Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

The ZX has an enormeus power hidden in the carpets - you just have to hit the floor right !
In more popular terms I'd suggest you take a real sharp look at your accelerator cable linkage in the engine bay at the diesel pump
- was (is ? ) a common problem on BX diesels.

before trying to undo pipe just check short rubber hose above that metal pipe,as it is quite common for this to be perished and split,it will make it look like you metal pipe is leaking,if this is ok make sure there is a seal on your metal pipe regards malcolm

sounds like you just got the brakes f****g hot; try using a low gear,and slow right down next time!!

I was towing a caravan in cornwall and went down a steep hill and had to stand on the brakes most of the way down. When I got to the bottom there was smoke coming from the steering column only a little but it was smoke pretty acrid at that. Do you have a timer? My DTR Turbo does not. The most likely cause is the failure of the switches in the door hinge face. New ones cost about £1.50 from GSF and can be tested by removing one (one screw) and earthing the connection to the bodywork.
Does the lights on buzzer work? Put sidelights on and open the door -?

Wonder if anyone could help: the TZD interior lights on the B post have stopped working. They come on when you activate the switches on the lights themselves, but nothing when you open or close (or lock) the doors. I suspect the timer unit. Where abouts is it?

I came across an unusual combination a while back - an 88/89-ish BX 19RD estate that had been given a replacement engine a couple of years later. Despite the fact that there was no rev counter in the car, it had a tacho sensor fitted, as it was standard by that time on just about all UK models.

Having problems with an intermittent reading on the rev counter.
Checked and cleaned external plug connections, no change.

1.Does any one know what the resistance should be on a working sensor?.
2.Has any one used a RPM sensor on diesels, not fitted with a RPM gauge?.

If you set your suspension to its highest setting (with the engine running), the float should float and register a level, at all other suspensionn heights it just records too high a level. I've had a float sticking, but I think some of the others on here have had on BXs and suchlike.

Is it the seatbelt warning light - or side air bag warning lamp? The former (if fitted - and my 2000 90HDi never had one) is usually a dodgey contact in the drivers seat belt clip point - try spraying and cleaning the contactc with a propriatory cleaner.

Shoot me down here but I'd be tempted to remove the engine and box then change the subframe, due to the amount of pipe work around the subframe. It will give you more space to do the swap and will make sure nothing is trapped or damaged in the operation. I suppose it can be done with the power plant in situ but my choice would be to create more...

Foglights don't really need adjusting as they dont have a directional beam, they should throw out a semi circle of light low down in front of the car.. .

On my BX they screw back, but as my car is about 3 generations behind your car, that may not be a lot of help. If the pistons are circular, with a raised circumference with 4 square-edged indents in it, then getting a file, flat-bladed screwdriver or similar into them and turning will screw them back in. The engine revs will dip when the fans come on because there is a load coming on BUT an S reg onwards Xsara should have the electronically controlled idle and the idle speed should go up to fast idle when the aircon comes on.
My Xantia is low on gas, when you turn the aircon on the radiator fans come on (slow speed) but the compressor doesn't...

Friend of mine has a S plate Xara TD with aircon. The fans work fine, as does the aircon (revs dip) but there is nothing coming out of any of the vents.
I have taken apart the control gear & everything seems to be ok.
There is a small motor at the base of the dashboard, I'm wondering if its that.

If these products were any good then they would have been endorsed by independant testing, such as FBHVC. The products produced by reputable companies as Millers and Castrol are.

id say change the power steering fluid, and see what happens, see if there are metalic particles in the fluid reservoir, if there is a significant ammount, id say the pump is on its way. I know chaning the fluid can make steering a hell of a lot lighter (or at least has done in a few cases in my experience). If after this there is no differenct,...

The ZX power steering is making a horrible noise, and the steering feels heavy at low speeds. The noise is similar to the one you would normally get at full lock, but it's apparent at low speeds and small movements in the steering. Plus slightly noisier!
Tyres are in good condition and there is plenty of steering fluid in the reservoir.

I have a dead ZX TD engine I'm going to rebuild. The engine in the car is fine and doesn't need replacing so once the engine is rebuilt I would like to bench test it instead of putting it back in the car. If its like BX and ZX there is a steel cover on the nearside end of the gearbox and one of the securing bolts is in fact a combined filler and level plug. - its larger and the cover curves around it.
Make sure you use the correct oil otherwise your gearchanges may deteriorate.

How do you slacken off the alternator belt on a zx 1.4i with power steering (alt at back of engine)?? the haynes manual says to slacken off the upper and lower bolts then adjust the tensioning bolt, but can i find the correct ones! can i hell!

i have just bought a 1998 xantia activa 2.0 and i have a few niggles,
the wipers only work on low speed, looking around the fuse box i cant find the blue relay or an empty socket but i have got two black relays that seem to control the wipers (ie the wipers stop if i pull one or the other out).

Depending on what you're doing with the brake pedal, yes, this can be normal.
What happens is that the rear of the car has trailing arms, which means that the wheelbase length changes with the suspension arm position,...

Hi all. Just been pointed in the direction of this forum, been looking for a Citroen forum for ages.
I own a 1995 Xantia VSX 1.9 TD. recently changed the oil and filters, but she has developed poor starting and white smoke (bucket loads of it). I been using the search and i think it must need new glow plugs so thanks thats one problem sorted LOL...

I went to a stainless steel exhaust manufacturer called 'Longlife' in Leeds. Cost me £130 ish on my Xsara HDi whereas for a new cat front pipe would have been about £200. He took it from the front flange to the middle section. When I had it done I noticed that the turbo does seem to spool up earlier. Well worth the money and a good cost saving......

The catalyst on my Xantia has rotted away and I need to find a replacement urgently. GSF don't list the part, and the local exhaust centre want £275 for the front pipe/cat.
Has anyone de-catted a Xantia HDi? Which front pipe did you use? Any cutting / welding needed? Anyone know what size pipe I need to start with if I have a go at making my own?...

how do you know its 4th it is going into,as i cant see how it can do this unless detent balls or springs missing,have you had car driving normaly,if so has any work been done on the car that may have caused this prob regards malcolm

XM with a slight gearbox problem, weird!
Its stuck in 4th gear, I can move the gearstick about but then the box just binds up and you have to rock the car back and forth to release the other gear. The car can be driven around in 4th with out issue, once momentum has been gained (not too good for the clutch though).

is oil around cam cover joint or lower down at head joint,what mileage has car done,usuly if head cracked or gasket gone they dont smoke just presurise water system,smoke could be down to worn out injectors or over fueling on start up regards malcolm

Depends on which dealer you choose to send your order to. I've ordered loads of stuff with no problems but I've heard of some dealers getting a bit funny with joe public who order through PR Net. Maybe it's those dealers who like to add their own mark up and would rather you not know the real price!

Does not really seem to matter, I lightly grease the new one and get the whole bracket and bush in an engineers vice and squeeze, I have to mess about a little to make sure its going in square but once its half of the way in bobs your uncle, to finish I move the edge into the vice jaws to get the last bit in without squeezing the central tube....

I did some radiator work on the ZX when I had one. I just bought various packs of assorted O rings from Halfrauds, and found one that fitted most closely. They only cost pennies and can be found in the odds and sods section - the bit with all the different nuts and bolts, washers etc. The remaining O rings that I didn't use now regularly turn up...

Hiya, I am off to see Stewart tomorrow (oilyspanner ) he is going to fit a new radiator in the Aura, I have ordered the radiator from the Mcr (S) T/park dept of GSF but I can't find the part number for the O ring that goes on one of the pipes?? and they say they cant find any record of one??
They can get me a radiator for the 1990-93 diesel...

Yes - thats it I can't even manage to remove the radio from my BX DTR Turbo Estate (1989 - same as TZD )
To explain it to those not familiar with this particular piece of motoring history this is a typical Citroen flap cover system, with the radio situated down low immediately above the console. The radio/casette is a Phillips of the right age but...

You'll get away with these alright, a couple of blocks of timber to support the car would also be handy. The box is a bit of a weight. Haynes should recommend 'a strong friend' as four hands are better than two for the lift back in !

I'm contemplating replacing my 19TD clutch. Haynes suggests using two jacks. Others who have done clutch changes recommend hoists and slings. Has anyone successfully used the two jacks method?
Right now I have only one trolley jack but also a couple of hydraulic bottle jacks. Would I get away with those?

I've got a number of little jobs to do to it, and my local Cit Specialistic (Euro Car Care, formally known as Citronome in Derby), has quoted me £186 to do the timing belt + auxily belt. Is this reasonable?...as it strikes me as...

I've changed 8 out of the 10 spheres for my Activa - leaving the two rigidity spheres because they have the troublesome pipe to remove. It's a 9mm nut, but accessability is very awkward. Anybody had a go at doing this? The special sphere tool should be a no brainer for people looking to remove lots of spheres.

ALSO , can ne1 help with a wiring diagram so that I can at least fault find with some notion of purpose !! There r too many relays , control boxes (Citroen favourite !! ) etc to know what I'm doing otherwise. Cheers again.

Have a Xantia 1.9 TD with climate control , P reg. Problem is the cooling fans do not operate. Have determined that there is considerable dismantling to obtain access to the rads , fans etc !! So , to avoid unecessary work are there any common faults I can look for ? I have tried a variable pot on the sensor plug (engine end) and I can hear relays...

My xantia wagon's front wheels are leaning inwards. I have recently changed the lower ball joints and link rods, the pessenger's side camber looks to be back to normal, but the driver's side does not improve significantly. I suspect the lower arm bushes may be worn. Is there any way to confirm this? Or there are other things that I have missed?...

With frost I have only ever seen block damage, usually an external crack or a blown core plug. Never seen a head suffer.

What is likely to be damaged when an engine has been exposed to freezing cooling water ?
The engine in question is a '92 BX16TZI (type BDY or BDZ).
I stock a BX16TRS engine (type 171C).
As far as I see it the block would be a direct swap as both types have the same bore & stroke. Of course only if the TZI cylinder head has survived the frost...

I expect the wiring diagram is in haynes - and if you search this site you will find where you can download one. the file seems rather large and if you have dialup the car will probably have rusted away before the download is complete.
Otherwise you can buy a haynes either new or on e-bay.

if yours is a model fitted with a pollen filter you may find that the pollen filter is missing allowing all the debris from outside to get all over the dash you will need to check if the pollen filter is in place it should be sited under the passenger side of the dashboard

you will need to remove the steering wheel i'm afraid , however i've done it on mine without removing it but it's a bit of a bodge as you have to bend parts of the trim up to get at the screws so you run the risk of damaging it , i wasn't too bothered about mine and managed to do the job without any damage.

No they are not supposed to be like that!
1. Bleed the brakes - especially the rears. Do this with the engine running, and the suspension in high. Wedge the pedal down, and then just open the bleed screws in turn.
2. Change the accumulator sphere - the one down the front of the engine. Do a search on here, loads of posts about how to do it.

My 2000 Xantia HDI has a very heavy throttle pedal. I have disconnected it from the potensiometer to ensure that the problem is not the cable itself. The potensiometer seems to have a very heavy spring, has anyone dismantled one of these? Is there any way to adjust the spring?

If my memory serves me corectly your Fiat has a Citroen CX 2.5 engine not an XUD but a conventional OHV engine with with a belt driven cam shaft on the turbo version. I had three CXs with this engine and covered 200k + miles with them.

Hi I just added to my fleet of AX's and ZX's with a 1990 Fiat Ducato campervan (yes I am good at welding). I am told the engine is a 2.5 litre xud lump, which confuses me as I thought the xud was only 1.9 and 1.7. Any way the engine is a turbo diesel with out an intercooler. Does anyone have any data on this engine? Also the engine breather system...
