Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

1) You have a leaking fuel line - somewhere. Could be the fuel filter canister as well. Most likely rotten rubber fuel lines. Note that the overflow (return) rubber lines from the injectors also are suspects.
2) This is a sure symptom on a faulty fuel shut-off electrovalve - located on the diesel rotopump. But check your engine for un-usual high...

We had an owner in Scotland with a similar symptom - showed up to be a dry/dirty servo cylinder rod.
Try have a look down there if the cylinder rod surface is nice clean, shiny and greasy - like any other hydraulic ram cylinder rod.

heres some info for the 1.9d/td engines about the tacho
mines been dead for ages so heres the best info yet how to check things
the pickup lives just next to the drive shaft and terminates norm in a grey plug.
unplug it and measure the red and white wires u should get a reading of anywhere tween 60ohms and 150ohms if you get that its the head unit...

Over here in Sweden, nearly all car breakers are connected to a central database, where they lay up all the parts they have dismantled. This makes it dead easy for anyone wanting a particular part to do a search and find where the nearest located part is. I imagine there must be something similar in the UK??

Can anyone suggest why applying the footbrake when reversing sometimes causes a single, loud, thumping noise in my ZX 1.9D '96 Estate? The thump doesn't happen when braking VERY gently.

Assuming the glowplugs are all working (does it start on all 4 cylinders when cold?) this sounds just like my BX TD did before the injectors were cleaned. Mine were done by a local diesel specialist who charged about the same for doing the whole job as the injectors would have cost had I bought them myself.

I get a lot of white smoke from the exhaust of my Xantia 1.9TD; mainly at start-up and after pulling away after idling for a while. Also, the exhaust is very smelly. Track days are great but I'm not sure a Xantia is the ideal tool for the job. Instead of spending money on suspension alterations buy a cheap mini and thrash that around.

Hi, the sound is either coming from your cooling fans for the rad, OR (I don't have AC)from the condensor for the air conditioning, the noise is probably like the sound from a fridge compressor....

Sorry mate this is not normal. The plip should have one button to open and one to close. They are on a tiny curcuit board but you can by it seperate to the rest of the key. Citroen sell the whole plip (key) in kit form so you can buy just the bit you want. Have you taken to key plip apart to see if the missing piece isn't in the plip body?

Im assuming the 97 Xantia doesnt have a breaker switch then like the later ones? (a little red switch near handbrake to turn it off and on)
You could fit a manual breaker in the supply to the airbag, but personally i wouldnt recommend you do this yourself - take it to a qualified auto electrician. Its always risky messing with airbag wiring and...

Dave - the handbook for the HDi Xantia just says RP No. 9979 16 or 17 which means diddly suqat to me. I think these are just Citroen part numbers. - personally i would go with teh Bluecol, though wait and see if anyone tells you differently!
Apparently Vaelo recommend to avoid premature matrix failiure to flush the system with forte flush and fill...

have a look here, i think they are (but not 100%) - I do know the 205 alloys fit the ZX and Xsara, so im assuming they will possibly fit the Saxo. The sizes of teh Saxo wellies and the ZX are the same so its almost a certainty.

As far as I know - camber, castor and axle inclination are not adjustable. Only toe-setting is. I did have a car years ago where the upper suspension arm could be adjusted with shims on the mounting bolts.

I've managed to test-raise the ride height of my ZX by the 3 inches I need. However, now found that the camber is out - ie the tops of the wheels are further out than the bottoms.
Is there a way of making the camber adjustable on this?

Did mine on high no probs. Jack both sides up to prevent twisting the roll bar. Get the angle grinder handy.....
Damn difficult to jack both side of a Xantia up at the same time without it being on high, unless you've got a lift or pit!

A good rule of thumb is always investigating your latest path of work route.
It sounds to me as the cable has not engaged correctly in the gearbox end - as here the last work was done. But could also be on the rear of the instrument - possibly pressing in the drive dog - and slipping.

GSF want £15.50 for a pump, and £8.95 for a timing belt. 2 hours to fit, £50. Allowing for the garage putting 50% on the bits for profit and VAT, £117ish. At £300 they either don't want the job and priced it to the moon, but if they get it they will make a killing.

Oh and one more thing, the rear window demister refuses to work, the bulb is lit when not pressed, but goes out when the button is pressed. I can hear a relay clicking behind the glovebox though, any common faults to check with this?

Common link is the ignition switch
It carries all the current for the heater fan and the heated rear window and is not man enough for the job, and the contacts burn out. What you need to do is fit a relay instead. There should be enough contact left to switch the relay, though. I think if you take the lower steering column shroud off, you will...

I used silicone sealant and held the membrane in place with tape while it set. It took me a few tries but it sealed in the end.
Having sealed the tail gate I still get water inside somewhere around the seal - it pools under the plastic around the lock bar.
Do you think this is the boot seal or is it coming from the tailgate through the lock?

My latest toy, Xantia 2.0 16V 1997 with air con, has only got the N/S cooling fan working at maximum speed.
I've found the three relays behind the grill and by taking a direct feed to the relays found that no matter what I do I cannot get the O/S fan to work or to get both fans to run at half speed, so thereby deduced that the O/S fan is U/S....

My ZX TD gives me between 44 and 52 MPG depending on my driving, the HDi Xantia gives me between 35 and 50 MPG again depending on driving style and whether or not im towing my caravan.
Should just add that its usually evey 2nd tank i fill with Shell as thats the garage near the clinic, the wife fills up with sainsburys when she has the car, cant...

The cloth on all of the seats in my '97 Xantia is showing wear after 73k miles. Its the same in my Dad's Lancia, Alcantara cloth doesn't appear to be very hard wearing. The seats in my '95 Xantia don't show any wear whatsoever after 152k miles.
The driver and passenger sear aren't identical in my car, the drivers seat has lumber support adjustment...

The cloth on the wing of my Xantia drivers seat is wearing through and I was wondering if anyone had looked at swapping either the material, the seat back or the whole seat with the passenger side. It does sound very much like the headgasket i'm afraid. On a car of this age and milage is it worth repairing and keeping? I think i would be inclined to sell as it is. It cant be worth more than 150 quid or so.

Silly question but no chance of going up a size on the thread? or you could use an old style imperial thread like BSF. Nice and fine and only a few thou up. I am currently getting grief from my wife as the boot lock on her ZX has become loose and will not lock and she is currently driving around with some string around the windscreen wiper and tow bar to keep the thing down. On close inspection the lock is very loose and seems like the screws have eroded away. Difficult to explain but I'm not sure...

The 110 has an intercooler, so look for fat air hoses heading down in front of the radiator. Some cars may have a sticker on the A or B post behind the drivers door saying 90 or 110.
The 110 will always go better than a 90
