move the liners then its engine rebuild time.

It does indeed sound like the outer CV joint on your driveshaft. Couuld you be a bit more specific about the leak? Is it engine area, gearbox, under the wheelarch etc?

The only fault i can find is when i pull away hard onto a roundabout or left hand curve, i get a knocking sound from the front. My brothers 1997 1.9 Xantia TD has suffered a break up of the pre-combustion chamber which has bent valve and damaged the piston.
We need a complete head and a piston or a low mileage engine.
Also can anyone tell me the compatability or differences between the engines I beleive the 1997 TD should be XUD(BTF is this correct and will an earlier head...

Im pretty sure the fans are all the same, Might be an idea to check with a friendly Citroen dealer first.

The cooling system will need to be bled to verify any problem. Check the fan switch before comdemning the head gasket.

I've just driven back from Aberdaron in North Wales and 1 mile from home steam/smoke started pouring out of the right-hand side of the bonnet, I pulled over and the engine was soaked. Had alook at it the weekend and could see that the insert was seperate to the rest of the bumper. Are you for real? Just last week, you were suggesting that an Activa with its ten spheres was no problem and now this. Try changing the dampers on a conventional car and cost in your time.
A Citroen BX gets new springs and dampers all round for about £90 and if it takes more than an hour to do then you had a lazy tea break.

One reason that makes me consider not buying Citroen again is the fact hydropneumatic suspension maintenance costs are indeed much higher than other cars with typical suspension.

Yeah mine does exactly the same, And its a right pain, Getting the wheels balanced seems to make it better for a few months but it slowly gets worse again. I to have to drive at 85 mph just for a quiet life.
I believe it might be caused by non michelin tyres that are fitted (read cheap)

Just lately, when I drive almost at exactly 70 mph my Xantia vibrates. The steering wheel shakes and the whole car seems to be in resonance.
At 65 mph and below its fine. At 75 mph and above its fine (erm..so I'm told officer). just at 70 mph I get this very uncomfortable vibration.

The pump appears to be leaking around the pipe connection nearest to the pulley. Before I take this connection apart, I'd like to know what I'm up against first. The pipe is secured with a 12mm boss into a larger union (19mm) which in turn screws into the pump body. Hydraulic fluid is leaking from around the 19mm union (or whatever it's called)....

Tbird, My Xantia Mk2 HDi has 138+ k and is going well. Lift pump under guarantee, recent small hydraulic problem & aircon minor glitch sorted via the forum, apart from that just spheres, pads & discs; Millers fully synthetic oil every 5K. Friend of mine has a Mk1 with 200K which goes well.

If you have a pre-face-lift Xantia, it could be a faulty door switch. Try disconnecting them one at a time.
If your Xantia is a face-lift, 1998 -on model, then all of those functions are controlled by the body computer, and that could be the fault.
Haynes says that it is the computer box clipped to the top of the heater blower unit. BTW, does...

Don't quote me but I belive that the 1.4 has the same engine as the 1.4 Xsara. Plug gap is 0.9mm. Sorry but brain lock has just set in so can't tell you what that is in old imperial size. Most feeler guages are now metric.

My young 1.8i 16v engine wobbles when idling. It makes the whole car wobble, including the gear knob and rear view mirror.
It did it with the OEM plugs and still does it with new set of NGK BR6EK. When you accelerate, the gear knob wobbles and power is noticebaly down until you reach 4000, when it takes off.

sounds like the ignition switch.
presumming it is the same as most cars,
it fits on the end of the barral.
get your test light and with the ignition on but not cranking test all the wires on the switch.
there should be one that does not light up your test light.
next you will need the car not to crank when you turn the key and test the wire that...

Mmmmm, this may be a different problem and not a stuck lever. When cold the engine idle speed is raised until warm then a vacuum control allows the idle lever to return to 'normal'. Also the idle speed is raised if you have air con and it's switched on.
However, and there is always a however!! It is not uncommon for the idle speed control valve...

Hi Neil,
If you're lucky, this might be a solution:
Find a friend or dealer with a working remote keyfob, climb in through the boot as usual and program your car to work with this key, to enable you to unlock the doors.
You might want to disconnect the remote receiver afterwards if you don't want to allow the person you borrowed the key from...

Er, assuming the two other pipes go to the suspension units, the third pipe must come from the antisink valve if fitted, or if not the height corrector at the REAR. The pipe from the front will go to the height corrector.

The suspension pipe that runs from front to the K splitter between the centre sphere and the off side rear wheel on the subframe, where exactly does this pipe run to at the front? Is it to the bracket on the bulkhead where four pipes come in together, if so which one? or does it go to a control valve somewhere? any help would be much appreciated....

The procedure is the same, it's just that the fronts are usually much easier to remove as they live in a much nicer environment! AFAIK, there's no need to crack them with the car running, but it won't do any harm, as the struts don't twist like the back ones.
