Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

The rear arm repair kit N42358 contains all the bits you need removing - to access the bearings.
Would be false economy replacing the bearings only.
Worst part of the job is removing the inner bearing races. Exactly this has forced many a handy owner to leave the job at their dealer.
The rep. kit is listed for BX - but is the same for Xantia.

Anybody tackled this job? would it be worth just replacing just the roller bearings (not the cups) as there isn't a massive amount of lean yet.

best bet is to find a leak check all the pipes of the cooling system/radiator etc, if no crusty stuff (used to be blue crusty stuff on my old VW polo), then maybe check for oil in the water as maybe something more serious has happend?
im a bit new but thats a guess from me!

My Dad's Xantia loses a litre a week or on a long journey I think he said. There is no obvious leak apparently but it must go somewhere!

I don't think it will do any harm, but the car will not pass the MOT without the ABS working.

Slit them with a Stanley,do whatever you have to- without using excessive force or damaging anything,of course.These pipes do tend to age harden,so getting the new ones on will be far less of a challenge.Sorry,got no idea about bore diam. of the filter to pump pipe.

Get an old seat belt webbing. From the eye bolt fixing cut the belt about 2.5 foot in length.

Very special gearbox, torsten center diff and rear diff. Only made in VERY small numbers so spares are difficult. Not a particularly robust 4WD solution unfortunately, so if anyone has pretended he's on the Safari rally with it, you wouldn't want to know. Very few mechanics know anything about them, especially Citroëns own.

The difference in height between maximum is minimal, more a case of being under full pressure with no movement, then a similar height but with the chance of movement. (If that makes sense)

I have just replaced a broken roll bar clamp on the rear of my 95 Xantia estate. Having spent some time getting the ride hight correct, I have noticed that the left rear of the car sits 1.5 higher than the right! Is this normal?

Fuel pre-heater?
The 2.5 certainly has one, and is isolated as a matter of routine.
You may find that on leaving the filter body, the fuel pipes take a trip to a heat exchanger adjacent to the engine block.
This exchanger becomes porous over time and lets in air.
It's worth isolating. I suppose that you don't need something that heats your fuel...

While driving it suddenly lost power and the engine stalled. I could get it started by using lots of accelerator but it blew smoke (diesel) and would stall as soon as I took my foot of the pedal. It was also running very rough.

Don't know about rebuilding but at that power output I'd have thought you'll be affecting reliability of the old XUD. You will certainly be in (expensive) large intercooler territory.
Personally I'd have thought you would be better off starting with an HDI 110-powered Xsara, and chipping it.

You may have a moveable screw clamp - in which case loosen and move it if necessary. the pedal end is probably a nylon clip and not adjustable. The usual method is to tighten the outer sleeve at the engine end by pulling the cable back and moving the clip to another notch.
Throttle should open full when presses to the floor, not above otherwise...

My understanding of the replacement of spheres is that they are pressure tested on removal - if the pressure is acceptable then that sphere can continue to be used - however I do stand to be correced here!
I personally would feel happier with two spheres replaced at the same time with the same gas pressure not just for the balance of the car /...

The C5 has just come back from the dealer after having a rear strut replaced.
Both spheres were replaced about 2 years ago as part of a sound reducing kit, one sphere was replaced this time, but like shock absorbers and brakes, should both be done at the same time?

I don't think its particularily difficult - I seem to remember doing one on a Triumph Stag many years ago. You need to compress the spring which can be dangerous if not done properly or good clamps are not used.
I don't imagine it applies to the ZX but on the Stag it was essential to get the spring around the right way to avoid body contact....

Daughter's ZX got a no -no at the MOT for worn (seizing)front strut bearings. I see that GSF sell both the individual bearing and the complete topplate w bearing. Anybody got any experience? Seems like a simple job - or am I underestimating things that can go wrong?

The correct procedure doesn't involve setting your suspension to its highest setting or jacking the car up.
Start the engine, set suspension to lowest and wait for a while for it to go down and lose all of its suspension pressure, the stop the engine and slacken the pressure screw on the pressure regulator (don't unscrew it all the way). Remove...

You are aware that injectors on multipoint systems are driven in parallel ?
- and NOT activated in relation to ANY of the engine timings ?
Meaning you can swap the injector connections as you like.
The injector is just a tap which is held open long enough to spray out the required amount of fuel. This is done by pulsing them.

Right, so far things have been going along dandy. I have now worked out the pin out of the Multipoints two plugs that connetc it to the front enginebay harness but its on the Single Point I've hit a brick wall.
The SPI uses the same type of plug but uses coloured dashes to identifiy wires rather than wire numbers. All of the diagrams I have use...

Basil - how old is your Xantia ?
I presume this caliper is the original.
It is in fact possible for the caliper to leak back from the bore to the handbrake mechanism. But then I suspect it would be a rather heavy leak - on braking.
Try inspect the area while an assistant applies the brake PEDAL. That is the only occasion that gives pressure...

The clutch release bearing would tell you very clearly - WHEN you press the pedal.
If you have a constant whirring following the engine revs, then I suspect you could have a worn bearing in the cambelt area. Could be the waterpump or the tensioner.
You should definately investigate further the cause of the noise.

Some days ago my ZX started making a kind of whirring sound. I suspect it could be the throwout bearing. But the question is. if indeed this bearing is worn, would the sound stop by depressing the clutch?
Currently, the sound does not change with the clutch pedal deppressed.

Changing the LHM (providing you got it all back correctly) wouldn't account for your trouble. Maybe the spheres are flat. They can be flat after three years. Can you see a date on them? Have a look at your exhaust. I fitted a new rear box on mine but I needed to bend the hanger to match the original. As it was, it vibrated against the underside.

Hi Stewart,
Yes, I have a similar problem with my Garrett turbo, although not as bad as yours.It drips from the lowest inlet manifold bolt.
I have another turbo, a KKK that I have dismantled, cleaned and re assembled, ready to fit when the weather gets better.
Hoping this will be better.

No experience of Xantia's but XM glovebox has screw concealed under plate surrounding release button. I have a Xantia manual but as you say doesn't help much. There are a couple of pictures but without seeing the car, they don't help much either.

I had a leak on that same joint, after cleaning it up I used some improvised instant gasket otherwise know as bathroom silicone. I got the joint clean first so that alloy piece is pretty well glued on now.
There is no gasket in there as standard and my two parts were no longer flat so they leaked and needed a gasket, I'm confident that yours will...

I would fit new shocks and struts first if there is any doubt about their condition, and any rubber bits like the rear axle mounts you come across, it never fails to make any vehicle feel so much better, the ZX/Volcane is a pretty good handler in standard trim but after everything else is done maybe a strut brace might improve it, there are braces...

Now I know that the car is ok (touch wood) thoughts have gone back to suspension improvements.
Was going to renew dampers all round and new springs. This would obviously make a marked improvement over current, even using volcane spec as opposed to stiffer.
However as an interim improvement, thought about strutt brace.

I had a similiar prob on my Zx (with manual CL), try removing the door inners and lubing the activating rods with vaseline, this worked for me, the rod linkages had become stiff due to the original lube drying out!

My Dad had a Lancia Thema 2.0 Turbo 16v, it had an oil cooler but it wasn't very big at all, and that was on a 200hp petrol engined car. I think a small oil cooler will be all that is required, the sump tends to act as an oil cooler in any case.

the leak offs work at fairly low pressure, you just need tube that is not attacked by diesel, so clear plastic doesn't work too well as it tends to harden, and I can't remeber whether it's butyl or natural that tends to swell under the influence, the stuff that the windscreen washer pipe is made of tends to swell, I know I tried it in desparation...

no ive found that too there seem to be less and less. ive actualy started giving them a biut extra when i buy things now to help them meet there costs. some of the colsures are down to new enviromental laws being so hard to keep to.

had the same trouble with our ZX 1.9D - gasket supplied with thermostat was too thin and leaked. luckily my friendly accessory shop from whom I should have bought the thing in the first place had a stack of the right ones.
Its a common problem.

Secret is to remove the two screws hidden in the ashtray opening and then rotate gently, freeing off the side clips as you go, the trim surrounding the controls and radio.
Remove the heater sliders by undoing the screws hidden behind them and it is all easier if the radio is removed too.
The common problem with the heater sliders is bent control...

Can anyone give me any tips on taking out the heater control panel please, need to change the bulbs (how many?) and see why the recirculation slider won't move.
I have got to put a stereo adaptor in so i'll have to take the front trim off but i'm a bit stuck after that.
