Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I have noticed recently that every so often i get a weird orange light come on at the dashboard. its one from the right control panel and looks a bit like a car with 2 wing mirrors sticking out of it. it only comes on for a second or 2 before going out again.

My deadlocking still worked when the battery`s were low.Do`es it still deadlock with the door locks?Lock the car with the key in the door,then turn the key again to dead lock it.

Or rather, doesn't any more. A while back, it stopped responding to the second plip button. This is the infra-red plip variety.
Anyone know where the ECU that controls deadlocking is to be found? Is it the same one that provides the alarm, under the passenger seat?
It also occurs ot me that the plip batteries are a little low, but still...

Silver loaded epoxy resin glue will fix your HRW - available at vast cost in small tubes. I recommend using small rubber wedges to hold the joint tight, and leave them there. I have had total success with this method.
Bad luck with the wiring - a case of cut and splice I think. Make sure you definitely find the cause of the original short, and fit...

Yesterday when I was using the rear wiper on my estate it suddenly ceased to work and stopped mid-cycle. Of course I did the usual and fiddled with the switches and it came on again intermittently but I then smelt burning and was sure I saw a wisp of smoke from the tailgate area

Having a little trouble with the trusty BX!
Changed the hydraflush with pukka LHM, and drained out the 80W90 gearbox oil, and refilled with 75/90; so now at least I can get the gears when the thing is cold - but there is a problem...
over the last month, the handbrake has had to be pulled up to the sky; and even though it holds, the first 3 clicks...

Have you checked the pipes too / from the fuel tank, where they go down the back of the engine? If you follow the pipe with the fuel bulb down, it joins with the fuel return pipe and they have some bends molded into them.
These are prone to cracking around their bends which can cause air to leak in (or diesel to leak out) of the pipes. I had one...

My 1997 xantia 1.9TD has never started well, when i got it about a year ago i replace the glow plugs for Beru ones (it had a set of dodgy bosche ones in it) which helped the usual symptoms: clouds of white smoke, firing on less than 4 cylinders, very lumpy idle, all sorted by waiting for about 20 seconds anr...

Did the clutch on Saturday, last BX TD clutch change I did was 9 years ago, and I hope that the next one is 10 years away at least.

If they are the sort where there is a ratchet that screws itself along a rod, propelled by a spring pawl, then if you have left the pawl out, it will slowly unadjust itself.
I would categorically say that it is not a good idea at all to leave bits out of a brake assembly, or not to cure all faults as found!

When replacing brake shoes and cylinders four weeks ago, I reassembled the brakes without the adjuster spring on one side.
It no longer fitted very well, and I rekoned the flimsy metal arm would fall off the adjuster rod and jam up the mechanism if I put it back on.

To avoid damaging the ABS valve block it is recommended that you open the caliper bleed nipple when pushing the piston back, so that you push the fluid out of the nipple rather than back through the ABS gubbins. Don't forget to go careful with the nipple, top up the fluid and bleed the brakes on completion!

There's only one choice of tyre for your situation, Goodyear Hydragrip. It has just superceded the Eagle Ventura, and has also just won the Autocar magazine tyre test by a huge margin. Its wet weather performance is unbeatable, and they aren't that expensive either, similar in price to a NCT5.

If you reduce tyre profile so the overall effect is the same diameter, the only change will be in speed of response to steering adjustments. A larger overall wheel size will decrease acceleration by a small amount, but would tend to reduce fuel consumption on highway runs because the engine is running at lower revs and higher throttle setting...

I think its the same as the Xantia - ie in a black plastic housing on top of the thermostat, the top is held by 4 allen bolts.

I am rather ashamed to admit that I can't find the diesel filter on my 1.9D ZX estate (1996)...After 85000 miles I feel it probably wants changing, but it isn't under the bonnet like the BX or C15, and haynes is no help at all......

1) the suspension height linkage runs under the car - simple steel rods in guiding clamps. These may well be dry - and more likely than not - the rear linkage mechanics has seized by rust.
BTW : you are sure to move the lever towards you - releasing it from the locks - before trying to move it ?
2) That would be the 3 pole thermoswitch on the side...

It couild be the ignition switch that has burnt out - unfortunately a common problem on Ph1 Xantia.
Try fiddle with the ignition key switch while you have the problem. If you then can get the blower on at short moments - you have found the problem.
If you do a search on heater blower - you'll get loads on this problem.

I have a Xantia 1.8 Dimension 1995, No a/c. Recently the heating fails intermittently. Not hot air coming out. I use different setting on the control, eg, recirculate, blow to foot, to windscreen, etc. but no joy. I waited long enough with the engine running. I can see the temp has rosed to nearly 100 degree celsius. Still no hot air :-(

Wife'sPeugeot 106 neede new discs after 15k miles: she drives and brakes gently. Since I changed them myself with parts from H######s for abouit £55 I dsrive it once a week and give it an Italian tuneup. No problems now...
Brake hard at least once a week. If you wash the car and let it dry normally the discs will corrode. If you use wheelcleaners...

Having recently had my 52 reg citroen saxo 1.1 in for its 2 year service I was amazed to be told that the front brake discs were severely corroded and was quoted £197 + vat for them to be replaced ...not covered by the warranty.
I was told this was due to my low mileage(8000 the first year and 9000 the second!!!)

On my xantia, was just cleaning around where you put the LHM in and noticed that the small rubber pipe which comes out of the end of the LHM filler cap is not connected to anything! Firstly what should it be connected to? Secondly, what are the implications of it not being connected to anything!!!

Just noticed there is a bleed nipple on the top of the hydra block at the rear, could it need bleeding?
If so is it done with engine running or not and hydra. on or off?
I say this because i've just removed the lhm and cleaned the filters and replaced with hydraurincage. Since then it's gone a bit strange ie. hard then soft etc. I have done the...

After braking and coming to a stop, after around 10 seconds the back sinks to the ground. If I'm stationary for more than say 45 seconds the back comes back up but if I have to pull away sooner the back stays on the bump stops until it raises say after 20 seconds.
Is this normal?
Is it a problem with the hydractive spheres?
Or is it the anti sink...

If the rear suspension suddenly drops and then feels ok after quite some delay - then you have a problem with the system pressure building up fast enough. This is also indicated by the 30sec's STOP light.
What happens is that the system pressure at one point (after some 30sec's) is exactly that large, that the antisink valve opens the rear...

I've never heard of them giving any trouble, even on very high milage cars - so you should be able to pick up one from a breakers.
By the way - do you know if the car is fitted with DIRAVI steering (does it automatically return to center, even when the car is standing still)?

It's not as bad as it might seem at first. what exactly have you broken? Is it the shaft on which the temperature knob turns?
Firstly, you need to establish why it broke - I suspect I know why. The heater valve which supplies the matrix is found in a rather inaccessible spot under the driver's side of the dash (on a RHD car), to the left of and...

The worst that will happen is that the fluid will spill over the top of the reservoir and make a puddle under the car.
Personally I have always checked the fluid level on my Citroens by putting the suspension on the minimum height setting, then filling the reservoir til its almost brimming full & completely ignoring the level indicator altogether!...

Hi, my 95 Xantia TD SX was a bit low on LHM so I topped it up as instructed by Haynes. Now when I check the fluid level out with the car on maximum height setting there appears to be too much fluid. Is this going to damage the system or will I be okay? It's about two weeks since I added fluid in which time I've probably done about 1000 miles.

I've got a problem with the clutch pedal mechanism, driving home from Leeds on Thursday, I heard a noise like something had snapped or broken and then the clutch pedal just went to the floor and I was stuck in 3rd gear. Called the breakdown out and he said my clutch and cable were fine but the clutch pedal mechanism has broken....

The locking fuel cap cover should open at the same time as the rest of the doors. In the worst case, you can order a new plip from Citroën (or peugeot for that matter - for some vehicles thay are cheaper - its the same as the 605 series).

Regulator, On citroens of hydraulic type decied where and when hyd pressure is required and dishes it out as needed, an accumulator 'regulator' sphere is what holds the spare pressure for the systems requirements (or if its an older car a regulator could be what controls the alternator voltage but probably not what you meant)

Anyone correct me if I am wrong but as long as a diesel does not suck water in the air inlet or get it up the exhaust they should run underwater. If you are lucky an electrical item has got wet and stopped the car. If unlucky water in engine and hydraulic lock has occurred, very bad.

But I'd say you're starting out correct
If this is your first diesel, then note that after a fuel filter service you will have to pump up (prime) the fuel system, to get the engine started and then taking in the fuel itself.
It may take surprisingly long time working on the primer bulb (up to some 50 strokes)...

Why not try an independant - recon drive shafts are very common. have a look at the online shop - you will probably be surprised at the prices - also a way of checking if the 306 bit is the same - look at the part nos.
its also possible to replace the drive shaft boot. the split stick together bits aren't recommended but others are ok if a bit...

The existing flywheel determines the clutch size, which in effect is the diameter of the friction plate.
If you want change clutch size, you must go change the flywheel first, and this then determines the clutch size.
The clutch size in turn is factory designed by the engine torque figure.

I bought a T55 from Halfrauds for about a fiver when I did the head gasket on my BX. Other than Xantia front calipers, I can't think of anywhere else it is used - although I have a dim memory that the engine mount on my mate's Xantia HDi had T55 bolts in it.

Hi All, I have just got a new ZX (p reg) but it came without the remote central locking plip(key fob). Does anyone know where a replacemnt plip can be bought. I assume the sensor it present it looks like it is. Citroen wanted £50 last time I asked a couple of years ago, so it never got done.

The circlip IS (or was... ) the adjuster. Pull back the plastic ribbed tube to take out the slack in the cable, then push the clip on to hold it in place. I expect you can get a new one without cutting too many arms off at the local dealer - otherwise down the scrappy - most Cits have been fitted like this for years.

Check teh LHM again - car on high and tap teh sensor as sometime stheya re stuck.
Check all silly stuff first - oil level, Water level.
Then clean and check sensors for heat, low oil, low water etc etc..
If still aproblem come back and we'll ahve more tips - but then maybe be serious stuff
Also - What speed were you doing? What did Temp gauge...

2 spheres in parallel equals :
double sphere volume = softer suspension
double flow restrictor area = less restriction = less damping = even VERY soft suspension (US car syndrome)
If spheres are not equal, then double means the sum of the 2 sphere specs

Stuart have you tried bleeding the brakes? The other thing to consider is that the ball bearing behind the 12mm bolt has not seated correctly. Did you by any chance undo it by several turns rather than just enough to release the pressure as this could cause it to become unseated. I know that most headunits can have their lighting replaced. Have changed the small bulbs in Philips units a couple if times and can confirm that they were the very smallest of capless types.

Sounds too loose. Under firm thumb pressure there should be around 5mm of movement on the longest stretch between pulleys.

My yellow indicator sits at the top of the sight glass all of the time. I've tried the car in each of the different height settings whilst idling. I think it sits lower when in the maximum height setting but it doesn't fall between the red rings.

As far as I know, after you've replaced the filter all you have to do is pump the prime bulb to bleed / prime the fuel system.

Today I've changed my fuel filter and used the Haynes manual to help me. When I got to the bit where I need to bleed the fuel system all was well until I needed to loosen the bleed screw located in the injection pump inlet pipe union bolt this I couldn't find.
