Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

just noticed a small water leak from either the rad or the intercooler cannot tell which one as both together don't want to take them out as afraid of getting an air lock in the system when refilling i know theres a bleed valve but in the manual theres something about the way you have to fill the system any ideas more than welcome

It seems that when the weather is very hot (around 27 - 30 Celsius) and I'm in traffic, the aircon disconnects as usual but when the signal to start is sent (I hear the relay), the rad fans do come in but the compressor doesn't. Expect 250K out of a looked after engine - its the rest of the car which will go shonky first.

How are your handbrake cables?
My '97 Xantia has a much better handbrake than the 95, the 97 has bigger discs but I think the difference is the condition of the handbrake cables. The '94 Xantia was eating cables at one point because there is a guide for the cable on the suspension strut which wore through them. The later Xantia has a couple of...

Just got my 95 Xantia through the MOT. Actually it breezed through with just one rear bulb that wasn't orange enough! Cheapest MOT for years. But apparently it was a close call with the handbrake, and I don't know what, if anything, I could have done to improve matters.

That Rover will have a Rover 'L' Series diesel engine in it. It was the old 218 td and 418 td that had the 1.7 XUD in them.
20k is a lot of mileage between services, personally I'm changing oil at 5k intervals.

It's not exactly common on the ZX, but then neither is ABS on the ZX (although I've got one!). Almost certianly one of the sensors has gone open circuit. If we knew the pin out of the socket you could check it at the computer, but I don't and I don't think we have discussed the ZX ABS here, but someone might know? You will probably need to go...

I recently got a P reg ZX turboD 1.9 estate (phew). The car is perfect, except that the ABS warning light is always on. I could say its intermittent, but of all the times I have driven it, only once has it not come on. It comes on a few seconds after you start it up, and stays on constantly until you turn off the ignition.
The brakes feel ok...

People complain of having to saw the bolts off, but otherwise its a very easy job apparently. The longest part of the job is jacking the car up and taking the wheel off!
Make sure you have replacement nyloc nuts for them and you'll be fine.

I have a knocking sound coming from the front of my 2001 Xantia HDi. The general consensus is that its the anti roll bar drop links. Does this sound like a correct diagnosis? Is it a straightforward enough job to do. Are there any pitfalls to be wary of? Any advice and help appreciated.

Just sounds like you've got a flat accumulator sphere.
It's 20 quid a new one and 10 minutes DIY fitting.

my abs packed up on my xantia the light was on all the time when you first turned the ig on it flashed then stayed on this tells you that its a wheel sensor i then tested all four sensors using a multi meter i used the 2000 ohms scale and i got a reding of about 670 on three of the sensosors the last one i tested(it always is) did not give a...

Coolant temperature sensor. Crank position sensor. Fuel pump and relay, Ignition coil(s). Bad connection somewhere. Fuse...
Check have you have a spark and have you fuel being injected (wet plugs and fuel smell when trying to start)... One or 'tother or both will be missing.

Had a progressive wobble on the front cured by replacing a driveshaft, worse when turning. and accelerating but lift off the throttle and it disappeared?

sounds like the engine moving in relation to the exhaust pipe, and the sealing ring resisting this, until the stress is too great, and it Jumps to a new position. You might be able to verify this by grabbing hold of the (cold) exhaust pipe about 4' from the engine, and pressing it to one side. If you get the same noise, then that's what it is.

1.9TD facelift , yesterday I took a long sweeping left hand bend at about 50mph and a loud knock came from somewhere underneath, it had a metallic resonant sound a bit like hitting the exhaust pipe with a rubber mallet. The car stayed under control and didn't do it again.
My wife said she has heard it before when she takes a very sharp left hander...

Have a look in your owners manual - both ZX and BX have detailed instructions as to how to open the tailgate from the inside.
ZX has a cover which is secured by plastic thumbscrews and can be easily undone - then just fiddle with the lock mechanism and it pops open. BX has an aperature - put your finger through it and find the lever.

Not owning any cassettes anymore, I looked on ebay and bought a used CD player from a Citroen Saxo which fitted into my Xsara and had all the same steering wheel controls etc. I then sold the radio cassette unit on ebay. Petrols are always cheaper than diesels but this one looks too-good-to-be-true-cheap.
Has it been written off? Is it a ringer? Is it mechanically sound?
Ask lots of questions, if you're still happy after you've asked the questions part with cash, if not walk away it might not be the bargain it appears to be.

If the lumpyness is and smoke is for a few seconds after starting it's either an air leak on the fuel system somewhere or a duff glowplug or two. Have a search on the forum for air leak and glowplugs .

My P reg Xantia TD 88k on clock is tempremental about starting again.Smokes greyish smoke with blue tinge.Lumpy on idle but holds at 1000rpm.The other week it just died on me but I changed the fuel filter and oil and filter and it was OK for a while,but it is now having the same problems again more so when hot in fact.

After towing with my Dads 406 HDI est the last few weeks,i too miss the Xantia`s suspension.The 406 sags a fair old bit,& grounds out when pulling the `van off the rear of our property.No probs at all with the Xantia.It also rides better with the `van on the back,the 406 is ok .

Hi,
A key issue with auto XMs is whether the ATF has been changed regularly.
If not, the most you may be able to get out of the 'box is 100k.
This assumes that it uses the same box, of course, but the principle remains the same I guess.
Cits seem to be either blessed or cursed - some are money-pits, other defy the weakspots and go on and on. Now,...

Forgive me for asking if the tyres have reasonable tread first - I have noticed that sometimes new tyres seem to lighten the steering.
Otherwise it sounds like siesure of something - but the question is what? First step I suppose is a good inspection - looking for rust stains - also creaks and groans.
I'm not quite sure of AX layout - but imagine...

We have an Ax 1.0 Jazz and the steering is getting progressively heavier. The tyers are at correct pressure. Are there any grease points on the car? the tracking is correct, tyres good tread,great car wxcept heavy to steer especially at parking speed.

There should be some form of regulator to control the fuel pressure at operating level ((2 - 3 bar)and the return pipe will collect the surplus fuel fr0om the regulator. Is the regulator item 3?

Seems a bit low. How long has the car been yours? I ask because it has all the symptoms of a low-value thermostat being fitted (perhaps to cure a previous overheating problem)

I can't explain this. I changed my water pump today on the Xantia. It was the original, 170,000 miles old (!). Previously, despite a cooolant change about a month ago and a good flush and blow out of dead insects in the rad and intercooler it always ran at a point just below 80 degrees on the temperature gauge. Which car is it and why do you think that it needs replacing?
It is part of the air-con system and, in my opinion, should not be touched without the correct tools to drain, and collect, the system of refrigerant.

I've just been told the evaporator on my Xantia 2.0 litre petrol turbo needs replacing, as it has a leak which was dectected from an aircon test using dye in the system.
I was originally told by a Citroen Specialist Dave Stott in Middlesbrough (don't trust him as far as I could throw him) that it was the condenser. £200 spent and a new condenser...

I've asked this before....would be interesting to know the answer. I've doused the entire strut top in waxoil for now to preserve them. I wonder if the plate at the top is replaceable as a separate part.

During my cambelt and waterpump change today I took the opportuniny to have a good look at my strut tops. They're rusty and although they're fair at the moment I will be looking to change them before the autumn.
Is it a case of replacing the whole strut? Shame as they are both in good nick otherwise, or are replacement mounting plates available?...

Agreed. I was being talked at while doing the cambelt on a 1360cc 106 Diesel many years ago, and got it a couple of teeth out.
Cranked on the starter, got piston/valve contact, and mashed 2 valves. They mushroomed, and jammed in the guide. Couldn't afford to have new guides fitted, so off with the head, tap the valve through as much as I dare,...

I've changed many XUD cambelts and when I did my Xantia belt today I did as I have always done and locked the cam and pump sprockets but just marked roughly the crankshaft position. I don't bother as it is such a job to get to the crankshaft timing hole under the starter.
I put the new belt on, rotated the engine twice and saw it was a tooth out...

Just changed the cambelt and waterpump on the Xantia today.
I was shocked and surprised to see the water pump was the original after 170,000 miles. It was dated 1993!
It had just and just began to weep, a little crustiness around it. Is this a record?

You mean to say that some idiots are putting you to all this trouble for a car that has virtually no value and probably would be untouched if you left it unlocked with the keys in it (and the existing immobiliser primed?)

Yes they all do - some of the drum braked ones have them incorporated in the rear cylinders. Not as nice a system as the hydraulic cars which feed the rear brakes from the rear suspenion circuit!

Do ZX's have these? I was told by a garage I have just used for the first time that this had failed & that this is what had caused the rear caliper to seize. I've never heard of one being fitted to a ZX before or is that purely because they are usually quite a reliable item?

cant speak for BX's adam but all the CX's I've ever had do that to some extent or another.
Never developed into anything worse. I iimagine its just the extra pull through the alternator and maybe an iffy diode allowing a bit of back flow.

Check that the radiator is not pressurising, if it is, it could be a sign of a blown head gasket. Check that theres enough water in the radiator, and that its bled up properly (search forums for this). Is the sensor for the fan dicky? The temperature gauge should be above 90 before the fan kicks, in, if its below this, suspect a dodgey sensor. Off...

Probably the problem - used to get it on my BX if I wasn't careful as someone had lost the tensioner bolt.
I made a new tensioner which solved that problem. I now have a noisy belt which responds to silicon spray - must chuck it soon!
I don't think alternator bearings are that feeble are they?

I changed the aux. belt on my XM recently, and adjusted it to the advised tension, namely 5mm deflection under firm thumb pressure on the longest run.
It now twitters for around two minutes on start up.
I hate over-tightening things, and fear for the life of my alternator bearings, but I seem to recall that these belts need to run at a...

I've got it...it's ok I guess but still as useless as any typical Haynes manual. It covers the HDi engine(s) ok, but the suspension is only covered briefly.

I did them on my 16V about 4 years ago and had no problems since.
As you live in a warmer climate than the owners in the UK chances are yours has the same problems mine had and it is more a service related problem than a need to replace.

did you bleed the hydraulic system after changing the sphere if not then you may have air trapped in the system do a search on the forum for this as it has been discussed on here before you should be able to find a post that will tell you how to do the bleed procedure

Well, not that dramatic but still, I managed to crank the new engine over 3-4 times tonight. Put a booster box to the pos & neg battery terminals & ran a fly lead to the starter motor, touched the other end to the pos & over she cranked.
No obvious nasty sounds, no grinding of metal, no smoke
WOOHOO!
