Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

It's been a busy afternoon. Due to the BX having various engine and clutch related problems, I decided to pull the engine and gearbox. Here's work in progress, drive shafts, rad, fan and LHM gear all removed or moved ready for the lift. Took 2 hours to get this far.

40 minutes later, out and swinging!

Welcome to the forum FDV!
The strain in the starter motor- Stuck brush. 4 brush starter running on 2. Seen it before.
Water may well bubble a bit at idle. If it doesn't when revved, then probably not HG.
I'd guess that the stat is not as it should be because the heater won't work well and that'd be the cause of the mayo in the breather. The 1.9...

Hi,
Can't find the Xantia ABS Diagram however it may be more or less the same as the Late BX one in which case the pin nos are LH Front 5&23 RH Front 7&25 LH Rear 6&24 RH Rear 4 &22 Pin 1 should be earth 9 & 10 should be linked as should 19 &26, there is a diode between 20 & 27 which you could check to see if the Pin outs are the same

Sticky height corrector is likely to be a problem but!!!!!
Try the raising and lowering on level ground with the handbrake off before you draw conclusions.
A BX will lift quite sharply but due to the damping in the HC it tends to float downwards.
Each side is different. Frequently so. Friction in the rear arms? No, usually weight of driver....

The front end sticks like mad, when going from low to any other setting it jumps almost violently.
The front struts have been replaced with brand new genuine citroen ones and it still does it.

Not the same car but it can' be too different. Xsara, remove black plastic trim (carefully) un screw all 3 screws remove from car. Replace as easy. There is a topic on this forum, try a search under 'wing mirror' or simalar.

I think the C5 has used several different gearboxes in the HDI. The newer ones have 5 or 6 speeds with reverse next to 1st.

sounds like the normal ticking from the pr, sometimes they can sound rattley, if it persists search the forum for seating pr valve, the lamp flickering was hopefully air leaving the system.

Wow!, i would be really concerned about having petrol in lines that are used for braking and steering and suspension, just imagine if something went wrong and caused a fire, your insurance company would instantly invalidate your insurance and i'm sure you would be prosecuted for something that would likely end in a prison sentence for endangering...

It would appear that the front height corrector is stuck. Try moving the height lever to its lowest position which should drop the car, then move the lever back to the normal position. Do this with the engine running.
If this doesn't sort it then you will need to get under the car, be careful and make sure the car is fully supported on ramps for...

That's 30mpg, which is inbdeed poor, what sort of driving was it over though?
Poor starting can be glowplugs or air in the fuel (split in the priming bulb is a common one).
The TD does seem gutless below 2000rpm I find, its simply not fast enough to get the turbo boosting.
How's the tyre pressures, and have you checked for binding brakes?

I have just been poking round by the ecu on the driverside by the side of the water reservoir and have noticed a pipe coming off the ecu without a clip on it the clip is hanging on the pipe I have tried doing the clip up but just cant.

Twiss. Give them a ring, I'm sure they will let you know if they do Brembo's for the ZX.
Have you considered changing the rear beam for one with discs, that will sort your braking out.
I spoke to GSF today for my BX and they confirmed the cam belt tensioner kit has the tensioner and an idler but NO belt. Again if you are in doubt what to order,...

I would rather think it's due to the hydraulics - I have had the same problem a couple of times on my '93 XM TD12. The first time i cleared it by cleaning out the LHM tank, and running on Hydraincage för 5000 km. The second time, since a hydraincage cure didn't make much difference, I put some Omega 917 oil additive in the LHM. That fixed it for...

The light comes on when the car isn't running to let you know the bulb is OK. If it doesn't come on then you certainly do have a problem. I'll investigate on my own car.
Having said that every orange bulb on the dash lights up on my car all the time so it might not be the best source of information. From the brake warning lamp to the engine...

For the dash lights, check to see whether the dimmer switch is attached, if not then the lights will not illuminate.
The slow raising rear end may be due to the hydraulic system requiring a clean with Hydraflush.
With gearbox problems its always worth trying the cheap/easy option of draining the oil and replacing with new, if that doesn't sort it...

Is the dip stick twisted through 180 degrees at the bottom, just above the level markings? If not, your car has missed one of the basic mods performed by Citroën. Grip the dipstick betwen two adjustable spanners a couple of inches above the level markings and twist the flat metal through 180 degrees. This will stop the dipstick from picking up oil...

Can tell you about a straight swap. Peugeot 205XS or GT. Same engine as the AX but get the pug with the twin webers attatched and take the whole lot (manifold carbs etc) and bolt it straight on and off you go.

Loss of power steering following a cold start, that then improves, is generally recognised as being caused by a weak HP pump. What happens is that one or two of the pistons inside the pump do not move until the LHM and pump warm up. This is exactly the same problem that I had with my BX. It was cured by a recon pump.

I'm not at work until Monday.
Off the top of my head......with regards to the alternator belt tensioner(s), does the car have aircon?
The timing belt tensioners, there is the actual roller tensioner Citroen 82933 which is GSF N13182. Then the roller pulley 083013 which is GSF N13183. So I don't know where Haynes get tensioner and 2 guides from....

My HDI Berlingo does around 55mpg when commuting to work/general running around, but get it on the motorway and that figure will drop by at least 5mpg, giving some idea as the effect of 'Brick style' aerodynamics at speed.

I would have thought fuel lines and tank. Then there's the electrics. Does the petrol and diesel share the same loom? Driveshafts? engine mounts? radiator? probably other little bits that get forgot!

Apparently the rear door seals on Picasso's are a source of rattles and squeaks. Solutions include spraying a rubber lubricant over the rubber seal to sticking sellotape to the surface of the seal where the door closes onto it.

I flush them out by taking the hoses off and back flushing against the normal direction of flow. Even better is to remove the rad and flush it on the floor, you can move it about then and dislodge any muck inside. With the hoses off give the engine a flush too, but to do this you may have to remove the thermostat. Why not go mad and give the...

I believe an amendment to the test was made for BXs a number of years ago allowing more clicks, prior to that it was routine to replace brake pads before the test, unsure about the activa though, surely that part is same as regular Xantias.

Haynes mentions checking the level of and topping up gearbox oil as part of the service schedule. Oil doesn't last forever and gearboxes don't have perfect seals.
I changed the gear oil on my Xantia and it improved the gearchange no end, although it isn't marvelous when cold it is fine once its warmed up.

My car seems to be a bit reluctant to change from 1st to second when cold, so I thought about changing the gear oil to Redline synthetic, which is recommended for Mazda MX5's to improve gear change.

Why not just order one from GSF?
Not heavy so freight won't kill you and speaking from experience in Oz you should have it in 5 to 10 days.

That should be it - my 95 only had the one above the engine mount. To get it bled you need to fill with the pop bottle, then start engine and run till the fan cuts in and out a couple of times (takes AGES, prop the accelerator open to get 2000 rpm....) with the bottle still in, topping up to keep the level high (especially when the thermostat...

Have bleed nipples 1 at top of engine with 3 pipes into it by top engine mounting and another ot junction of Bulkhead Matrix.

Hi Pat. I did mine last week, if you lift the pedal up, with your other hand pull the cylinder out.I used a flat screwdriver behind the collar and gently levered it out, its just a snug fit.Regards john.

Rocker covers are prone to leaking, the water pump is on the offside so it is a possibility but would warrant further investigation

I had the same problem at the end of last year when we had some snow. The 'guru's' on this forum explained that the air-con is not designed to work at low temperatures as it is liable to ice up. Sure enough when the weather warmed up the air-con started working again. I would wait until the cold snap ends and try it again before you worry...

Personaly I'd not touch the shell stuff again. After a fiver in my Xsara I ended up changing the idel speed motor and cleaning out he MAP sensor and the engine ran as rough as a robbers dog took two complete fill ups with Sainsburys petrol befor back to normal.

Alan,
To be honest, the only person who might be able to help on the tech aspect is Wheeler, lets hope that he drops by. Assuming that this is a 1.4 Auto with the TU3JP 1.4 lump, then the actual injector is Cit 1984E0 which is GBP £90.63, and then there is the injector ramp 198535 which is £GBP £22.46.

its definitely not the LHM pump but by the sounds of it i think it may be the charcoal canister electrovale.its supposed to click.it could be confirmed if you could post a pic of it.

Hi,
What's the brown Sagem device at the very front of the engine bay, at the top, near the battery? I think it's a pump of some sort, and mine's taken to click every 1-2 seconds. (I'm 99% certain this isn't the LHM pump, but I could be wrong...)

Strictly speaking then yes you should change the seals due to the risk of damage being caused during the removal/refitting process. Also bear in mind that as this job is not generally done that often, it is seen as 'worth it' in the long run.
Personally I have replaced/not depending on circumstances + time since they were last replaced and...

Its very hard to tell which one it is especially if there is no play. Usually the knackered one will be noisier when you are leaning on it, but not always the case unfortunately! Its quite a job changing the front ones and is certainly easier to just find a good hub/steering knuckle whatever you want to call it and change it complete. One of these...

You are looking at a new ignition switch it would appear. You may be able to take the switch apart and clean the contacts (always worth a try), but if visiting a breakers be aware that there are two types. If I recall correctly, one switch is white, the other black. If you want an early (Black) one then I can help you out.
