Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Your not the only one with issues on this on the wifes Activa will only let you use the sunroof if your lucky as it has jammed open a couple of times and with english weather its not worth the risk of using it!
Anyone with an understanding of these things imput would be much apresiated.

The moulded plastic fittings have release buttons. Just work out which side it is and press the side firmly and it should slip off the filter.

I reversed my Xantia today through a narrow gap between some safety fencing. Only going very slow but caught my LH (passenger side) mirror and it broke clean off. Hanging by the wire/cable.

The twin ouput hydraulic pump is only found on the Xantia. All Xantia's have the same pump, but some have different pulley sizes, the pulleys can be swapped around though.

On a 1.9TD, the cambelt covers are the most difficult bit of the job, the belt change itself is simple enough. You'll need a couple of bolts and a piece of rod to lock the shafts up.

Must be a seal there allright.
The pipe is a 6.3mm - get a pipe seal at your nearest GSF or Cit dealer for a couple of pennies.
Remember :
ALWAYS fit the LHM wetted seal on the pipe end - and THEN fit both in the pipe port.
There is a fair chance the old seal is still located - and penetrated (damaged) - in the regulator port. The seal is damaged...

I found it quicker and easier to break off the old plastic clip with a 1/2 chisel. Remove the dash clock assembly and you will see a hole in the inner bulkhead, to the rear of the pod housing where you can clearly see the top of the clutch lever. Yes my Xantia has a nut allergy too, I wish they would label veggy oil properly. Very irritating!!

You'll basically have a hydractive Xantia for no extra cost (well, at the rear). You will have to be careful as the car will be more prone to oversteering.

Personally if I was worried about the rust then I'd take the discs off and clean them off with some emery cloth and re-fit. They will probably polish up with use anyway and for MOT purposes you only need 50%G anyway (they should produce about 98% if they work properly!)

Yep, drilling is a bodge, it causes cracking. The proper way to do it is actually cast the discs with the holes in. This is the way the OE discs are done on high powered production cars such as the big Mercs, astons, ferrari etc etc

Does the banging vary with road speed, or with engine speed. Does it get faster if you rev the car in neutral?
If it's engine speed related, you have a smoking gun already - you've been on a fast run on the motorway run with very little oil in the engine...

you could always try one of those resistor things that you find people scamming on ebay, supposed to make the car run rich.
Remove the air filter and take the air in from as high as possible to prevent crap being sucked in to your engine also take as much of the interior out as you can.

It depends on your level of expertise. Dismantling is fairly straightforward until you try and get the remains of the bearings out of the arm, but if you have a welder there is an easy way. Run a line of weld around the inside of the bearing outer casing, which will be securley jammed in, when it cools the casing will shrink and you will be able...

Hi Andrew, I did my rears on the hdi (one was down to the backing and sounding lovely! The other was fine-are yours wearing uneven? I think its common) The pads I got from gsf did not have the little retaining pins, it was pads and pads alone. But that was the rears anyhow. So I have probably been of no use whatsoever! there is a linkage for the brakes on the bulkhead at the o/s,it probably needs adjusted to take the freeplay up in it,dont do it too much or the brakes will bind on.

I just purchased a nice metallic red Saxo 1.1 Desire (2000 W plate).
The brakes were poor when I got it so I took it to my local Citroen man. He changed the brake fluid, front disks and pads, and also both rear drum brake cylinders.
But, the brakes still feel spongy. Although maybe not fully bedded in yet. But I can't imagine they'll get much...

If this is an XU engine, which I believe it is, the answer is a pain in the backside as you have to remove the cambelt to get to it. If you're removing the belt, then it's worth changing it, as they are cheap, and the main pain is the labour. Sorry!

Thought it was time I put something back into this forum as it's been no end of help to me.
I started to get a rattle at low revs 1100-1700 from the aux drive belt on my Xantia. Investigation, ie., removing the belt, proved that it wasn't any bearings etc.
Got a new belt and fitted it but had a hell of a job trying to do it according to Haynes....

You should be able to find a dedicated wire complete with a plug that will fit in the rear plug arrangement in the near side rear light unit. You will then find that the car rear foglight doesn't work!
The reason is that Citroen intend you to use a special light socket that has a switch in the relevant pin which turns off the foglight when the...

I think someone has got this all rather wrong. The Oil/coolant heat exchanger is absolutely essential on a TD engine. During engine warm up it uses coolant heat to get the oil up to temperature faster than it would get there on it's own. Once up to temperature, the Exchanger keeps the oil temperature between 10 and 20 degrees hotter than the...

If the fuel regulator screw is doing its job you must be able to get the smoke down by unscrewing? it, as it should be able to cut the fuel level down to far less than you need. If you have boost pressure there must be plenty of air arriving, cant think of any other reason for black smoke than excessive fuel, unless the timing is retarded.

Thanks for your help with the bad starting on a 1.9td Pug 306 with a Bosch system. Renewed leak off pipes and problem solved. To prove this I removed the leak off pipe from the pump connection and then fitted a blanking cap on the pump connection to seal the system and tried it before buy the pipe kit. Bingo!! Started, no problems from over night...

From what I remember, the joint can't be split from the shaft to replace the boot in the traditional way, which would mean the best way is to replace the shaft.

Your BX has been checked a couple of times by your trusted mechanic - so I really doubt any safety matters has been overlooked.
I think your BX suffers from dry front strut rods in general - a very common problem which makes the struts stick and emits heavy noise.

I'd have thought your right about the interior light but only if it doesn't come on when you open the passengers door but does when you open the drivers.

Indeed Sire, your BX does indeed smoke, black. I have followed it. It did seem to go well for an N/A though. I suggest a dose of injector cleaner. It does seem like the pump has been tampered with as the yellow paint and seal seem to be missing!
I will await Mr Burns arrival as to putting it right again.

The beastie has a little problem. Under moderate to hard acceleration it produces a fair amount of black smoke. Air and fuel filters are 2000 miles old. I feel the previous owner has had a tinker and increased the fuelling to find a bit more performance as the anti-tamper seals are missing.
Question is, which way does one screw the adjuster to...

Old oil certainly wouldnt help the emissions test, especially on an old engine such as yours. They probably just changed it to be on the safe side, after all it did pass afterwards!!

I have just had my MOT done today & the car failed on the emissions @ 3.6 & I was told that it required to be 3.0 or below.
I have no problem with the figures it is the remedy that has had me thinking.

They're the same pump, you'll have to make sure that the pulley is the same but apart from that, it'll swap straight over.

Hi,
The LHM pump in a 1.8 8V Xantia is making some nasty noises, whirring noisily.
I've got access to a Xantia Diesel for parts, would the LHM pump in the diesel go into the petrol car? Any simple alterations needed if they are actually different?

I'm not sure if spares are available for the pump, you would be better off asking a Diesel fuel injection specialist. If the part you are talking about has an orange multiplug attached to it, it's the piston deactivator for that cylinder of the pump. When full fuel pressure is not needed, a one of the three (the top one) pistons is shut down to...

Hi,
The deisel pump on my xantia (2.0 HDI 90bhp) was leaking from the top cap (4 T40 star drive bolts). (Im talking about the pump located in the engine bay).
With the top cap removed, the seal was damaged, and the surface of the underside of the cap (that is pressed against the seal) was pitted although not deeply - as too was the pump side...

Well, following Tom Sheppard's excellent advise to new owners of old BXs, so far I have:
replaced oil and filters,
unblocked radiator with weak solution of hydrochloric acid,
flushed cooling system,
replaced bottom hose,
replaced coolant,
replaced radiator thermal switch,
replaced timing belt,
hydraflushed,
replaced stop solenoid,
replaced brake...

It may be due to one of the bolts securing the winder mechanism coming loose. Remove the door trim panel to gain access.

There is an intensely irritating, but not very loud, buzzy rattle from around the back of the nearside door ('97 Activa). It stops if I lower the (electric) window just a tiny bit.
I've tried stuffing bits of folded paper in various places around the window with no success.
Any suggestions?

Got my car in July 04' and at that time booked it in and had a service including the belt change. I am doing min 450 miles to 500 a week. Me and Wilkobob (and friend) are overhauling the front discs and pads and rear shoes, nearside handbrake cable (noticed that when doing the offside cable) and both drop links, and if time the bulbs on the heater...

Gear linkages are a good place to start but I'd also check gear box oil level too and perhaps change the oil regardless.

Engaging second gear on my 5 speed manual box is a tad difficult. There is no crunching, it's just stiff - enough to make you think about it when changin gear. I've only done 30,000 miles.
I'm wondering whether I need to look at the gear linkages.

Next thing would be hotter cams, an induction kit with cold feed and an exhaust. More costly things would be a gas flowed head and forced induction, probably a supercharger so you wouldn't have to mess too much with the internals.

Did you get the proper springs for the diesel as i know someone who put Pug306XSi spings on his 306D Turbo and they couldnt support the weight of the car properly and clanked over bumps.
If thats not it I would suspect droplinks, they are fairly cheap and i replaced mine when i lowered my ZX as a matter of course.
As for the rear, mine was lowered...

just lowered the front of the zx with 35mil springs.(havnt done the back yet,need a DRY WEEKEND for that. when i droped the struts they had 16v printed on them.great improvment than standard except there is a real bad clunk from the front end now when goin over bumps.(not the upward motion but the downward motion if you no what i mean).all drop...

Is the plate on the lock, that the servo moves around still properly attached to the lock body? My ZX boot lock wore badly so that eventually the plate fell off. Before it did this, it did exactly the same as yours is doing.

Has anyone had this problem the car is unlocked you go to open the boot it won,t open its acting like its locked ive had this annoying problem a few times (crawling inside the boot from the folded down seats to get the panel off inside the bootlid and flicking the linkage to open boot!) on looking at the linkage the servo motor is not...

hi anyone replaced the rear sus. height contol linkage on a xantia, mines snapped the steel rod that comes from the anti roll bar clamp and now the rear suspension is down all the time, also are parts to replace this linkage readily available? and any tips on setting height back up would be appreciated, thanks Johno

speek to GSF car parts they have got citroen specialist you tell them make and modle they will sell you corect fillter,ask for a purflux fillter as these are OE regards malcolm

I would follow the wiring loom from the engine to where it joins the main loom, not completely sure where that lives on a Xantia but it sounds like you have partly pulled a connector off, probaly when the engine jumped around on its mountings when stalled, just look around pulling and pushing connectors, one will move together I hope.

This is a vacuum capsule. The wax capsule in the thermostat housing was discontinued at some point around 1996-7 ish, and the replacement system uses vacuum to control the hot/cold fast/slow idle. The STOP light is the master caution. It's activated by one of the other warning lights.
And it means STOP to get the problem(s) sorted.
I take it you did a basic check on these warnings ?
The 3 warnings you mentions all gets activated by an earth switch in their respective sensors. Meaning you could have a general fault in the cable harness where...

I dont think the TU range goes higher than the 1.4L (1.360L that is) in displacement.
The 1.6L displacement would be an XU variant - like XU5xx.
