Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Certainly BX ones are meant to be like this - its the reason you have to have pressure in the strut while you crack the sphere loose.
They go tight when supporting the car and so don't rattle in use.

I changed my rear spheres at the weekend which has improved the ride of my Xantia greatly.
When I was changing the spheres, with the car jacked up I noticed that one of the hydraulic struts seemed to have play on it, i.e. one was solid and didn't move at all, the other seemed to move up/down a couple of mm. I wasn't sure whether the ram was loose...

Hi.. I have seen these mentioned on here somewhere...and there is a link to the supplier. they could (or can) be found but they are around 350 quid for both lights. They do look good though!

I can remember seeing BXs with after market fit twin round headlights. I never found out where I could buy them from. Anybody know? It would be nice to fit twin rounds to my Xantia then I could see where I was going and not where Ive been.

Hi all. just to report that after scouring the forum for every mention of how to tackle the above, I finally did them today.. and would like to thank you all for the advice!( the biggest problem strangely enough was getting the plastic sleeves to fit inside the arms -they were very tight! ) I am sure that an auto engineer would have held his head...

Anyways - if this is the first the car does so - AFTER that mechanic has touched it - then HE is in glowing red trouble
- as he obviously do not know a very basic mechanic's job : bleeding a cooling system

My '97 Xantia had a catalyst until the exhaust needed replacing, then it got an exhaust without a catalyst (£30 + vat approx), fitting was free because I did it. The back box can be got for similar money.
The catalyst isn't really needed for the MOT and isn't that beneficial, I got roughly a 5mpg improvement after my de-cat, but I suspect my cat...

is starting to get noisy but I haven't had a look yet to see where it's going. It's a 1.9td 1998, I assume it'll have a cat so that means £547 for complete system from National. GSF works out at £270 !
so looks like a diy job or maybe pay a local garage to fit it.
I notice a part N21554 Catalyst Repair Pipe for £14.75, does this replace the cat ?...

Check carefully before you part with £££, they usually go right on the joint and its a toss up whether you need a back box or the pipe (generally the last half inch of pipe)

Everyone seems put off transplanting HDIs by the electrical complications involved, I suppose if you had the donor vehicle and recipient side by side and plenty of time anything is possible.

There are different types of fuel filters fitted. Some are held by a screw in each of the four corners; others screw off with a half turn of the top, whilst others need the pipes disconnected and the rim screwed off, rather like a Kilner jar.

Does it have the digital climate control ?, if so, it is likely the sensor has failed, it appeared to be just a standard bead type thermistor to me when i took my one apart, it sits right on top of a tiny fan in the roof console,
Temporarily, the only thing you could do is to regulate the temperature by the fan speed control, if you get too much...

Valeting products bring it up nice, WD40 lasts a bit longer, but several coats of wax works a treat, at least it did on my old rover

Being someone who washes and polishes on a regular basis {weekly,if poss} does irritate me that however much I 'Back to Black' the plastic trim on my Citroens some parts fade back to grey within minutes......is there anything that has a long lasting effect? I have the same problem with my R reg ZX. Press the keyfob button for remote locking, the indicators stay on. can sometimes take 10 frustrating minutes tocompletely unlock or disarm the alarm and cacel the indicators.
Have now taken the fob off my keyring so locking manually sans alarm until i can find a fix.

My ZX has developed an intermittent fault with its central locking. When it's armed with the plip the light on the dash stays on (doesn't flash) and the external lights fail to flash. In itself this is no problem, however after a couple of days the battery is drained.

My 1997 Xantia 1.9 TD SX has started to behave a little oddly......more so than our beloved Xantias usually do anyway!
When driving at more than 30mph (ish), the rev needle drops down to zero for a few seconds, then picks back up again.
Anyone else had this problem?

Greg for what it's worth I had no end of this kind of trouble with my Xsara VTR. The only plugs that seemed to be any good were Bosch super 4's. The running at tick over is far smoother with these plugs that with any of the orther names you mentioned. You may find that the stepper motor is kapput. This too can be affected by oil residue build up...

I removed the MAP sensor Sat morning and cleaned it out. On Sunday, I refitted the sensor, along with new Potentiometer. I found that the breather system from cyl. head was blocked up, so cleaned all that out. New manual mirror comes complete with cables and the 'control box' that fits on the inside of the door. To change you need to remove the door trim panel, the alarm sensor cover panel, and then the mirror. Feed the new cables in and screw it all down. Took me a couple of hours to change one on my previous Xantia.

I have a xantia and the manuel mirrors do not adjust as the cables are not attached to anything behind the door facia.
Do the cables come seperatly from the mirror or does it come a a kit.
Whichever way how do you replace the existing cable, and set up the mirror so it works with the adjuster.

Modi, some Xantia have a key operated switch under the bonnet for the alarm. Passenger side up against the bulkhead or below the battery tray I understand.
As for battery replacement, the best you can afford really. 3 year warranty batteries can be a good buy.
There is an occasional fault with some of the diesels in that the negative lead which...

My old Audi A4 Avant TDI (00) had quite a small but very effective intercooler - hidden down by the inner LH wheel arch, so I'm not so sure that just plain volume is the deciding characteristic . . .

Does it always happen or only occasionally? If the car is driven at a sedate pace around town with lots of idling in queues, traffic lights, etc, then there's inevitably a build up of unburnt fuel which can then produce the big cloud of smoke you describe. Is yours cable or electric speedo set-up?
Did both tacho and speedo go at same time?
I had this problem for some time and it seems to be a common one. If it’s electric, it’s usually (not exclusively) one of two things - speedo unit itself, as was mine, or gearbox sender unit.

ever since i have had my xantia 1.9 diesel the speedo hasnt worked. It starts on zero then when i start it up it stays on 50mph. also the rev counter acts in a similar way.

Can anybody tell me if the interia light on the roof just behind the rear seats in a estate should come on with the other 2 on the door pillers?Theres a on/off switch on it,but it only comes on when you open the tailgate.At night,its much brighter in the rear with this light on as well as the other 2.

Which system have you got? Does the key fob have a small IR transmitter, a little window near the key pin/hinge? If not then it uses a radio frequency and there is no visible sensor as in the IR unit. I understand the alarm/locking 'brain' to be near the gearlever in the housing close to the immobilisor unit with these systems. R

Bring it to me,i`ll change the bulbs! Just replaced both headlamp & sidelight bulbs before xmas.5 mins to do the whole lot .
Although when i got the car i lost just about everything you can lose trying to change drivers side bulb.And yes,i have a/c.
Try a breakers for the clip.A quick look around should find one for free .

Just spend 3 hours changing the sidelight on the driver’s side. Ok the passenger side takes 5 mins max, the driver’s side well how stupid to whack the dryer bottle (or whatever it is) smack bang in the middle of the way.
Even with the dryer slightly out of the away still no room, takes 30mins to scrap my fingers and then have the light out.

the thermostat is there so that your car can a) run at a nice temperature for the engine and b) so you can have warm air in the cabin.....basically all the thermostat does is restict coolant flow (when cold) to just round the engine and heater matrix....as the temperature rises to around 80 degrees the thermostat opens and the hot water can run...

Silly as this eems I think it's like the ZX and hidden behind the interior light (front one). Same on the Reno Megane Convertable. Try looking for a zx diagram. They are the same car after all.

Diesels run on the principal of suurplus air and therefore run as fast as the available fuel permits.
This means that at idle your car will burn all the fuel available. More fuel - runs faster . . .
If it smells or smokes its an indication that the fuel isn't atomising properly or (and unlikely unless its been tinkered with) the timing is...

I've got a 96 AX 1.5 Diesel. When you start it, there is quite a bit of black smoke that comes out the exhaust. Also if you leave it running you can smell the diesel from it. I think it's overfueling. Is there anyway to adjust/test/check whether it is?

Known issues
Rear Wheels leaning in at top...rear axle wear
Head gasket/cooling system problems..blocked radiators on TD models look for signs of rusty water under bonnet. pressurisation of cooling system means Head gasket needs replacement
Heater matrix is a PITA to replace, check operation and for dry mats inside/strange smells...

Hmmmph, well I told you to edit your post, but here goes... We put a new thermoswitch in (have I made you look silly?!?).... Ok, maybe a bit more complicated:- replaced the 3 pin thermoswitch for a 2 pin one out of a xantia (or petrol zx) and rewired the plug, and it all works fine. Dont know why a 3 pin one wont work, its had 3 different ones in.

First change the following in this order.
air filter, fuel filter, oil filter and oil.
Be aware that Diesels often look worse in headlamps.
Get a friend to follow you in daylight.
37 is not that bad for a Xantia, the steps outlined should take that back to 41 or 42 which at this time of year is ok.

Acadianamite! sounds as though it will work as long as you have plenty of slop in the rubber mountings for the silencer to stop it being stressed as it thrashes about. I wonder if a flexible joint would be a good idea.
It will go very smartly but it won't 'arf drink. Good way of using the bits, though.

I believe the service manual says 36 Kmiles for LHM replacement.
But if the colouor is brownish it would certainly need a replacement. Even old LHM should be rather fresh neon green in colour. I'd say you should go for a hydracleanse cure before you fill it with LHM again : LHM fluid service

The Time/Temp display on the XM is backlit by tiny tiny filament bulb that eventually wear out. It is quite possible to replace them with a steady hand and some some small tools. You can't get the lamps from Citroën - they only want to sell you the whole display - but if you check out Maplin, Radioshack etc för the smallest 12V lamps with wire...

I am thinking of the one on the right hand side that displays the clock and trip computer. Mine has started to fade from the clock end although when in low light mode with the sidelights on it is fine.

sounds like an air bleed line has dropped off and that a look under another BX would be instructive. The LHM weep probably means that a rear strut is on the way out.

Anyone come accross this before?
I have a Zsara (2000 W)Mk1 with RF Remote locking. The Locking works fine with the key but is intermittent with the Plip. The Plip has been checked out by my local Citroen dealer as OK.(sending a signal, but is the signal corrupt? The weird thing is that the intermittent nature of the fault gets worse 12-24 hours...

Yes they should bolt straight on, providing you have at least 14 wheels. The caliper mounting is the carrier, you will need these too.

Inlet is 0.2mm, exhaust 0.4mm engine cold.
If the vales are set front/rear, they should correspond to the nearest manifold.
Your car is also unlikely to have a carb due to it's age (it must have a catalytic converter) so you'll notice you can't adjust the idle speed and mixture.
A good way to clear pipes is to hold your thumb over the end, tip...

Ok, took the rocker cover off and its full of gunk, main breather to air housing is clogged to hell. I think this may be the issue. I'm about to clear it all out and give it some fresh oil and filter but noticed the tappets seem quite loose so heres my question

Guys... the moment I start the car (XM 2.5 TD '97) I have my aircon blowing at highest speed.

If it's what I think it is. The catches that pull the window onto the seal may have streched over time. Two ways to sort, 1) replace seal with new as this will be thicker and give the catch more to pull against, 2) if you can adjust the catch tighten it up slightly. I think they ain't adjustable so go for seal change. Most good motor factors sell...
