Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

The easy way to get to the alternator on an Alfa is to take the sump off, you have easy access to it from underneath,

Strip the door to access the lock mechanism. Then service the lock.

Maybe i'm a little young but i seem to remember Peugeot doing a 405 MI16x4. I definatly know about the normal MI16 but can anybody recall the 4x4 version. That must have ripped the transfer box input shaft to bits in minutes!

Although I can get in through the front passenger door (ie/ left) of my XM, the central locking seems to have stopped working. The remote stopped working some years ago (duff remotes I think so use the key instead!) but I don't seem to be able to activate opening with the key either. Even from inside the car, using the passenger door, I can't...

A mate of mine had a BX he bought with an auto gearbox.
It's a nice car with low klms but the transmission has died.
Out here, BXs are still worth money and repairs are commonly rorted. The cost to repair according to the experts can be as much as A$4,500 which makes it impractical.
He decided it was a better option to fit a second hand gearbox so...

The cable is the handbrake cable which connects to the lever on the brake caliper.
The wire is most likely the brake pad wear wearning lamp circuit.
- meaning you're facing a handnbrake cable replacement.

I got a tyre changed at the local tyre place today and noticed while the tyre was off that there is a cable cut that leads to a lever on my right hand front brakes as well as an electrical wire cut. The brakes are working and the hydraulic pipe is fine but what is this cable and wire for. It is a 97 1.9 td Xantia.

Well, it's been done.
It used to show a random value between full (yes, it IS full) halfway full and empty (Complete with bleeps and flashing display) .
It certainly has been showing consistently full for the past few days. So, fingers crossed, we are free of a fibbing gauge.

According to my local dealer, there's a new bit of software just been released for the engine management computer that can be flashed in.

Forgot to mention,the upside is that after nearly 3 yrs since i changed the LHM & filters,allthe LHM that came out was still bright green.
The other thing,will i be able to run the car for 30 secs to get it on the ramps,without doing any damage to the pump?

People on here seem to mention the Bitron unit quite often. I have a similar problem with my Xsara hdi...The red Stop light comes on (with or without aircon - which works fine) & then the fan powers up at full speed. I have just posted a question about it, but don't know what the answer is yet. Do you have any ideas?

The anti-sink sphere doesn't do anything noticable most of the time.
It provides a reservoir of pressure to the rear brakes so that braking doestn't make the back of the car sink as quickly as it would if it were not there. As for suspension and ride it makes no difference, all it does really is means that the car won't sink when the engine is...

Oh dear, not good symptoms I'm afraid. At best an air lock from not bleeding the coolant properly, at worst head gasket and/or water pump issues.
It should be between 85-90, and never much over 90.

Check the camber on the rear wheels. Look at the rear of the car from a few metres behind the car. If the wheels are like this:

Hi dont know if this is any help (mine was a 2-1 diesel) but under the glove box I found a relay that was dead (bad connection)this stopped the clutch from pulling in.)It was just bundled in with the wiring harness.Sod of a job to find. Is the A/C pressure down?

Yes, your description sounds about right for flat rears, they tend to last longer than the fronts, perhaps the fronts are more recent?

The ride on my Xantia is getting quite hard now and it seems that it’s the rear spheres that have gone as the front still has lots of movement on the suspension where as the rear has virtually no travel.
Is it common for the rear spheres to go before the front? Is it ok just to change the rears or should I be doing the front ones at the same time?

Yes, you can lower the car on stands. Change the spheres then restart the engine, then you can get the car off the stands.

Twice I've done accumulator spheres from the top, both times I used a block hammer and an 18 chisel. Ideally I'd have got the chain wrench or the stilsons onto the sphere but access is near impossible top or bottom without taking the radiator out and the chisel just goes in.

The twisting technique you'll find is the method they use.
If they have a tension checker, on some models it's impossible or almost so to fit it to the belt with the engine in the car and even on the ones where it is used, the norm is for them to retest it after the tension checker has been used and if in doubt, give they it a tweak one way or the...

All three can be mixed but only give the protection of the mineral. The SAE number does little to indicate which type of oil you are using. The only thing is that synthetics normally have a wider gap between the two numbers. Mixing a 10/40 with a 15/40 will give you a 12.5/40. I go for the lower first number as the oil will only act like a 10 for...

Very difficult if the hoses have the original clips on .They are the spring type,where you need to squeeze it together with pliers or grips to release the tension,then slide it away fron the hos end.The top hose is fine,but the bottom one is a pig to get to,as the a/con pipes are in the way,& severe lack of room.Once you get the clip off,you can...

The usual problem with rev counters is a poor connection, usually where the lead from the TDC sensor joins the loom, you should find the sensor just above the gearbox where it is bolted to the engine, there is a 2 pin plug/socket arrangement, water gets in and it corrodes. You can get a converter/adapter for some radios and some models, I got one for a Kenwood for my XM. If you type the radio model and car into your search engine, you should be able to come up with something on the net

Is it an Activa or a hydractive 2?
I have a Hydractive 2 and mine was as hard as a rock when I got it. I found the spheres were blown all over the show. If however the anti sink or hydractive at the rear blows, it will make it ride like a dray.

Ok I’ve gone through the TD project cars history and it has had all the spheres changed except the front pair.
Now the car is an Activa and its sphere combination is very high pressure so does give a slightly firmer ride on some roads however the rear feels like tis on flat spheres, and the plastic clip also broke shortly after we started using...

It's probably like the ZX in which case it will be a 'mare. Easiest will be to fit a new rear subframe from a low mileage write off, or a re-con unit, but I'd have thought it would be easier to get a used one in good cond for a relatively new Xsara.

I had the same problem with mine , i put it down to bad earthing just twiddle the bulbs around a bit and they should work ok

After noticing that one of the brake lights wasn't working I bought some replacement bulbs to replace it. When I got back, both were not working (only the high level one) so replaced both bulbs. Neither still work. The other lights (reversing etc) are still ok but just nothing from the two brake lights on the bottom. Its a Xantia Estate. Any ideas...

If the strut was still in the hub carrier then it was in place, they are normally a pretty snug fit in there, add gravity and the weight of the car in normal driving it is very likeley to stay in place, if the impact was sufficient to snap the wishbone, who knows what has changed shape, hope your Bro is okay, cars can be replaced.

Have you tried imperial allen keys, one might be nearly the right size. A torx bit might well work - you can buy sets for a few quid, so worth a shot. If you have access to a welder you might be able to put the 8mm in and weld it to the bolt allowing you to extract it. Is the head accessible? The rear arm repair kit N42358 contains all the bits you need removing - to access the bearings.
Would be false economy replacing the bearings only.
Worst part of the job is removing the inner bearing races. Exactly this has forced many a handy owner to leave the job at their dealer.
The rep. kit is listed for BX - but is the same for Xantia.

best bet is to find a leak check all the pipes of the cooling system/radiator etc, if no crusty stuff (used to be blue crusty stuff on my old VW polo), then maybe check for oil in the water as maybe something more serious has happend?
im a bit new but thats a guess from me!

A while ago someone mentioned some stuff which is recommended for a leaky Xantia. You said that you could leave it in as a semi-permanent repair.
My Dad's Xantia loses a litre a week or on a long journey I think he said. There is no obvious leak apparently but it must go somewhere!

I don't think it will do any harm, but the car will not pass the MOT without the ABS working.

Slit them with a Stanley,do whatever you have to- without using excessive force or damaging anything,of course.These pipes do tend to age harden,so getting the new ones on will be far less of a challenge.Sorry,got no idea about bore diam. of the filter to pump pipe.

Very special gearbox, torsten center diff and rear diff. Only made in VERY small numbers so spares are difficult. Not a particularly robust 4WD solution unfortunately, so if anyone has pretended he's on the Safari rally with it, you wouldn't want to know. Very few mechanics know anything about them, especially Citroëns own.
