Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Ah, but you can't beat the sound of the old V8 3.5ltr burbling away up front. Diesel's good for all the other stuff but it wont ever completly replace the petrol engine. It's just diesels catching up with their big bothers in petrol. As for BMW have I missed something or are all the new models the ugliest cars ever to hit the modern road? Just...

The most recent BMW 2.0 Diesel engine boosts 163 bhp, but this engine will soon be obsolete and replace by an entirely new Twin-turbo version. The first model to incorporate this Twinturbo technology was the 3.0 liter of the series 5, that now has 272 bhp, 550 Nm!

Is it amberish and like a cyberman's head? If so, you have to drain the water/fuel out of the bottom of the filter unit. If the filter hasn't been replaced in a while it is worthwhile doing that too.

I don't have a Xantia but if it is like most French cars and the sidelight shines through the headlight unit there will be a pull out holder away from the central headlight connector. (couple of wires connected). You just pull it out and the bulb is exposed and ready to change. I have a link for the fuse set up if it is of any use -

Wouldn't it be better to remove the box off the engine so you can get it on the bench? On the gear boxes I've done I have always got them on the bench so as to be able to get to grips with them.

yes - sounds as though you are right. What seems to happen here is that the xantia puts a heavy load on the ignition switch contacts which eventually expire. Sometimes the contacts are adequate to pass a smaller current hence the sugestion of installing a relay but it may be that your switch is too far gone for this modification to work...

My VSX developed this known problem a while back so I trawled through this fantastic forum and settled on contacting Peter Mann for his details on how to remedy the issue. Thanks Peter for the quick reply.
I followed all the steps, first checking all earth points in the battery area (removed all, cleaned and oiled)then set about fitting the relay...

Basically how does it work?
If I unlock the car via the remote, the boot opens by pushing the button, but if I leave the car open for a few minutes, I need to use the key to open it. This is quite irritating. The manual sheds no light on this - can any of you?

Get your battery charge system checked ASAP.
With engine idle the battery pole voltage should be max 14.4Volts. Should not raise with engine (alternator) rev'ed.

Gearbox is almost certainly NOT the same. Your TD probably pulls about 26 mph in 5th - giving a maximum speed of about 110. The 16 valve probably revs to 6500 rpm but certainly does not do 169 mph. In fact a BX 16 valve is geared about 20 mph per 1000 revs and I think the 8 valve was about 22 or 23. The plain diesel Zx is about 23 mph.

i would either drill the lock cylinder out with a good drill bit or if you have accsess to one use a slide hammer,it will rip the ignition barrel out in seconds.

Basically, the ignition barrel on my ZX is stuck, and I can't get the key in more than about 3-4mm. The steering lock is on too.
I've just taken the top and bottom steering column covers off, and had a look at the barrel, but I can't get it out as I can't get the key into the lock. I also can't tell if I'm pressing the release tag in properly...

According to my computer bumf the engine is likely to have been damaged. Exposing the camshafts should tell you. I would turn engine so pistons are all away from head and turn each cam sprocket. Bent valves would be obvious.

First thing to check is the air filter.
Second check / adjust the fuelling on the bosch (?) pump, do a forum search for loads on this.
Third - watch your driving style - no full accelerator from stop, build the pedal effort gradually.
A TD hatch can get anywhere from 38 - 50mpg depending on how it's driven. I would expect your heavier estate to...

Hej Lars,
If it is like the Peugeots you would be best getting a puller to remove the drums. The Peugeot drums come away with the bearings leaving a stub axle. Just make sure the brake shoes are completely free from the drum. Long bar needed to get the hub nut off. Use new nuts on replacement.

Groaning rear end is most likely to be due to worn out rear arm bearings. Does the car become twitchy in crosswinds? Have you got negative camber / \ on the rear wheels? If so then that's your problem and it is worth fixing just for the improvement it makes.

Getting the old one off is a pig indeed. It can be a case of splitting the clip. Sometimes you can gain advantage by supporting the engine and removing the top mount. This way you can pull the engine back a bit and get down behind from above (may give you problems lining up top mount again though unless you have lots of muscle or a hoist). When...

Best thing is to clean it and have a good look. Its worth checking that the oil filter is tight (obvious I know but I've had a Purflux leak and would comment that the washers seem harder than some)
What can happen is that oil leaking onto the fron of the engine travels sideways in the air blast when the car is driven fast and gives misleading...

I went to work as per usual today, come lunchtime I niped out & when I came back I noticed a patch of wet oil on the concrete where I was parked. It was about the size of a A5 sheet of paper.
A little worried if it was from me I left the car back about a foot from the oil and went in. Half hour later I went out popped the bonnet to look through...

As well as the wiring itself it coule be one of the numerous switches in the system. The locking motor (drivers door - 5 wire motor) has them as does the door catch itself. Incidentaly the lights-on alarm does not work of these but off the door pillar switches.

Don't you undo a black plactic cover first by unscrewing? This should reveal the back of the bulb. Then remove clip.

my xantia 1.9td 1996 is having that friday feeling. im finding it harder to engage gears.its been getting steadily worse over about 3 months and had a bit of clutch judder. so i thought this was playing up with the gears but just had a nice new clutch and hey presto its still hard to get into gear.

A shot in the dark (sorry) but does your model have a rheostat to turn down the intensity of the lights? If so it could be the cause of your troubles. If you are really lucky it could just be turned off!

Lucky me, i've just been given an AX 10E, the only problem is the dashboard lights dont work, this means in the dark I can't tell if i'm doin the speed limit (yeah right), I've checked all the fuses and they seem to be ok, what else may be causing this problem?

I had same fault on my hdi xsara , seems to be common problem on the front pipe, If it goes again I may give your idea some thoaght.

Just a note to Xsara hdi owners, I needed a new front section for my exhaust which includes the cat converter, this would have been about £170 with the VAT, I decided to get a custom stainless steel section fitted instead (without cat) fitted at a place called longlife exhausts in Leeds- cost £130 all in so quite a saving and the turbocharger...

Not too bad, if you mean the outer ones, and if your BX is not one with the one-piece shaft and CV spider.
You need to remove the hub nut, disconnect the drop-link, and take the stub axle off the bottom of the strut.
Use proper Ligarex strapping, not tie-wraps, even if these are what is supplied. It is worth dismantling and cleaning out...

John, go for a different shop or use GSF mail order. It is too great a risk putting in the wrong spec stat on the Xant. Also remember to get a new o ring seal too for it and flush the system while you have the hose off. Good time to change the antifreeze anyway. Robin

as long as you just block off or clamp the vaccum pipe & dont disconnect the electrovalve it wont bring the eml on.i dont really think it will do anything for the performance though to be honest.

Will disconnecting the EGR valve on a Xsara HDi result in the engine management light coming on? I remember quite a few rover diesel owners used to do this to give them slightly better performance.

Last month I replaced my anti roll bar drop links bought from GSF Pompey cost £10 each + vat.
It cured my front knocking.
But it has started knocking again.
I notice in the online shop 2 d/links are listed, one £10 and the other £16.50.

I've got a Xantia 1.9TD first registered May 1997 (pre-facelift). I bought the car 4 years ago at 44,000 miles. The clutch pedal biting point was very close to the top of the pedal travel (my wife hates it - she has to lift her heel off the floor when pulling away). The car has now done 145,000 miles but the biting point is about the same....

Sorry I don't know about the 405 seats, I'm guessing yes on the front ones as the 405/BX share a floorpan, but a big no on the rears I would think due to the folding arrangment on the BX.
You can count me in for those Polybushes, I'll drop by on the bx16v forum and check how you are getting on with this project. Obviously the more BX owners...

If its making unhealthy knocking, and smokes heavilly when its doing it, it could be suffering from a stuck injector.
If its just intermittent stick some injector cleaner through it and see if it changes, otherwise its time for the diesel specialist to remove the injectors clean them and check their spray patterns.
