Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

The TD12 head gasket was modified by Citroën in about 1992 due to a number of intial failures, the gaskets sold by Citroën after that date are metal-reinforced and are quite adequate for the job.

ive got a head should you need one and its been checked it will cost you postage. its for a non turbo 1.9 though.

Just bought 405 diesel. It's done 200k
Has been losing oil, about 1 litre every 500 miles. Definately not burning it - you can see it dripping off the block at idle. On further examination I can see bubbles of oil blowing from the head/block face at idle, obviously from oilways.
Oil not mixing with water, and vice versa - yet! Don't no much about...

Just put my Xantia in for its retest.....
It failed on a cracked windscreen, worn track-rod end, and lack of damping in the front suspension.
So, the new track-rod end took 6 hours (seized beyond belief - needed a lot of heat to get that b*****d off), got the windscreen done through my insurance, and I citaerobic-ed the pants off the car. Really...

The suspension was checked on the MOT - if not its probably a bad liar and will start rattling if there is anything wrong. LHM is realy cleanig out the reservoir (drop the car first to clear the suspension) and refilling. If you are conscientious you will bleed the old out through the brakes. You can flush it if you like - just means doing the job...

What exactly is involved in a 48,000 mile service? Filters i can do my self. The handbooks suggets checking play in suspension,hubs,ball joints,etc - this bit i'm unsure of how to do. The brakes have just been done as i had to replace the front ones 500 mile ago. It also suggests new lhm (the car is four and half years old). Don't now how to do...

So I had to go from Boston > South Oxford to get it but my latest bargin its a 1.4 Multipoint 32K clean as a whisle all by the rocker cover paint is flakey if we're being fussy. £55, with the loom & ECU the only thing its missing is the gearbox, which I can use my original.
Now my question, with my Mr2 I can look up the engine number & find...

They are an easy one to fix and very inexpensive to do, but be warned, they are an absolute @$&***&%$$@ to get access to. You have to almost remove everything from the front number plate to the fuel filler cap; it's a ridiculously large operation.
If you were to buy the eBay fans, be careful that they aren't already 3 parts worn out. If it were me...

As the pads and discs gets worn, LHM from the reservoir are filled out the caliper to take up the slack over time. This could bring in air with the LHM from other points in the system - like a slowly leaking sphere.
Also the HP pump feed hose could be leaking. As this is on the pump'as suction side, you wont see a fluid leak from here. Insted air...

I've had a MK1 non HA and a MK2 with HA and I would go for the HA.
It is a little rougher but the payoff of better handling is worth it.
Plus the HA cars have a better spec all round.
I havn't found the HA any less reliable but one of each isn't much to compare with.

Our host GSF has kindly provided a sphere table here :

You will find the sphere for all type CX Estates in this table.
Replacing the sphere can be a nightmare because of one single reason :
the locking pin in the suspension arm is seized - even completely gone - by rust.

My '92 XM has a slipping auto gearbox. I don't want to spend any more money on it, but the car is still too good to scrap. the correct way to check level is: raise suspension to the high setting,the yellow float should be between the two red lines.
alot of people get confused with the level and think its too full when the suspension is at its normal running height.

The Citroën BX owner's manual states that the yellow disc on the float should be between the two red marks, however, Haynes drawing shows the sort of Chinese hat on the top as the indicator.
I tend to trust the manufacturer, but how could Haynes get such a basic thing wrong ? Leaving...

when the garage says the clip , i take it they mean the notorious white clip/rod that joins the height corrector to the roll bar clamp?
the proper fix is to fit a new white rod/clip and new clamp/adjuster.the parts will cost around a tenner.

No big deal removing the complete strut - no reason for the icon.
It depends on how far down you have to push the strut rod for access. It may pay to remove the strut complete anyway.
The top nut may be the worst part ...
Remove the droplink and the leak-off hose.
Then loosen the clamp nut at the hub to free the strut here.
That's about it.

While changing the brake pads i looked at the plates which connect the top of the front struts to the inner wings, they are cracked about half way round
Is it an easy job
Do i just undo the nut on top of the strut, tap the rod through, unbolt the plate and refit
I've looked in the BOL and it says i have to remove the whole strut
Any advise...

in 20 years of working on citroens ive never come across metal flakes in the tank!
sounds like some component is starting to break up.
i would use hydra flush and then monitor the situation.

I've just cleaned out the tank on my XM 2.5 and I noticed a fair few metallic flakes.
Is this pointing to a sick pump? All other vital signs are OK.
Or is a small amount acceptable? I suspect that a deep clean has never been done on my tank.

Its the clock - after all if it is functioning perfectly the needle goes to zero whenever the cable stops moving - its not dependant on cable position.
With the clock off you only need to jam a screwdriver or something similar into the squared socket to enable it to be rotated to test it. The pointer should move smoothly and drop to zero on its...

Yes it is possible, if you do a search there was a thread not long ago on it, think it was a 306 hdi 90, dont know if it got any further than discussion so far though....

Knocking from the engine usually means big expensive troubles e.g. worn big end or little end bearings. Rattly engines are usually past their best.
Knocking from the suspension going over bumps on a Xantia is usually a sign of worn anti-roll drop links, rather cheaper to fix (1/2 hour labour plus £20 in parts each).

I have seen on the net people saying if its a 2.0i 8v Xantia or XM and there is knocking noise from the engine then stay away. Why is this? They all say not to get the car but fail to say why. Cause my 2.0i Xantia has like a knocking rumble noise come from the engine when going over bumpy road... just getting worried.......

If that screw is missing it won't make a lot of difference, the damper is there to make the engine smoother to drive, and to give it a bit more anti-stall.
When the fuel economy gets down to as bad as 32mpg something is seriously wrong with the car. Does it smell strongly of diesel? If so it has a fuel leak.

I just noticed that I have a screw missing, no really on my injector pump. there used to be a screw on the arm that the accelerator cable connects too, it pushed in to a sort of damper when the accelerator arm came to rest (i.e. when you took your foot of the accelerator). I don't know what this did or if it is connected to me only getting 32mpg....

I use 10/40 Halfords own brand semi synthetic(?).Have done for the last 40 k miles.Could proberly use 15/40 now,but will stick to the Halfords.I use a genuine Purflux filter,not from GSF as there isn`t a branch local to me.

Hey all, im about to change the oil on my Xantia 1.9TD. Can i just check, Citroen recommend 15W/40 for this engine right? I cant find a definate answer on this and the previous owner used 10W/40 TD oil (what halfords used to put in for him...)

Sharp rattling noise like a ball being shaken in a tin? It'll be the roll bar drop link. I think GSF do OE spec ones now - worth buying those, as the others only last about 10k. Half hour job to fit, usually with the aid of an angle grinder :-))

Hi,
Bought a Xantia 1.9TD VSX last year and all of a sudden there is a knocking noise comiong from what i think is the left front, it has just passed its mot so i cant see it being a Cv or wheel bearing..
It only happens on bumpy roads so i assume it is suspension related
Anyone got any ideas??

Bit of 3-in-1 oil on the hinges? Are the rubber stops still there? Have you a nest of mice in your tailgate? (only kidding on that last one!)
Hard to tell without hearing it, but try folding the back seats down, and sitting in the bbot while someone drives you up and down a bumpy bit of road.....

Hi all, I have a noisy tailgate, when i go over bumps and potholes (which in scotland there are plenty) there is a sqeechy noise. when i look at this in the drive i can't find out were its coming from. i had a mattress in the back taking it to the dump and it must have put some pressure on the tailgate because for the 2 days i had it in the car...

Is your height corrector intermittently sticking? Is the ride height correct?
I had poor ride on my Xantia, even though there was suspension at both ends it needed new spheres, the spheres had lost enough pressure to make the ride uncomfortable without losing all suspension. After replacing the spheres the ride is back to what it should be.

Here we go again. Noticed ride quality deteriorated over last month, particularly the rear of the car and assumed spheres (2 yrs old and 20k miles) but on pushing down both ends feel very smooth and fluid.
On a couple of occasions recently the rear of the car would not rise without setting the manual height control to high and then back...

The drive belt on my BX 19TRi is slipping and squealing. Have tightened it as much as I would think is judicious, but some squealing remains. Figure I need a new drive belt, but cannot read the size (it was probably new in 1989).

The whole lot is held in with about 6 screws, it will then pull out. It's a very common fault which I think needs a bit of brain storming to come up with a fix.

Someone {who shall remain nameless; not to mention unpopular!!} saw fit to show me how loose the glovebox lid on the BX was by violently shaking it while open........it then snapped off in their hand..grrrr!!!!!!

Out of the three, I'd go for the Total, only because it's OME. I think the Mobil might be over doing it a bit.

Newer models wont fit your dash. If you don't want to get another tape deck off eBay or a breakers, do what I did and get a fascia, and adapter lead for the make of stereo you want, you can then have a modern cd/mp3 player or whatever you want and still keep the steering wheel controls. I've got a Sony CDXR3000 cd/mp3 on mine, works and sounds...

Have you got a towbar? Citroen lead expects you to have a lighting socket with a switch in the pin for the foglight. Power for foglight is diverted to socket. No plug in socket - pin out - contact made and car foglight fed via towbar. Plug in trailer, break contact - car lights go out.

You should not have tiny air bubbles coming from the pump seals. I can understand that pipe joints and other components may act as a filter and seal against LHM (due to surface tension) and not against air and think thats probably what is happening - so where has the air come from?
If gas is coming from the pump it can only be a leak between there...

It's either running on its own engine oil (failed turbo) or the stop solenoid is on its way out. With the engine running, pull the wire off the stop solenoid, if it stops in the same non immediate way, then you've found the fault.

Thats not a rear sphere problem, its a problem with the height corrector being a bit slow and sticky. Giving it a good spray with the old WD40 (or equivilent) and wiggling the levers backwards and forwards a lot will probably help it. After its had its bath in WD40 you'll need some thicker oil to go on it since the WD40 will tend to evaporate. My...

How much is your best quote without the immobiliser? - is it worth the bother fitting it?
I think the things only cut 2 sircuits. I suppose the best 2 are the starter feed and the fuel cut off. Too bad that you could still start the thing with a well placed jump lead!

I've got one in the same state, which you can have for the cost of the postage if you think you could build one out of two? I haven't investigated the cost new from Citroen, but imagine not that expensive as they don't seem to last very long, so must be replaced frequently! Fitted Brembo dis'c on both my Xsara VTR's and my ZX TD all supplid by GSF. Fitted brembo pads. All OK. Citroen brakes ain't never going to be the best ever but the difference was noticed by the wife and I. Can't say if they were 'fast road' or not as round my way you can't get above 30 mph with out the old bill lurking.

While im out getting the engine on Wednesday I thought I'd pop into a GSF Shop and get some bits (disks & pads mainly) for the ZX.
Looking on the online shop you list Brembo Max's. So digging around on there website I founbd that the rear Max disks are vented as well as the fronts.
I assume they are sold in pairs?
Do you also do fast road pads?...
