Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Vent panels? don't they ....vent? I remeber years back when the BX was a new model that you could get a sort of clear plastic cover instead of the vent panel. This made the pillar see through from inside the car. I believe it came from Citroen dealers.

The carpet is sponge backed, great for holding and moving water about. Pick up the carpet, and it picks up the water with it, so there's no telltale puddles.

My bet all the mechanicals are a direct fit.
But then you have to mess around with all the extra's that goes with the HDI, like auxillary engine coolant heater and all the electrics.
Guess the latter will be the hardest job and might crash the whole project.
The new generation HDI diesel is a lot different from the earlier type diesel engines.

Instinctively, this does seem low.
BUT - Have a look on the Autotrader web site, and follow the link for What's it worth?
Assuming a mileage of about 60K, that suggests that book value for the trade in is a shade over £900!!!! Madness.
Sell it privately.

A friend recently went to look into getting a new Citroen, C4 or C5.... she has a Y reg Xantia 1.8i (LX) in really good condition and not a high mileage. The Citroen dealership she went to offered her a trade-in of only £1500. I told her best she coud do is tell them exactly where to to stuff it and stick with what she has.... was I right?

What your car did was perfectly normal, and a good thing.
If the fan hadn't come on, your car would have overheated and possibly damaged it's engine.
If the gauge rises into the red, and the fan hasn't started working - *that's* the time to start worrying.

Yesterday I was in some stop/start traffic for about 40 mins and was surprised a whir came on (presumably a fan) and I noticed the temp gauge had crossed the line.
Is this normal and not anything to be worried about and that Citroen have a fan to stop the engine overheating? Or should the engine get that hot anyway?

According to your description I would check first the front spheres.
I believe that if driving in bad roads 20Kmiles is enough to make the spheres lose enough gas to affect the ride.
On my Xantia, driving in so so roads, the spheres needed replacement after 35Kmiles.
Now, there is a significant difference between a flat sphere and a sphere needing...

I've done the push tests, and replaced the rear spheres but still the ride isn't what it should be, the ride is firm and occasionally seems to be bouncy as if riding on bump stops even though the ride height seems fine. There is all the body roll there that should be, which there...

Does the gauge read about right - ie about 80°C steady running?
If so, then there is a problem with either the sensor for the bitron unit, or the sensor itself. I think it's the brown on on the thermostat housing. Try unplugging it, and the fans should go to high speed.

I just bought a 96 Xantia a few weeks ago. The orange light on the temperature gauge is now on permanantly as is the red STOP light above it. The fan also does not cut out until the engine has been switched off for about 5 minutes. Can anyone please advise.

Your leak could be either inside the tank or the hose between the reservoir and the pump. Its possible that the tube inside the tank or one of the filters has become dislodged or damaged. I seem to remember on a BX various parts clip together inside the tank.

To buy a code reader to do this is going to cost somewhere in the region of £150+ buying secondhand from Ebay.
If you do a search on this forum you will find many posts listing the pins on the connector plug.
I have a code reader myself and could do it for you but location could play a part in that! Otherwise you should be able to get it done...

If I understand you correctly it is the track rod end ball joint which is causing the problem. Firstly they are not very expensive so if you damage it it can be reasily replaced.
You may be able to grip some part of the shaft with pliers, hold it still in its original place, or even hacksaw it off!

Cit Berlingo 2.0 HDi 19 months/16000 miles old.
I keep an eye on fuel consumption by filling to the shutoff each time tankful to tankful, and keep a watching eye as a tankful goes down.
Fuel consumption measured that way is typically 40mpg, best 54mpg over a single tankful.
The latest tankful has been plummeting. I did 134 miles and topped up...

Hi there.Has it got a/c?I say this as if it has,it will have a pollen filter.These need changing every 6k miles.When they get dirty/bloked with leaves etc,they can really restrict the air flow into the car.Had it a few times on mine.

Usually it suggests the alternator brushes are worn and as a result the charging current varies. Could be a bad earth tho...

Driving my 94 Xantia TD from Scotland to East Anglia on Sunday and noticed that I was getting an infrequent, intermittent flicker from the alternator warning light (Battery symbol).
It was so brief that I couldn't work out what the symbol on the light was, until I stopped and checked. It stopped flickering , for a few hours, then started again....

Most BX engines have direct acting valves (not 1.4 or 16V models), and the only way to adjust them is to take the camshaft out and change the shims underneath. time consuming and fiddly, so only recommended if they're very noisy or you've got other running problems.

Revue Technique shows exploded diagrams of 3 different variants of alternaters for ALL diesels.
(1) Bosch (smooth central section, and with external regulator)
(2) Mitsubishi Melco (ribbed central section, internal regulator)

It's an auxiliary heater. The HDi engine is so efficient it can take an age to warm the coolant up on cold days, so extra heaters were fitted to some cars.

Can anyone tell me what the pump inside the nearside wheel arch does. There is a small exhaust pipe and two heater pipes on this unit.When you stop the engine this unit continues to run for a minute slows down then stops.It sometimes steams from the pipe under the front bumper.The model is a 1999 exclusive.

The fusebox is found just to the right of the steering column, pull out the top of the sunglasses holder and all will be revealed.

Sometimes, when cold, my '99 Xantia 110 Hdi 'clicks'(once) when the accelerator pedal is pressed. This has another effect of dimming the dash lights when the 'click' happens, as if its an electrical short circuit or load.
When the car is warm, or when the ambient temperature is high, this doesn't happen.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is going...

You might as well do all 4, as the fronts will probably be as far gone as the rears, and I think you need to take them off anyway. Doing it in an evening is probably a bit optimistic... If you are time pressed, something is bound to go wrong you don't have the parts for!

Car went in for mot yesterday - Failed on upper rear rubber bushes...both sides. oh and on a sticker on the windscreeen that is within the swept area.
what ? new section not allowed any sticker within 10mm of swept. so my stick on sun visor(to stop sun blindess by rear view miror), that doesnot restrict my vision (whereas my pull down ones...

Well I've wanted a Citroen ever since I was old enough to be aware of cars {from age of 5?}, actually my first toy car was a Matchbox Citroen CX, I wasn't really aware of BX's till I was about 9 or 10 when my uncle got a brand new BX Turbo Diesel Estate in silver {H or J reg I think?}. I remember seeing my first DS when I was about 7/8, walking...

hi there, I bought the two kits for my (93 xantia)rear arms, and there was everything I needed except for the grease. ( I kept reading about shims on here, but there none when I removed the old arms.. and I just didnt worry about them when I refitted them).

Point it up a steep hill at about 50 in 5th put your foot down and enjoy!
Should pull very well indeed over 2000 revs is the answer. If you are seriously in doubt disconnect the extra fuel device supply. There should be a thin pipe leading from the intercooler to the injection pump. If you disconnect this pipe the turbo will blow as normal but...

Sounds like gas* in the brakes - gives totally different feeling to air in the brakes in a normal car.
* it's probably nitrogen, which probably means one of your spheres has ruptured and is leaking gas into the brakes.
Cost - hopefully just a couple of new spheres and bleeding the brakes - £100

My brakes have failed on my Xantia today (not nice on the M4 in rush hour). When you press the pedal normally, and hold it there, nothing happens for about 2 seconds when the brakes suddenly kick in. If you press the pedal hard the car pulls violently to the right and the wheels lock up after a couple of seconds. I think there is air in the system...

You got to remember that the early TD's had no ECU or major emission controls like cats in the exhaust slowing you down and sapping your ooomph.

its not likeley to be the turbo itself, but it might be the turbo oil return which is a simple pipe with jubilee clips, other popular oil leaks at the rear are rocker cover gasket and head gasket, the rocker one is cheap and easy the Head less so, suggest you get the thing steam cleaned and see where its starting from.

I have an oil leak at the back of my engine, its not that serious just annoying as it makes a mess on my drive. when I took for its MOT, the tester said it could be the turbo or from one of the hoses on the back of the engine. If it is the turbo, can you overhaul it yourtself or is it a specialist job??

Assume this a Mk 1 car - eg the clock and temperature sensor are separate and not part of facia? If so remove the radio, then the radio mounting, reach up the back and you should be able to pop the clock out, then you will have access to change the bulb. If you have 8 fingers, each a foot long, with 5 joints, and only pencil thick, you may be able...

Tried to start mine this morning (-5 in Brum - 18V SX Petrol) and seemed to want to go but nothing before the battery went dead.
Took the morning off, got the battery out and re-charged, loads of turn over torque, but alas there seems to be no fuel.
Reset the inertia cut-off just in case - no avail

I have spent hours this weekend replacing the rear spheres on my 94 SX TD.
I was replacing them cause the ride was 'orible' on the offside rear.
I had also noticed that on start up from cold, the rear would drop to the bump stops until I got 100yrds down the road.
I got the haynes manual, did all the necsessary with releasing pressures....

all diesels share the same HP pump. then 1.6/1.9 petrols share a pump,GTI probably the same too, then we have the 1.4s not completely sure. Other arrangements seem to be power steering or not. there should be lots of donor bit for yours.

Not too difficult!
The window's attached to the regulator by a nylon clip, which needs to be turned through 90 degrees to release it - a pair of long-nosed pliers helps here. You'll also need to remove the rubber channel from the outside of the door, as the rear track for the window is incorporated in this. Remove the glass from the outside, and...

The object of tying the calliper out of the way etc is to avoid bleeding it. You do whatever seems necessary to avoid straining the pipe.
Make sure you remove 2 screws securing the disc. Sometimes one is disguised as a wheel locating stud - it unscrews!

Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Oil & Filter Change.
Binding Brakes
Fuel Leak ( check injector leak-off pipes )
Aircon always on ?
Roof Rack ?
Mother-in-law in the boot ?
SVO will be fine. Some smell more than others.

I have just worked out that I get 32.5 miles to the gallon on my 1.9TD Xantia. 142000 miles on the clock.
Think I'll start using SVO.
I found out that I have a Bocsh fuel pump so SVO should be ok. I've had a look in the archives and think 80/20 in the winter going to 50/50 in the summer sounds about right.

sounds like the parking device inside the wiper motor is faulty.a new or second hand motor will cure it

The wipers wil not return to the park position when switched off, nor does the intermittent selection work. It's ok on normal and fast speeds and the washers work when using norm/fast but not when using wash/wipe. I'm not too well up on electrics, so can somebody advise, please? Thanks.
